Chapter 264: The Fall Of The Raven Court (3)
A wave of terror stormed Logi’s body. For a minute, he went still, unable to take his eyes off the wound.
Then, like a kickstart to his nerves, he listened for a heartbeat, but it was faint and by the passing second it was decreasing.
"No, no, no," Logi panicked, searching for a potion the Witch had given him in case of an emergency, but he couldn’t find it. A chilling realization grasped him—he lost it during that blast.
That was his only chance.
"Logi?" Cai said weakly with half-open eyes.
"I’m here," Logi sniffled, holding his hand tightly. "So don’t say your last prayers, alright?"
"But I feel so cold, isn’t that how it feels when Daudi’s reaching for your soul?"
Logi’s lips trembled, Cai’s hand was losing its warmth, and his face turned pale by the second.
"Maybe, but he won’t take it if you fight it."
Cai gave him a half smile. "I’m not as strong as Lord Raven to escape death."
"No, you’re not, but you’re the strongest kid I know; you didn’t let your disability stop you from tinkering like I did."
"Only because I had the best master."
Logi chuckled softly, but there was a sad undertone to it.
Cai slowly reached for his pocket and brought out a small piece of wood with a rune carved in it. "I got better at carving little symbols. I made this for Isa."
"Then you give it to her yourself. I’ll make sure you do, you just have to stay with me, alright?"
"I can’t," he said as his eyes slid from the corner of his eyes.
Logi shook his head slowly, as a sob wrecked from him. "I’ll not let Daudi take you too, you hear me?" His eyes searched for anyone, but there was no one.
Smoke shrouded everything, making it difficult to see. If only he could find a skin weaver nearby.
"Logi, please listen before it’s too late."
Logi shook his head stubbornly. "No."
Cai held his hand tightly. "Please?"
"Okay, just as long as you keep talking," Logi said, still desperate to find anyone.
Cai gulped hard and forced the words out. "Commander Rav and Ekko were investigating... along with Vanya. It started a few moons ago." His chest heaved as the pain got unbearable. "Commander Nyssa was—"
"Nyssa, what?"
"Nyssa was acting strange and—" He coughed. "I don’t know anything but today, before the attack, the ruling council was called for her after evidence was found about something involving Stingers."
Logi’s blood ran cold. "What?"
Cai grasped Logi’s hand tightly. "The second explosion happened in the ruling council. I was outside and I got trapped."
"Dear gods," Logi said with trembling eyes, that area was reduced to nothing but rubble, and the entire place was completely buried and flooded. There was a channel leading to a lake. No one could have survived that.
"I saw someone else," Cai coughed a mouthful of blood.
"That’s enough. You need your strength."
"Logi," Cai cried. "I don’t want to die, please don’t let Daudi take me, please, please, please."
Logi hugged him tightly. His eyes squeezed shut as the despair broke him.
Cai cried too in his arms, even though he begged for mercy, there was nothing Logi could do.
Suddenly, debris hit the platform they were on, and the entire thing collapsed.
When Logi grabbed his bearings, pushing off the debris that almost buried him alive, he realized Cai was no longer by his side.
"Cai!" he called, crawling, desperate to find him. "Say something, I’ll find you. Cai—" He paused when he heard a clank of metal. When he raised his gaze, he found three Riddari.
The moment they discerned Logi’s presence, the attack was in full swing.
Logi roared, conjuring the debris around him and sending it toward them in terrifying force. Vines broke from beneath the earth and swayed rapidly with a deadly precision.
However, the Riddari were steadfast and dodged every single attack sent their way. Cutting through the vines like you would do paper, and dashing toward Logi, who was relentless in destroying all.
Logi gasped when right at the corner of his eyes, he found one of them crawling against the wall like a spider.
Logi grunted in pain, waving his burned hand as a giant vine smashed into the wall, but the Riddari veered to the right and landed on his feet, running down the structure.
