The Rogue Alpha's Second Chance -
Chapter 53: Distracted
Chapter 53: Distracted
As Lydia pulled back the chair and sat opposite to Lucas, she noticed the man was in daze. His fork played around with the food on the plate with no intention of consuming it.
Her gaze then shifted towards Violet. She has her head lowered, wholeheartedly concentrating on the food. The silence between both of them was suspicious when they were responsible for being the loudest.
"What got you so disturbed? Did you get scolded by the Alpha so early in the morning?" asked Lydia.
Lucas’s eyes fell towards Lydia. His lips parted. After a second of hesitation, he expressed the reason behind his shocked state: "Alpha and Princess are having an affair."
Violet choked on her food upon hearing that and immediately clarified in a panic.
"It’s nothing like that. What do you mean an affair? Alpha was just being playful. That’s all. Lucas misunderstood."
Lucas scoffed at Violet as if he was being played as a fool.
He folded his hand over his chest and stated, "Playful? Are you kidding me? What part of Alpha do you find playful? He was hugging you tightly— that too in his wolf form— and wouldn’t let go of you.
There must be something going on between you two. How did I not notice? Am I an idiot? He didn’t even let me touch you. That should be his possessiveness. I know what that looks like."
Violet was stumped for words, and her cheeks heated up.
Even she had no clue as to why the wolf treated her so affectionately when the human counterpart wanted to avoid her.
Lydia’s curious eyes weighed down heavily on Violet, and she wanted to escape.
"Uh, from when do you have something going on between you two? Although it’s abrupt, you have my support," Lydia stated.
"No, wait, Lydia, aren’t you being way too calm about it? This is Alpha we are talking about. Not to mention that Alpha is whole eight years older than Princess, I didn’t even see the build up of chemistry between them."
"Well, you’re a fool to not notice the signs. Obviously, Alpha treats Violet special."
Lucas thought back about Lydia’s words and expressed, "It seems so now that I think about it. Could Alpha have really fallen in love with Violet?"
Hearing how absurd the direction of their conversation was being, Violet stood up and slammed her hands on the table.
"You guys are misunderstanding big time! There’s nothing between Alpha and me!" Violet exclaimed.
That’s when the door to the house opened, and Sylas stepped in. Noticing his presence, color drained out of her face, and her eyes remained on him, waiting for him to say anything in acknowledgement.
But he ignored them three, walking towards his room.
Violet’s heart squeezed instantly, and feeling like a wilted flower, she settled down on the chair— her head lowered.
"Alpha must have heard the conversation, right?" Lucas asked in a whispering tone.
"Most likely," Lydia responded.
"But then he didn’t react. What could it mean?" Lucas contemplated.
Violet felt too upset to mind them and concentrated on her food.
°°°
Violet was sensitive to Sylas’s emotions. Believing it would be too shameless of her to stick to Sylas when he avoided her, Violet stopped watching him practice in the morning.
She stayed in her room, playing around with her room, or helped Lucas around the house, tagging along behind him. When Lydia was at home, she accompanied her as well.
Both of them started to notice there was something wrong with Violet. A few days earlier, she felt comfortable in the presence of Sylas and acted like his little follower, trying to please him.
And now, Violet casually pretended as though Sylas did not exist.
Today, after pleading for a long time, Lucas was willing to teach her how to make explosives. However, since it was too dangerous for her to get close to the chemicals during her pregnancy, he had her sit far away and not deal with anything personally.
Because she had been bored for a long time, this was exciting to her. Taking out her little notebook, Violet wrote down everything Lucas had to say.
Both of them were outside the house. The sky was cloudy, showing signs of rain, and the humidity in the air rose. This was a pleasant atmosphere.
Once Lucas was done creating his, Violet eagerly asked him: "Can I do one as well?"
The man who usually went along with her remained stern and stated, "No, Lydia already warned me to keep you away from these chemicals. She will kill both of us if she knows I let you touch these."
