The Mistress Is Reborn As The Fiancée -
Chapter 33: Pillow Fight
Chapter 33: Pillow Fight
The morning sun, a gentle intruder, peeked through the silken curtains of Areum’s private wing, casting a soft glow across the room. A peaceful silence reigned, broken only by the soft rhythm of sleeping breaths. Areum, nestled beneath the plush covers, slept soundly, her face relaxed, her expression serene. Flynn, lying beside her on the ground, stirred slightly, his eyes fluttering open at the disturbance in the air.
He blinked, his gaze sweeping across the room, his senses alert. He caught a flicker of sound outside the door, a subtle shift in the sounds of the birds chirping. His eyes widened, his heart skipping a beat. The sound of a walking stick against the marble floor got him instantly alert.
Flynn’s instincts kicked in, his mind racing. He had to act quickly, to create a plausible explanation for their shared bed. He could not afford to let Grandmother Jia suspect the true nature of their arrangement.
With a swift, fluid motion, he jumped onto the bed with all the bedclothes, landing beside Areum with a soft thud. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, his movements deliberately exaggerated.
Areum, startled awake, reacted instinctively. She kicked out, her foot connecting with Flynn’s backside with a satisfying thwack. "What are you doing?" she hissed, her voice laced with a sleepy annoyance.
The force of the kick sent Flynn tumbling off the bed, landing on the plush carpet with a muffled groan. He rubbed his backside, his eyes fixed on Grandmother Jia, who now stood in the doorway, her eyebrows raised, her expression a mixture of amusement and suspicion.
"Good morning, Grandmother," Flynn said, his voice laced with a forced cheerfulness. "We were just... having a little pillow fight."
Areum, her eyes wide with confusion, sat up in bed, her gaze shifting between Flynn and Grandmother Jia. "Pillow fight?" she echoed, her voice laced with sleepiness. "Yes, that is what we were doing, pillow fighting."
Grandmother Jia grunted, a low, amused sound. "Pillow fight, eh?" she said, her voice laced with a playful skepticism. "At your age? You two are truly love birds."
Areum’s cheeks flushed crimson, her eyes flashing with a mixture of embarrassment and annoyance. "Grandmother," she stammered, her voice barely audible, "what are you doing here? You know you are not supposed to exert yourself and come all the way up here."
"Nonsense," Grandmother Jia said, her voice laced with a newfound energy. "I feel like I am twenty years younger! That tea Flynn brought me last night was truly miraculous."
She stepped into the room, her movements surprisingly sprightly. "I came to tell you two lovebirds to get ready," she said, her eyes twinkling. "Breakfast is waiting. The whole family is eager to see you both."
She paused, her gaze shifting between Flynn and Areum, her expression thoughtful. "And," she added, her voice laced with a gentle warning, "try to be a little less... enthusiastic... this morning. The walls in this wing are quite thin, you know."
She chuckled, a low, amused sound, and turned to leave the room. "Don’t keep us waiting," she said, her voice laced with a playful command.
Flynn, still rubbing his backside, offered a sheepish smile. "Yes, Grandmother," he said, his voice laced with a polite obedience.
She eyed them knowingly for a moment before smiling and leaving the room.
When she was sure that she had gone far enough to not hear them, Areum, her face still flushed, glared at Flynn, her eyes flashing with anger. "This is all your fault," she hissed, her voice barely audible. "You and your ridiculous pillow fight."
Flynn chuckled, a low, amused sound. "My apologies," he said, his voice laced with a playful charm. "I was merely trying to... improvise."
"Wait," he said, narrowing his eyes. "You should actually be thanking me for my quick thinking. Your grandmother would have caught us."
When Areum refused to answer him, he moved on. "Now," he said, his voice laced with a professional detachment, "we should get ready. We would not want to keep the family waiting."
Areum sighed, her anger momentarily forgotten. She knew that they had to maintain their facade, to convince the family that their marriage was genuine. She also knew that she could not afford to give Grandmother Jia any reason to suspect their arrangement.
She sat up in bed, her movements deliberate, her expression composed. "Very well," she said, her voice laced with a quiet resolve. "Let us get this over with."
"Ladies first." Flynn gestured towards the bathroom.
Areum narrowed her eyes suspiciously at him. "Why?" She asked and he blinked at her, momentarily confused.
"Because I’m a gentleman." He answered.
I would prefer if you went in before me." Areum stated firmly.
Flynn stood up and stretched languidly, his shirt rising so that his midriff was in Areum’s eyeline. She quickly turned away as a blush rose to her cheeks.
"Or here’s a thought," Flynn said when he reached the bathroom door, "we should conserve water by sharing the shower."
Areum threw a pillow at him, and he ducked just in time for it to miss him. Areum heard his laughter and fumed, wondering how long it would take before they could find a way to separate without raising any eyebrows.
When Flynn came out of the bathroom, Areum quickly went in, doing her best to ignore his glistening body. While Flynn watched her knowingly.
When she came back out, she breathed a sigh of relief that Flynn was not there and she dressed in silence, her movements efficient, while she wondered what breakfast was about that made her grandmother come all the way up to her wing to inform her.
When she finished and went to the inner room, Flynn was waiting for her and together they descended the grand staircase together, their footsteps echoing softly in the quiet hallway. They entered the dining room, their smiles fixed, their eyes watchful. They were ready to play their roles, to convince the family that they were a happy, loving couple.