With a leap, the Riddari ascended into the air and descended with his sword aimed at slicing Logi into two.
Just when it was a few paces away from Logi’s head, a dagger spun with accuracy and pierced into the Riddari’s head.
The rest of the two Riddari turned and found Isadora glaring at them with a lethal look, on the verge of using her one dagger to cut them down.
One of the Riddari stretched his hand forward as weaves were conjured and a wind burst right through Isadora, cuts marking her skin as the force propelled her body backward, but before she could hit the jagged wall behind, a sea of shadow broke her fall and enveloped her in protection.
Another wave came and sliced into the Riddari’s armor, restricting their movements. One broke free, but his head was cut off before he could think of anything else.
Kraven swung his blade, the blood smearing the area as he pinned his glowing silver eyes on the other. The Riddari attacked but was cut in two before he could take the first step.
"Logi!" Isadora rushed to his side, helping him to his feet. "Are you alright?" she asked in worry, observing the burns.
It was a sight that broke her heart and showed how much he had been trying to hold on. They agreed to split so they could cover more ground to navigate the chaos for survivors. Now she regretted leaving him to go off on his own.
"Cai," Logi said, eyes skimming around.
"Cai," Isadora said as horror filled.
Just as she had been searching for Rav and Vanya, she was searching for Cai too, but so far they kept getting delayed because of the Riddari on every corner.
"Cai!" Isadora called, searching for him too.
"Over here!" Kraven yelled, grasping their attention.
They hurried to where Kraven stood, his dark weaves pulled the debris away, and pulled out a body.
"No," Logi said, grabbing him and dropping to his knees to check him. "He’s still breathing, Isadora. Do you still have the potion?"
"I do, but I’m almost out. We used most of them on the survivors we found," Isadora explained, pulling some strands of hair covering his face to get a better look at him. "He’s getting cold." Fear bled into her as an image of Marek’s body came forth.
’No, not on my watch!’
Without wasting any more time, Isadora brought out the remaining potion, lifting Cai’s chin gently and allowing the purple liquid to slip in.
"It should be working by now," Logi said. He had seen the potion at work and knew its effects were quick. "Isadora?"
Isadora sobbed, caressing Cai’s cheek, but there was no response.
The sound of her silent cries made Logi’s face drain of color as reality settled in.
Kraven stared at the scene with an unreadable expression, his cold gaze on Cai’s unmoving body.
Isadora sniffled, flinging the bottle somewhere, and stretched out her hand. "Please," she begged quietly. Since the mating ritual, her weaves had been silent.
Yet Isadora quietly begged herself, the gods, but nothing came.
Cai’s body was colder by the second, and panic filled her. It was happening again, she was just going to sit by and watch a life fade away, knowing the power was within her, and yet she couldn’t reach it, she could feel it deep down, and yet to grasp the entire thing felt like searching for a needle in a haystack.
A painful cry tore from Isadora’s throat, and the rest of her scream was muted, her ears losing all sounds as under her gaze, Cai took his last breath.
Logi sat on the ground, silent, still, eyes pinned on Cai’s body.
Isadora broke into tears but suddenly paused when her eyes caught a narrow glowing thread connected to Cai’s chest.
Isadora followed it to a black-cloaked presence standing at the corner, skeleton hands holding a wooden spindle as it rolled out the thread. It wasn’t just Cai’s, but several were being spun into it from various locations.
Completely taken over by this overwhelming sight, she rose to her feet.
The dark, cloaked figure sensed this. And turned his attention to her.
"What are you doing?" Isadora demanded, glaring at the thread. "Let him go."
"You dare question Daudi’s Hand?"
Without hesitation, she grabbed the thread.
"No!"
"What’s happening?" Logi said with wide eyes.
Kraven crouched beside Isadora, who remained still in a position, her hands stretched out as gold weaves twirled delicately around her. Her body glowed as well as her eyes, like the sun.
And then a blinding light consumed everything.
