Chapter 190: Chapter 190 - Call for help
It was afternoon. The blinding sun shone in his eyes.
Eric closed his eyes and laid there for a while until he could muster up some energy in his limbs. ’I should have picked some fruits......’ he thought, touching his sunken stomach.
’it’s okay... adrenalin will last for a few minutes... I think. But then I have to find someone and ask for help.’
He sat up with difficulty. His whole back was covered in mud covering his torn clothes on the back.
As he stumbled around, he fell on something round. Picking up, Eric looked at the dusty, decaying apple.
Without a second thought, he bit into it and ate it all up.
With that bit of energy in his body, he slowly started to crawl.
His legs were fucked up. walking is close to impossible right now. All he could do was crawl around like a babe. Hard rocks dug into his knees cutting them.
Eric tore his shirt. As he removed his torn shirt the two books fell out. He picked them up. Even though he fell into the pond, both the books were not wet. The worn-out books of the two had those ominous black spots flying around and the other had white spots flying around. He had no clue what those were, so he stuffed them at the back of his pants.
The front of his pants was already soiled with crushed fruits. He removed them as well.
Sitting in the corner of the road he tore the shirt into shreds. He tied a part of the shirt to his knees and part of it to his broken leg.
He started to slowly crawl away.
The sun was making him tired much faster. he was starting to feel dizzy.
But Eric did not give up.
He continued crawling until he heard the sound of sloshing water. An old lady’s soft humming was also heard.
’Someone is there..., I can ask for help...’ he crawled over to the side of the road. There was a small hut in the corner. He steadily crawled over to that spot until he spotted the old lady.
She was sitting on a small stool and washing something in a huge vat. Her soft song lulled him to sleep.
Eric opened his mouth to call her out but his body had already lost most of its strength. He just laid on the ground reaching out to her. "h-help.... Help..." he whispered.
The old lady didn’t seem to hear him.
’shit... I think I’m going to end up a salted fish laying out here.’ it was the last thought that came to his mind before he lost consciousness.

to old lady Joo Fei, it was a normal day of chores. She had recently harvested the ripe ground nuts from her small garden and was cleaning up the mud residue. She washed them for a long time until each peanut looked white and clean. "Such a good harvest. I’ll steam him some for tonight." She hummed, picking out the washed nuts.
She placed them on a spread-out cloth to dry in the sun. After doing that, she cleaned the vat with a bit of water and washed it out of her gate.
When all of a sudden, she heard a small groan.
"Huh?" she hobbled over to the gate of her property to see a very wet child laying there on the ground. The water she had poured had completely soaked the child from head to toe.
"Oh my, what have I done? Child, are you okay." She squatted down with a groan and shook his shoulders.
The child groaned once again.
She lifted his head up to notice blood stains on his face.
"He is hurt... what do I do..." she tried to lift him onto her lap but the child was quite heavy. "Omo, He is cold... wait here, kid. I’ll be back." She ran in and brought out a wheelbarrow.
With so much difficulty she carried the kid in and wheeled the child back to her hut.
She dragged him in and onto her bed.
The poor child was not wearing any shirt. The pants he was wearing were torn on the back exposing most of his butt.
"What happened to you, child?" she leaned forward and touched the back of his head. There was some blood there. "Omo, you hurt your head..."
The child also seemed to be wheezing.
"I have to call Haohao." She ran to a small corner and took the old age Nokia phone. She made a call with shaking hands.
"grandma~ how are you? Did you get my gift? Did you like the new phone? I’ll teach you how to use it when I get home tonight yeah?" her grandson cheerfully said though the line.
"Haohao... I found a child... he is bleeding profusely and he can’t breathe properly... I don’t know what to do. The hospital is far, and your grandfather has gone to the nearby town he won’t be back in a while. What to do? Even the neighbors have gone to the nearby town for the temple festival, there is no jeep here...."
"Grandma, I need you to slow down. Where did you find that kid?"
"At our gate. I threw water at his face." She whispered glancing at the child worriedly.
"Why would you do that?"
"It was an accident! Just come here fast..."
"Grandma, listen to me. You need to get him checked. Isn’t uncle Chao nearby? Call him. He can help."
"He deals with animals Haohao" she stomped her foot.
"He can at least do some first aid. Wait I’ll call him,. Make sure he is kept warm and make sure to change his clothes. It’s getting cold at night, right?" her grandson said and cut the call.
Grandma Joo Fei looked at the child, aggrieved. "I’ll get you some help, okay? Don’t worry. My grandson is a cop. He will help you," she whispered whilst covering him up with a old blanket.
She ran to uncle Chao and dragged him over without a word.
"Old ma you can’t just drag me out here. its midafternoon. It’s my nap time ah." the middle age man grumbled.
Grand Joo hit his forehead. "There is a kid dying! You need to get to work."
"Dying? Oh my god, what happened? Did you hit your grandson for not finding a wife yet?"
"Shut up don’t talk bad about my grandson. Come in," she pulled him into the house and showed the kid to him.
Uncle Chao was stunned seeing the state the child was in.
He hurriedly checked his pulse. "His pulse is low. Do you have any clue who he is?"
"I’ve never seen him around here." the grandma anxiously whispered.
Uncle Chao lifted the covers and glanced at the child’s stomach. There was a huge blue bruise running down the sides of his stomach. He gently pressed down there.
the kid winced and around out loud.
"He has a broken rib. A few broken ribs...." he glanced back at the grand ma in shock. "it looks like someone kicked him."
Grandma Joo had tears in her eyes. "he... he even has wounds in the back of his head."
"Shit." Uncle Chao gently lifted his head to spot the blood-soaked pillow. There was a bleeding wound there but thankfully the bleeding as not bad. It was just a skin wound. "he needs a few stitches here... what the fuck happened to this kid."
Grandma Joo hit the back of his head. "don’t swear in front of kids."
"Old ma! You can’t hit my head like that..." he grumbled as he helped clean up the child’s wounds.
Looking down, he noticed the swollen and blue foot. "a broken shin. See the handprint here. someone intentionally broke his leg. This is a serious issue. Did you contact your grandson?"
"Yes, he is on the way home. It’s his holiday...This poor child..." she started to cry softly.
"Old ma, don’t worry, this child can survive." He ran back to his house and brought iv drip meant for cows. He set it up. "Everyone has gone to the nearby town but I think uncle Han and his sons will be back tonight. We’ll take him to the hospital next town, okay?"
"hmmm..." the old lady sat down next to his bed and helped wiped the mud off his back.
The child had so many scars all over his body.
Looking at his pitiful state, she couldn’t hold back her sobs. "Who has the heart to hurt him like this..."
"Eh don’t cry. Then I might have to hook you up with up another one of my iv." Uncle chou coaxed her.
They cut his clothes. He only had a few possessions.
A small vial of golden liquid. A small pink crystal. And two books.
Uncle Chao flipped through the books. There were no words in there. Just a blank book.
He did not know why the child treasured it so much to stuff it in his pants. So, he carefully placed it by the bedside.
They bandaged his wounds and changed his clothes successfully.
It became evening by then.
"Grandma!" Joo Haolei busted though the doors and ran to his grandma. "you, okay?"
His eyes fell on the young child on the bed. His eyes widened slightly.
The moment he saw him his heart started to beat loudly. It hurt so badly that for a second he felt faint.
Tears clouded his vision unknowingly.
Hao wiped them away with a stunned expression.
"Haohao?" his grandma worriedly peered at him.
"I’m... I think I’m good." He walked up to the child and touched his hand. Somehow touching him gave a sense of fulfillment. ’Who is this child? Why do I feel like this...’
