Chapter 277: Meeting Alexandria

Evelyn raised her head and looked at the beautiful girl standing in front of her.

The girl smiled at her politely. Evelyn nodded her head though quite hesitantly.

After seeing Laurel, she didn’t have any good thoughts about noble ladies. She felt as if all of them will only look down on her because of her past.

However, the girl in front of her smiled widely on seeing Evelyn’s nod and stepped closer to her. Evelyn could feel the sincerity in her smile...something that stopped her from saying no.

She saw that the girl even signed a servant to come closer and then she picked a pastry from the plate he had in his hands.

As Evelyn watched her eat the pastry eagerly, she couldn’t help but feel amused.

The girl noticed her gaze and stopped eating suddenly. She smiled but a little awkwardly this time and said

"Heheh...Forgive me Your Highness for being so rude. I was feeling hungry so..."

"It’s alright."

Evelyn said softly.

She actually liked the lady in front of her because she seemed too real. More real than any other noble she had ever met until now.

The girl looked relieved to hear Evelyn and smiled more sincerely next time.

A moment later, she suddenly slapped her forehead and said

"Look at me. I didn’t even introduce myself. Believe me, Your Highness. I am not like this always but today...my empty stomach is just making me cause such blunders."

It’s alright."

Evelyn said again very softly.

The girl looked at Evelyn dreamily for a moment before she cleared her throat and said

"I am Alexandria, Your Highness. My father is the recently hired Revenue minister in His Majesty’s court."

Evelyn nodded her head with raised eyebrows.

Regan did tell her that many new ministers had been hired.

Alexandria finished her pastry quite soon while Evelyn still had hers in her hands. Evelyn watched as she signed the servant to come again and picked another pastry.

Noticing Evelyn’s eyes, Alexandria asked Evelyn if she wanted but Evelyn shook her head immediately.

After the servant left, Alexandria started having her pastry but she suddenly stopped when her eyes fell on someone.

Evelyn sensed her stiffness and followed her gaze.

She only saw a middle-aged man glaring at Alexandria.

Evelyn assumed the worst and turned to look at Alexandria who looked scared. She held Alexandria’s hand who came out of her trance and looked at Evelyn

"Is everything alright? Is that man...."

Evelyn left her words unsaid but the cold expression on her face said everything.

Alexandria’s eyes widened when she understood what Evelyn was trying to imply. She shook her head immediately as she said

"No, No Your Highness. He is my father."

Evelyn relaxed when she heard this.

"Actually...he had arranged for me to meet a man today in this banquet but I left that man all alone. I had thought that he would not find out but it seems that he did."

Alexandria looked upset as she said these words but she never stopped eating the pastry. Instead, she ate it more furiously than before.

Evelyn was amused to see Alexandria’s actions. From this, she knew that the matter was not that serious.

However, Alexandria was still talking.

"I don’t understand why my father is in such a hurry to marry me. I am just nineteen. Also...he arranges such bas..."

Alexandria stopped amidst her words realizing that she was standing in front of a princess consort and bit her lips.

Evelyn pressed her lips in a thin line to stop herself from laughing.

She found Alexandria very amusing.

"I mean ...the men he arranges me don’t find me suitable for them. They want a meek, gentle, and virtuous wife who won’t mind regardless of how many concubines they take place. They are ready to accept me as their main wife but they want me to take care of their mansion, and their concubines in return. Isn’t that a great deal?"

Alexandria said sarcastically.

This time, Evelyn couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the girl.

She could understand what Alexandria was saying. She was actually surprised that Alexandria said her thoughts honestly because many ladies usually pretend to be virtuous by showing that they could accept such a thing.

Seeing the upset expression on her face, Evelyn couldn’t help but try to divert her attention

"What kind of man do you like?"

She asked her unconsciously.

Alexandria looked deep in thought as she said

"I have never thought about this but ... I would like it to if he can respect me and my thoughts. I don’t want him to have any other wife except me. I want him to give me enough freedom to explore my own interest and have my own opinions."

Evelyn nodded her head in understanding.

"Unfortunately, such men are hard to find. The men I have met except my father are self-conceited and don’t know how to apologize when they make mistakes..."

Alexandria sighed in disappointment and then suddenly she had an angry expression on her face as she said

"Just like right now...a man collided with me. I am sure that he did that intentionally seeing that I was so beautiful."

Evelyn pressed her lips again finding Alexandria cute when she called herself beautiful proudly. It was strange that she didn’t find her statement arrogant because what Alexandria said was the truth.

She was indeed very beautiful.

"Ah...I should leave I guess. My father will burn me under his glares if I didn’t go and coaxed him right now."

Evelyn nodded her head in understanding and smiled as she saw Alexandria walking toward her father.

A few moments later, she felt the need to use the restroom. After asking a servant the direction for the restroom, she exited the banquet hall and walked towards the Imperial Palace.

Around fifteen minutes later when she was returning to the banquet hall, she suddenly heard two ministers having a talk with each other and couldn’t help but stop hearing their words.
