Chapter 360: Chapter 360 Explanation (2)_1
Xiao Muli’s character was something Situ Xin knew well, so she was certain that he was unaware of the matter. After some thought, she said, "Okay, you handle that so-called arranged marriage yourself. Once you’ve settled it, I’ll consider whether or not I want you as my boyfriend, how about that? Until you’ve dealt with it, I’ll pretend I never heard your confession." This was an extra chance Situ Xin was giving to Xiao Muli.
Upon hearing Situ Xin’s words, Xiao Muli felt as if a weight had been lifted from his heart. He had feared that Situ Xin would completely kick him out of the race because of this issue, leaving him no time even to cry about it.
"Alright, I understand. I’ll take care of it," Xiao Muli said confidently.
However, Xiao Muli could never have expected that things would change so quickly.
That very day, after parting with Situ Xin, he received a call from his assistant reporting some issues at the Xiao Family Ancestral House that needed his attention. After the call, Xiao Muli planned to deal with the matter first and then have a serious talk with his mother.
Since it was particularly late by the time he finished handling the situation, and considering there was a woman engaged to him by an arranged marriage at home, he felt uncomfortable. As a result, he spent the night at his apartment outside.
The next morning, Xiao Muli finally returned to the courtyard.
"Oh, isn’t that Muli? I didn’t expect you to have a fiancée already," an elderly lady said with a smile upon seeing Xiao Muli.
"Yeah, Muli, I didn’t know you’ve had a fiancée since you were a child. Your fiancée is not bad-looking, but she can’t compare to Xiao Xin," another grandma in the courtyard said before turning to the first and adding, "Ah, I thought Xiao Xin might end up with Muli. I didn’t dare to introduce my grandson to Xiao Xin. Now that this is settled, I’ll have to ask my grandson to come back and spend more time with Xiao Xin."
The more Xiao Muli listened, the uglier his expression became. He didn’t understand how, after just one night away, the entire courtyard was abuzz with talk of his having a fiancée. Moreover, hearing others covet Situ Xin made him feel as uncomfortable as if his treasured possession was being eyed by others.
"Ladies, I do not have a fiancée," Xiao Muli said with a dark expression as he clarified to the two Old Madams.
"How can you not? Your mother is over there, chatting with the lady, alongside a few of the courtyard’s Old Madams."
"Oh, that’s right, Old Madam Situ and Old Madam Loo are there too," one elder added, while another followed up. However, their words only darkened Xiao Muli’s expression further, as he began to exude a palpable chill.
After bidding farewell to the two Old Madams, Xiao Muli hurried in the direction they had indicated.
Speaking of Liu Yun, Xiao Muli’s mother, she was usually quite sensible. This time, however, it seemed as if she were possessed. She was dead set on having Xiao Muli marry Fu Xiaoyi.
Liu Yun had her own reasons. Coming from a humble background, she was also aware that her father-in-law did not like her. She feared that her son’s future wife might look down on her as a mother-in-law, or that they might climb above her with the favor of her father-in-law.
Thus, she wanted to find a girl of lower status for her son. And Fu Xiaoyi fit the bill perfectly.
After thinking about it all night, the next morning after breakfast, Liu Yun took Fu Xiaoyi along while delivering local specialties to several families in the courtyard. When everyone pointed at Fu Xiaoyi and asked who the girl was,
She would smile and tell them that she was her son’s fiancée.
Now, when Liu Yun took Fu Xiaoyi to the Situ family, she did the same with Old Madam Situ and Old Madam Loo. Upon hearing this, the two Old Madams exchanged glances but did not speak.
However, whether Liu Yun’s mind was really all tangled up or what, she actually said to Old Madam Situ and Old Madam Loo, "Oh dear Aunts, I’m so sorry. My father-in-law actually had the idea of having your Xiao Xin marry my Muli. But I’m so sorry, my Muli has a fiancée already. So..."
With those words, the faces of Old Madam Situ and Old Madam Loo soured immediately. What was Liu Yun up to? Was she there to boast, or to imply that their beloved was not good enough for her Xiao Muli?
The two Old Madams were instantly displeased. Just as Old Madam Situ was about to speak, Xiao Muli rushed over anxiously. "Mom, what are you talking about? Since when do I have a fiancée?"
The moment Liu Yun saw her son, her heart skipped a beat, sensing that something was very wrong. But she continued, "Aunties, you see, he’s even shy about it." Turning to Xiao Muli, she said, "Muli, having a fiancée is nothing to be ashamed of. Besides..."
Before Liu Yun could finish, Xiao Muli cut her off sharply. "What fiancée? That’s something you’ve concocted on your own. When did you ever get my consent?" Xiao Muli’s expression was fiercely cold.
Just as they were speaking, several old masters who had finished their exercises began ambling over.
"Muli, what’s going on here?" Old Master Xiao, seeing his grandson, asked. Upon closer inspection and noticing his son’s wife with Fu Xiaoyi, his expression darkened further. He addressed Liu Yun sternly, "What are you doing, and why have you brought her out here?"
"Dad, I..." Liu Yun felt a chill at the sight of Old Master Xiao.
Old Madam Situ and Old Madam Loo, meanwhile, were quite displeased with Liu Yun, particularly after her recent remark. "Old Xiao, when did we ever want to marry our Baby off to the Xiao Family?"
"Indeed, what does our Baby have to do with Xiao Muli’s fiancée? Why bring someone over just to show off to us?" Old Madam Loo said indignantly.