Violet pouted.
Then, from the corner of her eyes, she noticed the Alpha. Her figure straightened up, feeling the nervousness brew within her. Previously, she would be reprimanded by him anytime she mentioned wanting to touch the explosives.
But now, as he walked past her, her heart dropped to the bottom of her stomach, and she felt disheartened.
In order to prevent Lucas from seeing her emotions, Violet furrowed her brows and spoke out, "Lucas, come on, this is boring. At least take me out for a trip."
Lucas wiped his hands and walked over to her. Patting on her head, he messed up her hair and stated, "There’s no use in whining to me, Princess. I am not going to melt at your words. Also, Alpha will get really mad if I let you out anywhere."
Violet rolled her eyes and lowered her gaze. "Alpha would probably be happy if I was gone. He then wouldn’t be burdened with this sense of responsibility."
Lucas frowned.
"What’s the matter with you two? Didn’t you stick to Alpha so closely before? Why are you maintaining a distance now? Did you get into a fight with Alpha?" Lucas inquired, concerned.
Violet let out a deep sigh. "Do you think I can fight with Alpha?"
"You don’t seem like it, Princess, but you have a lot of temper. Whatever is going on between Alpha and you, it’s nothing that can’t be solved.
It has been a long time since I have seen Alpha worried about someone so much, so cut him some slack. Alpha can be mean sometimes, I know, but deep down, he is having a hard time too."
Violet doubted Sylas was ever worried about her. All he knew was to treat her hot and cold. Therefore, it was better for her to avoid him. In that manner, he wouldn’t be forced to be gentle to her.
"I am not mad at him. I just think he doesn’t have to deal with me if he doesn’t want to. Alpha enjoys his peace, being left alone, and I shouldn’t disturb that. Already I am a nuisance in his eyes to begin with," Violet expressed solemnly.
"We all know Alpha is a big meanie. Why don’t we leave him alone? Do you want to learn how to hunt? We should have a bow and arrow around here. Come on, I will show you," Lucas offered.
Violet’s hazel eyes gleamed. "There’s a bow and arrow? You know how to use it?"
"One of the many hobbies I picked up. Are you impressed."
Violet nodded her head. "I want to learn as well!"
°°°
Sylas’s room was shrouded in darkness and silence. In his hand was a glass of red wine, swirling with slight movements of his hand. His hand was pressed on his forehead, and his head leaned back. Sylas’s eyes were closed.
After couple of seconds, his eyelids slowly opened, revealing a pair of gloomy and bored steely blue eyes. Placing down the glass of wine, he stood up and walked towards rmthe large window.
He pulled away the curtain to allow the light to enter. The gradually darkening sky felt comfortable to his soul, unlike the bright, shining sun.
His gaze then lowered.
There was Violet standing in the middle of the ground. Lucas stood behind her, guiding and holding her while teaching her how to use the bow.
Creases formed between both of Violet’s brows as she concentrated ahead. Pulling her lips into a thin line, Violet mustered all her strength before shooting the arrow.
However, the trajectory of the arrow was tragic as it fell towards the ground in a downward curve.
Lucas burst out into laughter. As this made Violet upset, Lucas tried to coax her later before proceeding to show her how to use the bow next.
As they carried on their session, a light drizzle began to fall. Sylas’s eyes were calm— just as still ocean in the night time with no waves.
Yet, the droplets of rain tapping on the glass window quietly stirred up something in his chest.
Violet’s face beamed with a smile when she collected the water on the palm of her hand and splashed it towards Lucas. Then, she grew alert when Lucas wiped off the water from his face and chased after her.
Sylas pulled the curtain, letting the darkness encapsulate the room once again.
On the other hand, Violet raised her head, looking towards Sylas’s window. Her brows were furrowed.
Lucas instantly caught her. "What are you so distracted by?"
The next instant she got splashed by water.
"Lucas!"
