The Rogue Alpha's Second Chance -
Chapter 54: Vulnerable
Chapter 54: Vulnerable
Violet underestimated how weak her health was.
Playing around in the rain resulted in her catching a cold. She was wrapped tightly in the blanket, drinking the bitter medicine under Lydia’s strict supervision.
From the time Lydia noticed how she didn’t wake up, laying on the bed groaning with a red face, she hadn’t given Violet a good look.
Lucas stood beside Lydia, wearing a guilty expression. Both of them got their handful of scolding from Lydia on how they were not children and needed to be more careful.
Violet did not complain after finishing the bitter medicine and stared at Lydia with bright hazel eyes, fishing for compliments.
However, Lydia solemnly spoke out, "You’re going to be a mother in the future yet you can’t even take care of yourself. What are you going to do with your child?"
Violet wore a bright smile on her face, responding, "Isn’t there Lucas and you?"
Lydia sighed. "You’re hopeless."
Then, Lydia’s gaze went towards Lucas. "You are the one who made her like this. Now, take good care of her. I will deal with you if her cold worsens."
Lucas did not even dare argue, nodding.
Violet’s eyes then fell towards her door, and they dimmed. Since such commotion was created from the morning, Sylas must have heard about the condition.
However, the fact that he did not come to visit her stung her.
°°°
Violet’s heartbreaking coughs came from outside the door. Sylas was about to head upstairs when he paused for a second in front of her door. His brows furrowed as if he was contemplating about something.
"If you’re that concerned, go and check up on her, Alpha. The poor girl was looking forward to your arrival since the morning," Lydia spoke out, noticing the expression on Sylas’s face.
Wearing a mask of nonchalance, Sylas coldly responded, "I do not need to entertain that."
Lydia sighed.
"Alpha, how far will you go to deny the attraction between both of you? Violet is attached to you, and even you have started to change. You will only build up regrets if you keep on hesitating," Lydia commented.
"Lydia, it sounds ironic hearing it from you," said Sylas, "you need to deal with your own problems before interfering in my life. And I know what I am doing well."
Sylas’s words had her clench her hand into a tight fist and lower her line of sight. Sylas glanced at her once before heading upstairs.
His steps paused for a second, and he said, "Take good care of her. Don’t let her be noisy."
°°°
Violet woke up sweating. Feeling the heat build up in her body, she pulled the blanket off of her body. Her head felt dizzy as she sat up. Taking a moment to focus her vision, she walked into the washroom to refresh herself.
Then, feeling the thirst in her throat, she walked out of the room and into the kitchen, drinking a glass of water. Hearing the sound of the door opening, she looked towards it, and the next moment she watched Sylas step in.
Those pair of steely blue eyes met hers.
Maybe because her illness made her feel more vulnerable, Violet felt an intense built up of emotions within her. Unable to hold it back, her eyes glistened with tears.
Not wanting to be embarrassed in front of Sylas, Violet pulled her lips into a thin line and turned her back on Sylas, wanting to escape from there hurriedly.
On the way to her room, her panicked mind made her foot trip, and she landed harshly on her knees. Ignoring the sharp pain, she limped into her room and shut the door behind her loudly— as if a prey was escaping from a ferocious predator.
Then, making her way over to the bed, she plopped down and rubbed her aching knees. Although Violet told herself to not hold any expectations, a part of her still waited for Sylas to enter.
However, she was only met with disappointment.
"He didn’t even check up on me," Violet mumbled, feeling deep sorrow erupt within her.
Sylas stood in his place, watching the girl’s back as she disappeared into the room.
°°°
Violet woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. Two days of close monitoring recovered her from her sickness. She reached out for her phone and received the call after seeing how it was from Anna.
"Violet!" Anna exclaimed. "You didn’t call me for two days! Did you forget about me? Do you have a new friend to replace me now? I am so upset at you!"
"There, there, I didn’t forget about you, and certainly there couldn’t be anyone else to replace you," Violet replied, "I was just sick these two days."
Anna grew concerned. "You’re sick? What happened? How are you doing now?"
"Yeah, I am all well now. Just caught a fever. How is it going with you?"
"Ah, I almost forgot. A brand new doctor came from abroad. He checked my condition and said he will perform surgery on me. There’s good chances for me to recover," spoke out Anna nervously.
"Hmm, that’s a good news," Violet responded.
"But I am scared, Violet. What if I don’t get well? Everyone says I will be dying soon, but I don’t want to. I want to live and go to the beach with you," Anna expressed.
"Who said that? I will fight them, alright? We will go to the beach together and do more. I give you my word," Violet said, comforting the child. "I know that you can run around freely as you want in no time."
"Violet, my surgery is in three days. Can you please come over? I want you to be there," Anna requested.
As much as Violet wanted to be by the little girl’s side, she couldn’t go there on her own in her condition. Violet remained hesitant to answer.
"Violet, can’t you do it? You’re the only friend I have. I am really scared," Anna stated.
Violet took in a deep breath. "I will try my best, but I can’t make any promises. Take good care of yourself, alright?"
°°°
Collecting pretty fresh flowers early in the morning, Violet weaved two bracelets out of them and rushed into the house merrily. She found Lucas and Lydia sitting on the couch, carrying on their usual banter.
"Lucas! Lydia! I have got a little gift for you!" Violet called.
When both of their heads turned in her direction, she held the flower bracelets high.
"Aren’t they pretty? I made them for both of you," Violet expressed.
"That’s cute, but isn’t that something for girls?" Lucas commented after some struggle.
"That’s for children," Lydia added.
Violet sat on the glass table in front of them and spoke out, "Do not discriminate. There is no gender or age when it comes to flower bracelets. Extend your hand, Lucas."
"I think I will do fine without it."
But before Lucas could back out, Violet solemnly stared at him and grabbed his hand, pulling it and placing on her leg. Then, as Lucas looked uncomfortable, she tied the bracelet around his hand.
After that, her eyes went towards Lydia, and just as Lydia was about to get up from there to avoid Violet, she grabbed her hand, pulling her.
Under Lydia’s furrowed brows, Violet tied the bracelet on her hand as well.
Violet then clapped her hands together, satisfied.
"Let me click a picture," Violet said.
Lydia and Lucas both gave up, watching Violet carefully position their hands on the glass table before taking a picture. Content with the photo she took, Violet smiled widely.
"Although I did not intend for it, it looks like a couple wearing matching bracelets. How adorable!" she commented.
Lucas’s and Lydia’s eyes immediately met after that, and both of them snatched their hands back hurriedly.
Lydia cleared her throat.
"For you to do this so early in the morning, there’s something you need to ask us, right?" asked Lydia.
Violet blinked her eyes, looking innocent. "Can’t I gift you just because I felt like it?"
Lucas stared at her suspiciously. "There’s no other motive behind it?"
"Well, if you are insisting on doing me a favor, can you pretty please with a cherry on top take me to the human hospital day after tomorrow?" Violet pleaded— her round hazel eyes staring at them in desperation.
Lucas frowned. "What’s the matter? Are you feeling unwell?"
"No, that’s not it. You know, my friend, Anna, she is having her surgery that day and wants me by her side. I also let her know I would be there. So, can I go?" Violet said.
"Well, that hospital might be dangerous for you to visit. They might be still on look out for you there," Lydia pointed out, "it’s not as though you will be of any help by being by her side."
"I will just go there for a little while, and I can be on full disguise, so that they don’t recognize me. Is it really not possible?" Violet pouted.
