Chapter 148 He Lost Her (First Update)
Chapter 148: 148 He Lost Her (First Update)
Yelu Yan looked up at Li Xianyun and smiled, "It’s okay, no need to be shy."
Just at that moment, another burst of cheers came from inside.
Li Xianyun couldn’t help but look inside, putting her shyness aside.
It turned out to be a group of street performers who could do very difficult stunts.
Among them was a woman whose body was extremely flexible, able to fold herself to fit into a very narrow wooden barrel.
Onlookers were so amazed that their mouths hung open, and as soon as the woman successfully emerged, they couldn’t help but applaud loudly.
Besides that, they could make monkeys push carts, dogs bow, and even goats walk across a single-plank bridge.
Especially the monkey being teased, dressed in human clothes, looked so laughably human, it was no wonder it attracted so many spectators.
Although Li Xianyun was typically serene in nature, she also loved lively scenes.
When she saw something amusing, she couldn’t help but laugh out loud, and pointing inside, she lowered her head to Yelu Yan and said, "Husband, look, it’s so much fun."
Yelu Yan, being tall, could see the scene inside clearly, but he didn’t look at it; his gaze stayed fixed on Li Xianyun all along.
Like a man bewitched.
Yelu Yan looked up at Li Xianyun’s bright and splendid smiling face, his mouth visibly curving upward.
After watching for a while, Li Xianyun looked down at Yelu Yan and said, "Husband, are you tired? Put me down, please."
"Not tired."
She was as light as a chick, how could he possibly be tired?
Li Xianyun watched a little longer, then looked down at Yelu Yan and said, "Husband, I don’t want to watch anymore, let me down, please."
"Don’t want to watch anymore?"
"Mhm."
Only then did Yelu Yan steadily put Li Xianyun down.
Li Xianyun looked at his broad, sturdy shoulders and smiled, "Tired or not?"
Yelu Yan raised his arm and exaggeratedly moved his shoulder around, saying, "Tired."
Li Xianyun let out a soft "ah" of concern and said apologetically, "Then let me massage it for you."
As she was about to do so, Yelu Yan took her tender, soft hand in his and said, "You’re light like a little chick, how could that tire me out?"
Li Xianyun pursed her lips and smiled, her gaze inadvertently falling on her small hand held in his, her smile slowly solidifying.
Yelu Yan also looked at it and gently let go, touching the tip of his nose and saying, "Let’s go."
"Okay."
The August Festival was almost upon them, and the street was filled with vendors selling festival pastries and decorations.
Li Xianyun saw a stall surrounded by a crowd, with many lovely masks hanging upon it.
Forgetting herself, she took Yelu Yan’s rough hand and walked toward the stall, saying, "Husband, let’s go take a look over there."
"Alright."
Yelu Yan said this as his eyes fell on her small hand, his lips curving sharply upward.
Upon reaching the stall, Li Xianyun let go of Yelu Yan’s hand without hesitation and carefully examined the masks on display.
The vendor was an old man.
Seeing a potential customer, the old man laughed and said, "Miss, would you like to buy a mask to wear?"
Li Xianyun looked at him in surprise and said, "Old sir, how do you know I’m not a man?"
The white-haired old man laughed, "I have never seen any man as handsome as you."
Li Xianyun pursed her lips and smiled, no wonder there were so many people around this old man’s stall; he really knew how to talk.
Yelu Yan stood in front of Li Xianyun and smiled, "If you like it, buy it."
Li Xianyun hummed in agreement, picked up two fox masks, one big and one small, and asked the old man, "Old sir, how much for these two masks?"
"Ten copper coins."
Jinwu stepped forward to pay the money.
The old man did not take the money but looked at Li Xianyun and said, "Miss, you have the look of great wealth and fortune, surely you and your husband are harmonious, and your offspring will be numerous."
Yelu Yan, upon hearing the words, felt a surge of joy in his heart and said to Jinwu, "Reward."
Jinwu immediately took out a bar of gold from his bosom and placed it on the old man’s table.
The old man was so surprised and delighted that he couldn’t utter a word, his mouth opening and closing in shock.
Li Xianyun didn’t say anything at the moment, but after they had walked some distance, she looked up at Yelu Yan and said, "Husband, you were just tricked. He says that to every young couple."
"I know," Yelu Yan replied.
Li Xianyun paused, then asked, "Then why did you give him so much gold?"
"I like what he said."
Li Xianyun pursed her lips and smiled, saying, "Husband, you’ll have to change this fondness for flattery, you might get deceived by others."
Yelu Yan, with a smile concealing his thoughts, looked at her and said, "I rather hope you would deceive me more often."
His eyes held too much for her to see, so Li Xianyun chose to ignore it and instead focused on the mask in her hands.
Yelu Yan took the larger mask from her hands and, looking down at her with a smile, asked, "Did you buy this for me?"
"Mhm," said Li Xianyun, "I just thought it looked nice. If you don’t want to wear it, you can..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Yelu Yan had already put on the mask and asked with a smile, "How does it look?"
Li Xianyun looked at him in surprise; Yelu Yan just didn’t seem like the kind of person who would wear such a thing.
"It looks nice," Li Xianyun said with a smile.
Yelu Yan chuckled and said, "Men don’t like being told they look nice."
"Then what should I say?" Li Xianyun replied as she put on her mask, tilted her little head towards Yelu Yan, and laughed, "Do I look like a little fox?"
"Yes, like a cute little fox."
Yelu Yan reached out wanting to pat her adorable little head.
But Li Xianyun had spotted something appealing and turned to walk towards it.
Yelu Yan didn’t manage to touch her little head, but his fingers brushed through her black hair.
Her glossy black hair glided through the gaps between his fingers.
Yet this was enough to bring a smile to Yelu Yan’s lips.
Yelu Yan took steps to follow her, but suddenly, the crowd increased and, in the blink of an eye, they were separated.
With the crowd so thick and pushing, he could not see a fragment of Li Xianyun’s shadow.
A feeling of unprecedented fear welled up in Yelu Yan’s heart.
"Xianxian..."
He hastily removed his mask and began to push through the crowd, frantically searching for Li Xianyun.
Jinwu and others who were following at a distance also noticed something amiss and hurried over, saying, "My lord."
Yelu Yan spoke in a cold voice tinged with rush, panic, and fear, "The princess consort is missing, go find her quickly!"
He had forgotten to conceal his identity.
Jinwu saw his Khan in such a state of unveiled emotion for the first time; without a second thought, he hastened to search with Bater and the others.
With the crowd so immense and the area so vast, Yelu Yan looked everywhere but had no idea where to start.
He had lost her...
Right under his watch, he had lost her...
Just as he was about to gather the Hidden Guard to search, a pleasant voice rose from behind him.
"Husband."
Yelu Yan whirled around and immediately saw Li Xianyun standing amidst the throng, holding a candied haw on a stick in each hand.
She was smiling at him, her dimples blooming like flowers.
Li Xianyun said with a smile, "I thought they didn’t have candied haws in Khitan, to my surprise..."
Her voice abruptly stopped.
