Chapter 56: Rex Worries For Regan

As Dan was taking Evelyn’s pulse, Regan held Evelyn and looked at him with a frown on his forehead. He didn’t understand why Dan was taking so long.

Finally unable to bear the delay Dan was taking, Regan asked

"What is it? Is she alright?"

Dan stroked his beard as he put Evelyn’s hand back on the bed and nodded his head but he had a deep frown on his forehead that matched Regan’s frown.

Seeing him like this, Regan felt nervous while Rex was watching his brother in silence but with amazement.

"Lady is fine but the body is very weak. Since there had been a huge blood loss, it would be better to nourish the body. I will prescribe some tonics for nourishment. "

Regan nodded his head immediately and glanced at Elias.

"Elias, bring paper and ink."

Elias obeyed immediately. When he brought the paper and brush, Dan scribbled on the paper and then gave it to Elias.

Regan looked at Elias and said

"Have Martha prepare them under her eyes. Also, let her know that some light dishes would be cooked for the dinner. Evelyn didn’t eat anything since last night."

Even you didn’t eat anything.

Rex had wanted to say but in the end, he sighed and kept his mouth shut. Perhaps when Evelyn ate then he would be able to make his brother eat something.

Hence, Rex asked Elias to hurry.

Outside, Hannah, Miri, and Ami were still wondering if they could go inside or not. It was only when Elias came out that they came to know that Evelyn had finally woken up and everything was alright.

The three girls were relieved and happy to know this.

Even without Elias having any need to tell them, they ran to the kitchen saying they would cook some light food for Evelyn as she must be hungry.

Inside the chambers, Dan stood up again and asked Rex.

"Your Highness, since Lady is awake. Can I take my leave now?"

Rex had just opened his mouth when Regan spoke up before him.

"No!"

Dan turned to look at Regan and heard him say

"What if she needed you again?"

Regan frowned as if he was experiencing the same helplessness he did when there was no doctor to treat Evelyn.

He looked at Dan and suddenly offered.

"Would you like to stay inside the castle as a permanent doctor?"

He realized this time that not having a physician inside the castle was a big mistake. Evelyn might have not reached this state if they had Dan inside the castle since the start.

On the other hand, Dan looked thoughtful as he stroked his beard and considered the offer made by the prince.

A huge part of him actually wanted to accept the offer. Dan was old and he couldn’t travel to far places to treat people.

In the city, though he treated people, he couldn’t bear to charge them a high amount as the condition of people was not bad in the past. It was only after the prince came to Mazic that the life of ordinary people slowly started to get right.

However, he didn’t have a family as well. In case, he gets in a bad health, there was no one to take care of him in his lonely house.

After thinking all this, Dan smiled and accepted the offer.

Regan was satisfied and when Elias returned, he asked him to make arrangements for Dan’s stay.

Elias and Dan had left. Now, there were only Rex and Regan inside the chambers.

Rex looked at his brother who only had his eyes on Evelyn.

In normal circumstances, he would have been happy for Regan but after he had come to know that Evelyn was from Zamorin, his heart just wouldn’t settle well when he would see Regan looking at Evelyn.

He stepped forward and placed his hand on his brother’s shoulder.

Regan raised his head to look at him and for a moment, Rex went blank when he saw a smile on his lips.

It was a small tilt of lips but it was a smile that expressed that Regan’s happy.

Rex suddenly felt his eyes going blurry and he blinked furiously. How long had it been since he saw Regan’s smile?

"She woke up, Rex."

"Hmmm"

Rex could only hum as he saw Regan picking Evelyn’s hand and kissing its back.

"I had thought that she would leave me just like Mother."

Rex felt his throat clogging with emotions when he heard Regan finally talking about their mother.

After that incident, he never heard Regan mention ’Mother’. But today, Regan could even smile as he talked about their mother.

Rex was happy, very happy but he was scared as well.

"Regan, don’t depend on her so much."

He finally let out what was inside his heart. However, Regan frowned when he heard his brother’s words.

Seeing this, Rex continued in a slightly serious voice.

"She is from Zamorin."

Within a moment, Regan understood everything. His smile disappeared and his eyes went cold as he looked at Rex and said

"I don’t care."

Rex sighed when he saw him like this and couldn’t help but say

"What if she is here to harm you? All of this...even her saving you could be a pretense, Regan!"

"I don’t care."

Regan said indifferently.

Rex felt frustrated when he saw him like this.

That was the problem.

When Regan didn’t care, he didn’t care at all. But when he did care about someone, then he would never let that person go. He would never let that person face any problem. He would stand by that person even if the whole world was standing against him for that.

And to Regan, Evelyn was now that person.

But Rex also knew that partially it was his fault. Was it not him only who had brought Evelyn inside Royal Palace when Regan had left her just like that?

Rex regretted. But now, he couldn’t do anything.

In the end, he could only rake his hand through his hair in frustration and leave from there.

He could only investigate Evelyn and ensure that she was not any sort of danger to his brother.
