Chapter 279: Regan’s Outburst
"My Lady!"
Evelyn came out of her thoughts when she heard the familiar voice.
Looking away from Peri, she looked at Isla whose eyes were filled with concern. Isla had been worried when she didn’t find Evelyn anywhere in her room and came looking for her here.
Evelyn turned to look at Peri coldly but her words were for Isla.
"Isla, give her ten gold coins and then send her out of the Palace."
Peri was shocked to hear these words from Evelyn’s mouth.
"Evelyn, how can you...we are friends."
But Evelyn didn’t hear anything.
Isla could see that her lady was unhappy. She was sure that it must be Peri’s fault. She didn’t like Peri from the start so she followed Evelyn’s order eagerly.
Hence, Peri was sent out of the Palace with ten gold coins.
Isla actually felt that her lady was generous. With these ten gold coins, Peri should not have any difficulty starting her life again.
However, Evelyn only felt her eyes filling up with fresh tears.
She had treasured only one person in her life until now and that was Regan. But why was everyone hell-bent on taking him away from her?

That night, when Regan entered the room he was surprised not to find Evelyn there. He had to go to Royal Palace with Rex to talk to Derrick. But he came back as soon as the matter was solved and wanted to accompany Evelyn for dinner.
He had thought that Evelyn would be having rest inside the room as he had said but it didn’t seem to be so.
Regan came out of the room and looked for Evelyn but he couldn’t find her anywhere. In the end, he asked a maid about Evelyn’s whereabouts.
"Her Highness is in the guest room."
Guest room? What was she doing there?
Regan walked to the guest room with confusion-filled eyes. She might be just seeing if it was alright for any guest if suddenly someone comes to stay.
Regan’s frown vanished when he thought this but when he reached the guest room he was proved wrong.
He saw Isla standing outside the guest room with a helpless and worried expression on her face.
"Your Highness..."
Isla called out as soon as she saw him and approached him.
"Your Highness should talk to My Lady. I don’t know what is wrong with her."
Regan immediately went inside the room thinking that Evelyn was still feeling unwell. She might not be agreeing to see the physician. He felt angry when he thought this but he only saw Evelyn seated on the bed with a blank face.
"Evelyn!"
Evelyn looked towards him when she heard his voice but there was something in her eyes that made Regan frown.
Her eyes were red.
"Did you cry?"
He asked as concern filled his heart.
But she avoided his eyes. Her actions made Regan confused.
"What are you doing here?"
He asked suddenly. He had a feeling that something was wrong with her. Approaching her, he held her hand and pulled her in his arms but she suddenly pushed him away making Regan halt completely.
"Evelyn..."
He whispered again but Evelyn never raised her head to look at him.
It was a few moments later that Regan heard her say
"Your Highness...we married each other because of Arthur, right?"
Regan frowned but nodded his head and said
"Yes"
They did marry because he wanted to stop Arthur from taking away Evelyn. That was the only choice back then.
"Arthur is dead ...so we can part ways now."
Regan thought that he heard wrong. He looked at Evelyn with shock-filled eyes who never raised her head to look at him.
"What did you say?"
He finally whispered in a somewhat shocked voice.
Evelyn was silent for a moment before she spoke again
"Your Highness, I think that we should divorce each other now."
Regan looked completely blank. Then he suddenly held her arm as he dragged her closer to him. His actions made her gasp in shock but Regan didn’t care this time and said coldly
"Look at me when you say this."
Evelyn swallowed the lump inside her throat before she raised her head and repeated her words.
"Your Highness, I want a divorce."
Regan left her hand swiftly.
His eyes were cold and detached.
"What happened this time?"
He asked finally but Evelyn never answered his question.
"I am asking you something."
When Evelyn still didn’t answer him, Regan chuckled this time mirthlessly.
He stepped back from her and Evelyn raised her head to look at him. Her eyes were filled with tears when she saw his cold and indifferent face.
"You know Evelyn...I don’t care what happened this time because I don’t want to know at all...you just seem to give up on me every time. Last time also...as soon as Arthur appeared you were ready to leave me. Am I not worth it for you to fight for me against whatever is stopping you from accepting your feelings for me?"
Evelyn’s lips quivered as she heard everything but she couldn’t say anything.
She could only watch as Regan turned around and left the room and as soon as he did, she broke down in tears.
It hurt to give up.
He asked if he was not worth fighting for.
He was. Evelyn wanted to tell him.
She could trade her life to be with him. However, no one would want her life in exchange for that. They wouldn’t allow her to be with him even in exchange for her life.
And she could never bear to see another woman with him.
She wanted to be selfish and keep him for herself only but their fates didn’t allow it.
So it would be better if she leaves him so that he can do what his mother wanted.
Evelyn knew how much Regan loved his mother and she didn’t want to be a reason for him to give up on his mother’s dreams.
If only she had never been a slave...everything would have been so much better. However, she could only dream that.
