Chapter 359: Chapter 359 Explanation (1)_1
Old Master Xiao never even considered that Situ Xin would marry someone from outside their family compound.
The furious Old Master Xiao had no concern for saving other people’s face. In a fit of anger, he said to Xiao Muli’s father and mother, "I’ll tell you, the marriage of Muli is none of your business. Get rid of any betrothal you’ve arranged as soon as possible. Furthermore, our Xiao Family isn’t just open to anyone. I’m telling you now, I only acknowledge that girl from the Situ Family as our Xiao Family’s granddaughter-in-law."
If it hadn’t been for the incident today, Old Master Xiao would not have cared about the differences in social status, and Xiao Guobing’s wife today would not have been Liu Yun. The Liu Family was merely a minor clan of third-rate status in the Capital City. Although Old Master Xiao wasn’t particularly fond of Liu Yun as a daughter-in-law, he had still stepped in to prevent any issues. However, Old Master Xiao’s words today were partly spoken in anger, partly a firm declaration of his stance, and thirdly, a reflection of his true disdain for the girl, Fu Xiaoyi.
When Old Master Xiao spoke these words, Fu Xiaoyi’s complexion grew incredibly unsightly, although she knew her family’s strength and background could not compare to the Xiao Family’s. She had always been coddled and cherished by her parents back home, where nobody dared to provoke her. Moreover, Xiao Muli’s mother, Liu Yun, had always been quite fond of her, displaying no concern over the status difference with the Xiao Family.
Fu Xiaoyi was already upset by the unfamiliar look in Xiao Muli’s eyes. Hearing what Old Master Xiao said made her go pale instantly. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she dared not let them fall.
"Dad, what you said is a bit too much," Xiao Guobing and Liu Yun paid attention to Fu Xiaoyi upon hearing Old Master Xiao. When they saw her pale face, both showed worried expressions, and Xiao Guobing even addressed Old Master Xiao.
The moment Xiao Guobing spoke, it struck a nerve with Old Master Xiao, who was already not feeling well. He shot up from the sofa like a puffed-up cat, pointing at Xiao Guobing’s face and said, "What is this attitude? You haven’t been home for so long, and this is how you talk to your father once you get back? And it’s all for someone else’s daughter. Xiao Guobing, have you lost your mind? I’ve never seen you so concerned about your own son, but here you are, caring so much for someone else’s daughter. Fine, since you and your wife are so concerned about this girl, both of you get out of my Xiao Family’s gate and never come back. I’ll consider that I never had a son like you."
Old Master Xiao already had many grievances against his son, which erupted in one go this time.
"Dad, that’s not what Guobing meant. He..." Liu Yun, seeing her husband anger his father-in-law, hurriedly stood up to speak for her husband. But before she could finish, Old Master Xiao cut her off.
"Enough, I understand his intentions. He’s grown up and hasn’t listened to me for a long time. I no longer hold any hope for him. Whatever he wants to do, I won’t interfere or care. But Muli is different; he’s my grandson. Since before, both of you did not have time for him, you should not meddle in his affairs from now on." Old Master Xiao paused before adding, "If you truly want what’s best for Muli, then settle this betrothal matter quickly. If the Situ Family and the Loo Family elders find out, your son might remain a bachelor for his whole life." Having said that, Old Master Xiao turned and went upstairs.
Without looking back, Old Master Xiao went upstairs, leaving Xiao Guobing to sink heavily onto the sofa. He knew his father was profoundly disappointed in him, hence had placed all his hopes on his son, Xiao Muli. Yet, even so, his father had never spoken to him so harshly before. Knowing was one thing, but hearing his father speak those words today was indeed hard for him to bear.
After Old Master Xiao left for upstairs, Liu Yun quickly comforted the silently weeping Fu Xiaoyi. "Xiaoyi, don’t cry," she said, feeling a deep sense of guilt for failing to uphold a promise to her good friend.
While Old Master Xiao was present, she dared not speak up. But now that he had left, Liu Yun let loose her frustrations to Xiao Guobing: "Guobing, what was father talking about? Muli is our son; how can we not have a say in his marriage? What’s wrong with this betrothal? Xiaoyi is so excellent; how is she unworthy of Muli?"
Xiao Guobing, already in a bad mood, became irritated at his wife’s rebuke: "What are you nagging about? Didn’t you see that dad was upset today? Xiaoyi is good, but that’s your opinion. If Muli doesn’t like her, there’s nothing to be done. You can’t force it on him. And as a daughter-in-law, how can you speak of dad like that behind his back?" Saying this, Xiao Guobing stood up and went upstairs to his room.
Leaving Liu Yun with an ugly expression and Fu Xiaoyi, still weeping incessantly.
"Xiaoyi, don’t be sad; Auntie will help you. You and Muli haven’t seen each other for such a long time; he might not even remember you. Take this time to get to know Muli better. I think, with Xiaoyi being so outstanding, Muli will surely grow to like you." Liu Yun had not given up the idea of having her son end up with Fu Xiaoyi.
"Auntie, will Muli really grow to like me?" Fu Xiaoyi stopped crying and lifted her head to ask after hearing Liu Yun’s words.
"Yes, he definitely will."
Xiao Muli chased after Situ Xin all the way from his house and finally caught up with her just before she entered her home.
"Xiao Xin, listen to me, I really didn’t know anything about this betrothal," Xiao Muli said, urgently explaining as he grabbed Situ Xin who was heading home.
"You didn’t know before, but now you do," Situ Xin said seriously, looking at Xiao Muli.
"Yes, now I do know. But it’s not what I wanted. Xiao Xin, don’t worry. I’ll take care of this matter," Xiao Muli said earnestly, his eyes filled with urgency, eagerly waiting for Situ Xin’s response.
