Chapter 147: 147 Didn’t expect you to be so likable (second update)
Li Xianyun stood up and looked up at Yelu Yan to ask, "Khan, are you not busy today?"
"Not busy, let’s go."
"Hmm."
Li Xianyun intended to wait for Yelu Yan to go first, but he stood still.
Yelu Yan slightly lifted his bluish chin towards her, indicating for her to go ahead.
Li Xianyun had no choice but to start walking towards the outside.
Yelu Yan watched her with a smile and followed along.
The two walked almost shoulder to shoulder, very close to each other, with their clothes brushing against one another.
When they reached the door, everyone bowed and saluted.
In a calm voice, Yelu Yan said, "Besides the lady’s maids, Jinwu and Bater will follow closely; everyone else should stay far behind."
"Yes."
Having so many guards following would attract a lot of onlookers. Afraid that Li Xianyun wouldn’t enjoy herself, Yelu Yan allowed only Zhuo Ma and three others to accompany them.
Downstairs, payment was already being taken care of by someone.
Yelu Yan and Li Xianyun headed towards the exit of the tavern.
Just as they were about to reach the entrance, two young women mustered the courage to approach and blocked their way.
Yelu Yan instinctively protected Li Xianyun behind him.
Jinwu and about seven or eight guards stepped forward.
The sight intimidated the two women.
Li Xianyun noticed that one of the women was holding a large pomegranate; apparently, they had come to offer fruit.
In ancient times, carts were laden with fruits and melons by women when Pan An walked the streets—could it be that in Khitan it’s also popular to give fruit as a gift?
Li Xianyun said to Yelu Yan, "They are not bad people."
At Li Xianyun’s gesture, Yelu Yan looked at her, and then Jinwu and other guards immediately backed off.
The women sighed in relief.
Li Xianyun asked, "What brings you two ladies here?"
Looking at Li Xianyun with a flushed face, the girl holding the pomegranate said, "Young master, do you like pomegranates?"
The other woman also looked at Li Xianyun with anticipation.
They had mistaken her for a man.
Deceiving these young ladies would not be right.
Seeing the girl with the pomegranate trembling slightly with a hand that trembled, clearly having summoned a great deal of courage to come forward, Li Xianyun took the pomegranate from her and said, "Thank you, both my husband and I quite enjoy pomegranates."
"Husband?" the girl who handed over the pomegranate asked incredulously.
Li Xianyun glanced at Yelu Yan and with a smile, said, "He is my husband."
The other woman asked, "You are a woman?"
Li Xianyun responded with a smile, "I’m sorry for the misunderstanding."
"You don’t have to apologize, actually, we just thought you were very pretty and wanted to take the opportunity of offering a pomegranate to get a closer look at you," said the pomegranate girl.
"And what do you think? Was it a surprise to see me up close?" Li Xianyun asked, laughing.
The pomegranate girl hadn’t expected Li Xianyun to be so approachable and to joke around, and couldn’t help but laugh, "Not at all, you are even more beautiful up close."
The other girl joined in, saying with a laugh, "We speak the truth; you really are very pretty, and your husband is indeed a fortunate man."
Yelu Yan said with a smile, "You are right, I am indeed a fortunate man."
Li Xianyun had not expected Yelu Yan to join in the conversation and looked up at him in surprise.
Yelu Yan looked at her with a smile, filled with an indescribable affection.
This left the two girls stunned: both of them were favored by the heavens.
They both were extremely good-looking, a pair of outstanding figures among men, one tall and majestic, the other delicate and exquisite—it was truly a perfect match.
Li Xianyun shifted her gaze and said to the two girls, "Thank you for your pomegranates, I really like them."
With these words, she bid the girls farewell.
After leaving the tavern, Li Xianyun walked obediently down the spacious yet crowded streets, holding a pomegranate.
She noticed someone looking at her, and he was smiling very happily.
Li Xianyun didn’t want to pay attention initially, but that smile was somewhat glaring.
She couldn’t help but look at Yelu Yan and smile, "What are you laughing at?"
Yelu Yan opened his attractive thin lips and said, "I didn’t expect you to be so likable."
Li Xianyun chuckled softly, "Not bad, I guess."
Playful yet adorable.
The West Market at night was extremely lively, with not just a myriad of shops, but also wandering vendors selling all kinds of merchandise, such as jewelry, pastries, crafts, and so on.
The streets were full of people coming and going.
When they reached crowded spots, Yelu Yan, fearing that Li Xianyun would be bumped into, raised his arm to protect her, maintaining the courtesy of a gentleman without touching her shoulders or arms.
Once they reached less crowded areas, Yelu Yan lowered his arm.
The process repeated itself.
The two of them walked and looked around, very relaxed and comfortable.
In a spacious clearing, surrounded by layers of spectators, cheers spilled from the crowd now and then.
Li Xianyun walked up to the front and couldn’t help but stand on tiptoe to look inside.
Yelu Yan saw her adorable actions and smiled, "Want to see?"
Li Xianyun hummed in agreement and kept standing on tiptoe, stretching her neck to see inside, but she could only make out the dark heads of the people; she couldn’t see anything else clearly.
Seeing that many children were riding on the necks of adults to look inside, Yelu Yan looked at Li Xianyun and said, "You can sit on my shoulders."
Li Xianyun waved her hands and said, "No, thanks."
But the excitement inside was so intense, and the cheering sounds made her itch with curiosity.
She looked at Yelu Yan.
In the lantern light, her eyes were big and bright, as if they contained stars and oceans.
Yelu Yan, with a smile in his voice, asked, "Will you sit or not?"
Li Xianyun looked around and voiced her concern.
"It’s always children sitting on adults’ shoulders, when do you see adults sitting on someone else’s shoulders?"
"What does it matter, we don’t know each other here. And I am not someone else," Yelu Yan explained.
Li Xianyun hesitated for a moment, then finally said, "Then I will sit on your shoulders and have a look before coming down."
"Mhm."
Yelu Yan crouched down, one sturdy arm encircling Li Xianyun’s knees, while the other large and rough hand patted his own shoulder, signaling her to sit on his firm shoulders.
Li Xianyun did as instructed, but didn’t know where to place her hands.
Yelu Yan chuckled softly, raised his hand, and took her smooth small hand, placing it on his neck.
Li Xianyun’s hand touched his chilly skin and the large hard Adam’s apple on his neck.
Her hand recoiled as if burnt.
Yelu Yan looked up at her and laughed, "What does it matter if you touch? I am your husband."
Li Xianyun didn’t listen to him and placed her hand on his shoulder, clutching his clothes tightly.
Yelu Yan looked at her nervous demeanor and laughed, "Don’t be afraid, I won’t let you fall."
"Mhm."
His words were always right; Li Xianyun trusted him very much.
Yelu Yan held on to her legs and slowly stood up.
Li Xianyun, somewhat nervous, couldn’t care less, and her hands hugged his head, her warm palms resting against his chiseled, handsome cheeks.
Yelu Yan was surrounded by a faint fragrance from her, and her warm palms made his breathing somewhat irregular.
He involuntarily swallowed.
Yelu Yan was tall and burly, standing out from the crowd like a crane among chickens.
Now with Li Xianyun sitting on his shoulder, she was very conspicuous, attracting the attention of many onlookers.
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, Li Xianyun said, "My Lord, perhaps I should come down."
