Chapter 285: Evelyn Increase Her Knowledge

She exhaled sharply as she looked at Rex wondering if he was trying to make fun of her. However, after observing him for a moment, she didn’t think that was the truth.

There was a long silence between them before she turned to look at Rex again and said

"I hope Your Highness would refuse to marry me."

The smile on Rex’s lips disappeared when he heard that.

"Why is that if I may ask Lady Alexandria?"

Alexandria stared at him a moment longer when she heard him calling her name. For some strange reason, she liked the way he called her.

Alexandria looked away a moment later. She needed a calm mind to answer the question. As much as she wanted to be honest, she knew that he was a prince so she couldn’t hurt his ego by rejecting him outrightly. So she said politely

"Your Highness, I don’t want to marry a man who would have any other woman except me. I can’t be like a virtuous woman that Your Highness needs so it is better for both of us not to go ahead with this proposal."

Alexandria knew very well that as a prince who was soon going to become King Rex would marry queens and concubines.

She couldn’t be the only woman he would take into his Palace.

On the other hand, Rex smiled on hearing Alexandria’s words.

He actually liked what she said.

He had never understood the need of marrying more than one woman. If one’s wife allowed it then he wondered if she really loved her husband because it was impossible to accept another woman by her husband’s side when a wife loved her husband.

Evelyn proved him right by what she did in the last two days.

From Alexandria’s words, he felt that marriage meant to her more than a pretense in front of others where the wife pretended to be virtuous and the husband acted as the head of the family.

"What if I promise to have only you for my whole life?"

Rex asked suddenly and Alexandria looked as if she couldn’t believe him at all.

But Rex looked too sincere as he continued

"I have never wanted more than one woman in my life. One who would be loyal to me and understand my responsibilities is enough for me...and Lady Alexandria also seems to be enough to handle."

When she heard the last few words, Alexandria looked at Rex with narrowed eyes.

Rex chuckled when he saw that.

He held her hand suddenly surprising her and placed a kiss on the back of it gently as he said

"Think about my proposal, Lady Alexandria. I might have left a bad impression on you in our first meeting but I can assure you that I am a gentleman."

Rex smiled playfully when he said his last sentence and Alexandria blushed hearing him.

She knew very well that she was also at fault when they collided.

"I apologize. I should not have behaved like that."

She said meekly.

"It’s alright. I don’t mind it."

"Alexandria"

Both of them heard the voice and turned around to find the Minister of Revenue walking towards them.

Minister of Revenue bowed to Rex politely and said

"We should leave now, Your Highness. I hope my daughter was not a bother."

"Not at all."

Rex smiled and answered.

He watched as Alexandria left with her father.

He already felt slightly empty without her presence.

It made Rex feel amazed at how a person could make such a special place inside his heart in a few moments only.

He liked Alexandria and he wished that she would say yes.

Evelyn sat eagerly on the chair around the round table and opened the first book to read.

She had bought five books because she was not certain if one would be enough. Her prince was special so cajoling him would also need special ways, right?

Therefore, she bought five books together.

However, as soon as she opened the book, she closed it at the same speed.

Her face was completely red as well as her ears.

Isla who was standing a few steps away frowned when she saw her like this and asked in concern.

"My Lady, are you alright? Why is your face so flushed?"

Evelyn cleared her throat before she answered

"Alright....I am alright."

Isla didn’t look convinced but asked

"How are the books? Did My Lady find anything or should I go and buy more such books for My Lady?"

"No!"

Evelyn said immediately and quite loudly.

Isla was shocked for a moment and looked at Evelyn strangely.

Evelyn swallowed and composed herself.

"My Lady, are the books not good?"

Isla asked seeing Evelyn’s strange behavior.

’They are completely indecent.’

She had wanted to say.

Remembering the picture she saw in the book a few moments ago, Evelyn could feel the warmth on her face.

"Yes."

She said in the end and Isla immediately came forward and asked

"Then should I take all of them away?"

"Yes"

Evelyn said firmly.

How could she read such indecent books!

Isla immediately gathered the books and was about to take them away when Evelyn suddenly stopped her.

"Stop! Just bring them back. I have spent money so I will just..."

"My Lady doesn’t need to. I will go and return them to the shopkeeper. How dare he give such books to My Lady which are not likable at all!"

Isla said somberly but Evelyn shook her head immediately.

Only now she understood the meaning behind the shopkeeper’s smile.

But she never meant it that way.

However, Evelyn also remembered a slave saying that man liked it. A man who loved a woman wanted to have her in every way if it was possible.

She also didn’t find anything wrong with going ahead in her relationship with Regan. She felt secure enough with him to take this step.

But she knew very little about these things.

Perhaps these books could help her.

Thinking this, Evelyn asked Isla to bring the books back to the table.

Then she even sent Isla outside the room, closed the door, and opened one of them after gathering her courage.

That day until evening, Evelyn increased her knowledge of pleasing Regan.
