The Masked prince -
Chapter 238: Reaching Mazic
Chapter 238: Reaching Mazic
The second night, they stopped again for rest.
Evelyn was silently staring at the sky looking at the moon which was surrounded by stars. How she wished that she had Regan by her side right now!
The guilt of leaving Ezra behind to lose his life for her was eating her alive!
She wondered if she was being selfish. If only the three knights were not serving her, then Ezra would not have gone through this.
It made her wonder if the people around her ...those who got close to her were destined to suffer.
First Oliver, now Ezra. Even her prince was not faring well.
She really wanted Regan’s arm around herself right now because Evelyn could feel herself falling with every passing moment.
"Don’t blame yourself."
Derrick’s cold voice fell in her ears but she didn’t look at him.
Evelyn didn’t know what she should say to Derrick. She pondered on Derrick’s words and knew that he was right.
Even her prince had told her the same.
’If you are in trouble, you are supposed to save your life first and your knights are supposed to save you as well. You can’t worry about anything else at such moments, Evelyn. For them as well as for you, you yourself is supposed to be first priority.’
Those had been Regan’s words when he had given Isla, Ezra, and Elliot to her.
But how could she make her heart understand the same! To her, life was not so worthless that Ezra should sacrifice it for her sake.
Evelyn closer her eyes as a tear rolled down her eyes. She whispered a thousand apologies to Ezra all night. But she couldn’t fall asleep and she wondered if she would be able to after that.
Carrying the burden of two lives on her shoulder, how would she be able to continue living?
The next morning, they started again after having some breakfast.
By the night of the third day, the food had ceased so Derrick found the coins from Evelyn’s bag and went to buy something.
When he returned, there were wounds on his face which made Evelyn who had been all silent finally look at him seriously.
"There were some goons on the way. They tried to snatch the money from me ...but don’t worry, I taught them a good lesson."
Derrick’s shone with a cold glint of light when he said this and all of a sudden he realized how big of a mistake he had done by leaving Evelyn all alone here.
He had even sent her to shop all alone more than a day ago when she came back with a set of his clothes.
What if she had faced goons on her way or here when she was alone?
He had been too careless. But again, Derrick had never considered such things in his life before. He never had to.
At the same time, he was relieved that Evelyn was fine.
They had their dinner. Derrick saw that Evelyn again ate very less. It looked as if she was forcing herself to eat so that she could have enough energy to walk to Mazic.
Somewhere Evelyn was reminded of Regina because of this one incident.
Derrick remembered when Regina’s knight died, she didn’t have her meals on time and ate less day by day. He was a very old knight who had been serving Regina for many years but he was also the most loyal to her.
He knew that Regina’s heart hurt more because she couldn’t see him for one last time. After all, as a queen, she couldn’t bring her knight to Alfaros.
Those days had been hard for Regina. He had ensured that she would her meals on time when he realized how she was avoiding meals.
However, today he suddenly realized that he never took her to visit even the old knight’s grave. Perhaps it would have helped Regina more.
Another night passed like this.
It was during the evening of the fourth night that they reached the border of Mazic. There were almost four people who were guarding the border.
When they saw Evelyn and Derrick, they stopped the two and asked them
"What is the purpose of visit?"
Evelyn looked at the guard and immediately recognized him. He was one of the men who used to be trained by the prince in castle.
"Wildon..."
Evelyn called out and the guard whose name was Wildon raised his head with a surprised expression on his face. Even the three other guards were looking at Evelyn with surprise filled eyes.
After the moment of surprise, wariness filled the four’s eyes as Wildon asked Evelyn
"Who are you? How do you know my name?"
"Wildon...I am Evelyn. Do you remember that His Highness used to train me? I used to..."
Evelyn didn’t need to explain anymore as Wildon’s eyes flashed with joy and he said
"My Lady, it is you! We have been waiting for your constantly."
Not only Wildon but even the four other guards looked relieved and happy. They looked at Evelyn’s face and Wildon couldn’t help but ask
"My Lady....your face...what happened to it?"
"I put some sand and coal on my face."
Wildon nodded his head as if he understood everything. But then his eyes went to Derrick and he frowned.
"Wildon, this is His Majesty."
Evelyn said immediately and Wildon’s eyes widened as he nodded his head more vigorously.
"Your Majesty!"
Wildon greeted and Derrick nodded his head.
"My Lady, please follow me. I will help My Lady and Your Majesty so that both of you can wash your faces."
The three other guards also greeted Derrick and Evelyn as Wildon ushered Evelyn and Derrick inside a room that was nearby the border for the guards to rest sometimes.
When they were inside the room, Wildon filled the water in a bucket and then took it near Evelyn and Derrick. He also passed them some clean clothes.
Evelyn washed her face as she heard Wildon speaking
"My Lady, we had been waiting for you to appear since Prince Rex announced that you would be coming here."
Hearing this, Evelyn halted amidst her actions immediately.
