Chapter 287 - Extraction machine
Chapter 287: Chapter 287 - Extraction machine
Kai Allen sat in the virtual meeting room, his expression impassive as he listened to the other leaders heatedly discuss the illegal world hopping rampant across dimensions.
His mind, however, was elsewhere, haunted by the memory of Eric’s tear-stained face. He couldn’t shake the guilt that gnawed at him, knowing that Eric was suffering.
"They have destroyed too many worlds, we have to act fast!" one of the leaders declared, breaking through the somber atmosphere that hung over the room.
Another leader let out a weary sigh. "We have noticed an increasing trend. Any world that the black organization infiltrates, they completely destroy the world formation guidelines. Even our best efforts to rectify them have been futile..."
A sense of despair settled over the group as they contemplated the gravity of the situation. It was clear that any world infiltrated by these rogue transmigrators was a lost cause.
The leader cleared his throat loudly, drawing everyone’s attention to Kai. "We have captured the fugitive that we believe to be the head of this operation. Right now, our best agents are in the process of interrogation. Kai?"
Kai’s expression remained stoic as he met the leader’s gaze. Despite the turmoil raging within him, he knew he had a responsibility to uphold. "I will coordinate with the interrogation team and provide any assistance necessary to extract the information we need," he replied firmly, his voice steady despite the turmoil churning in his gut.
the leader made a subtle nod. "Interrogation is not enough," the leader stated with conviction. "It’s better to send the fugitive to us. Extraction is much easier and quicker."
A chill ran down Kai’s spine, freezing his breath in his chest. The mention of extraction sent a wave of unease washing over him. He knew all too well what the extraction machine entailed - it was the newest discovery in their arsenal, a terrifying instrument capable of not only extracting memories from a soul but erasing the soul entirely by the end of the procedure.
The implications of such a device were chilling. It was a fate worse than death, a complete annihilation of one’s existence. And now, they were considering subjecting Eric, the fugitive they had captured, to this horrific fate.
Noticing kais silence the leader gazed at each other and continued, "Agent Kai please sent the figurine over to our team. We will proceed with the followings,"
In that moment, Kai made a decision - a decision born not out of blind obedience, but out of empathy and compassion. He couldn’t bear the thought of condemning Eric to such a fate, of allowing him to be stripped of his memories and identity, erased from existence without a second thought.
With a steely resolve, Kai spoke up, his voice firm and unwavering. "I cannot condone the use of the extraction machine," he declared, his words echoing through the tense silence of the room. "There must be another way to obtain the information we need without resorting to such extreme measures."
The leader’s expression hardened, his gaze piercing as he regarded Kai with a mixture of disappointment and frustration. "This is not a decision to be taken lightly, Kai," he admonished, his tone tinged with a hint of warning. "The safety of the dimensions depends on our ability to extract valuable intelligence from the fugitive."
But Kai remained steadfast in his conviction, refusing to waver in the face of adversity. "I understand the gravity of the situation," he replied, his voice unwavering. "But I cannot in good conscience condone the erasure of a soul, no matter the circumstances."
There was a tense silence as the implications of Kai’s refusal hung heavy in the air.
"So you refuse to comply?" Cold gazes fell on him.
Kai calmly raised his head. "Yes, using that machine is an abrupt approach that I cannot accept, "
The other leaders exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of frustration and disbelief.
"You!.... you have one week. You better make it worth it!,"
Without another word, they stormed out of the virtual meeting, their shadows flickered out leaving behind only a white light projection.
Alone now, Kai felt a heavy weight settle in his chest. He knew that his refusal to comply with the leader’s orders would not go unnoticed or unpunished. But despite the looming consequences, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had made the right choice.
With a sigh, Kai stood up from his chair and made his way out of the meeting room. As he walked through the corridors of the virtual facility, his thoughts lingered on Eric and the decision he had made.
Against his better judgment, Kai found himself drawn to the holding area where Eric was being kept. He knew it was risky, that he could be jeopardizing not only his own safety but Eric’s as well. But he couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling that he needed to see Eric, to ensure that he was safe and to offer whatever comfort he could in such dire circumstances.
Finally reaching the holding area, Kai hesitated for a moment before entering. The room was dimly lit, the air heavy with the scent of disinfectant and fear. Eric sat huddled in a corner, his eyes downcast, his expression one of resignation.
Kai spotted the small glass peices on the floor and the blue liquid that was seeping into the ground.
’He didn’t drink the world energy...’
Taking a breath in he approached him, "defying orders is useless you better comply with our regulations," he took out another vial of world energy from his coat. This was Agent issued ones and they were much more potent. "Drink," he held it in front of his face
Eric blankly gazed at it.
"System, drink the energy,"
Eric let out a snort, "why should I?" His lifeless eyes gazed up at him.
In that moment Kai felt his heart clench. Biting his bottom lips he looked away. "To live " he mumbled
Eric chuckled. "I have no reason to live... why must I," he once again fell silent.
Kai waited and waited but he did not respond so he silently left the cell.
