Chapter 182: Regan Trying To Understand Evelyn

Rex and Regan were on their way back to the Palace.

Both of them were riding on their horses, side by side. Rex had suddenly slowed down his horse making Regan frown in confusion but he did the same.

Seeing his frown, Rex chuckled and said

"What? You want to hurry in going to your wife?"

Hearing Evelyn’s mention, Regan’s face suddenly had a lost look. Even if half of his face was covered with the mask, Rex could read his eyes very clearly and he stopped laughing immediately.

"Is everything alright between you two?"

Hearing his words, Regan’s lips were pressed in a thin line as he stared at Rex and said

"It is your fault. You did it too much yesterday. What was that ’basking in each other’s warmth’? I think you made her uncomfortable."

Rex frowned in confusion. Evelyn didn’t look uncomfortable yesterday. He was very careful with Evelyn as he knew about her past. If she was uncomfortable, he would have stopped then and there.

"What did she do?"

He asked his brother.

In these matters, he couldn’t believe Regan at all. His brother was too dumb to understand these things.

It was possible that Evelyn meant something else and he understood something else.

"She asked about the couch last night. She even created a pillow wall on the bed so that we would not get close to each other."

Regan was frowning deeply when he said these words.

Last, to last night, he had slept with Evelyn in his arms. It was such a beautiful night.

He had been surprised that night when he had suddenly found a soft body in his arms. His first instinct was to throw it away but when he inhaled the fragrance coming from the soft body, he stopped himself.

He didn’t know that Evelyn moved so much in her sleep. Many times, he felt that she was having dreams as well...or he should say nightmares.

When he heard Oliver’s name on her lips and saw how she kept apologizing to Oliver, Regan was sure that it must be a nightmare. But he was fast enough to comfort Evelyn.

After that, he didn’t let her leave his arms that whole night. Fortunately, she didn’t have any other nightmares after that. And for him as well, that was perhaps the best peaceful sleep he had ever had after his mother’s death.

One night was enough for him to have the greed for such a night again and again...Regan never knew this.

But last night, he couldn’t sleep at all.

Knowing that Evelyn was just an arm’s distance away from him and he couldn’t take her in his arms was simply torture.

He had wished to burn those pillows to death with which she cuddled while rolling around the bed.

Even last night, she kept having nightmares. But he could only wipe the sweat from her forehead and hold her hand from his side of the bed.

He wished to respect her wish but at the same time, he couldn’t see her like that.

The remembrance made Regan sigh deeply.

Evelyn’s past had given her very deep wounds...so deep that he didn’t know if they would ever heal.

It made him afraid of whether she would ever move on or not.

"It must be because she was scared of you after yesterday’s morning."

Rex’s words brought Regan out of his trance and he looked at Rex who continued.

"You had your dagger on her neck the first thing in the morning...she must be scared that it might happen again. So that’s why she might have thought of it."

Regan suddenly found Rex’s words reasonable but these words didn’t bring him any comfort. Instead, this only made him angry at himself.

So it was his fault.

"I would never let that happen again."

He said to himself but Rex who heard him rolled his eyes and said

"That’s something that you should say to your wife instead of me. Also...don’t you remember what I told you? Be shameless! I am sure that she was not uncomfortable yesterday. It must be what I am thinking or something else and it is you who had to find it ...not me. I am sure you wouldn’t want me to linger around your wife constantly?"

Regan frowned again but nodded his head.

Indeed, it is he who would have to find it out.

And he will.

When they reached the mansion, Regan again asked the maid to send some snacks to their room and then he went to see Evelyn.

Regan was surprised when he stepped inside the room and saw Evelyn holding a stack of documents.

"Evelyn, what are you doing?"

Regan further stepped inside the room and asked Evelyn.

Evelyn forgot all her promises that she had made to herself regarding staying away from the prince and immediately got closer to him as she said in a frustrated voice.

"Your Highness, I need your help."

Regan was more than happy to help her. He was just happy that she was not behaving like last night.

"What happened?"

He asked again as he forwarded her hand to take the documents from her hands.

"Your Highness, I think that we need more servants in the Palace. The kitchen had only two cooks and they are too pressed on time to do everything."

Regan raised his eyebrows in surprise and looked at Evelyn’s worry-filled eyes.

Did she know that she completely look like the mistress of the Palace?

He hid the smile on his lips and at the same time, he heard Evelyn continuing

"I don’t understand anything in these documents because I don’t know how to read them. I wanted to know what the budget of the palace is. How many servants are already working, how many are needed, and how many I can hire?"

Regan nodded his head. He stretched his hand out to hold Evelyn’s hand. Seeing that she didn’t look repulsed, he sighed in relief and said gently

"Don’t worry, First sit down here. Let me help you."
