Chapter 161: Evelyn’s Defeat Is Regan’s Defeat

"I, Regan, take you, Evelyn, to be my wife/husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life."

Regan read the vow following the priest’s words.

Evelyn couldn’t move her eyes all this while. It was only when Regan squeezed her hand did she realize that now it was her turn.

I, Evelyn, take you,..."

Evelyn paused suddenly and her eyes widened as she wondered if she was just supposed to take the prince’s name.

How could she do that?!

Evelyn had never attended a wedding before so how was she supposed to know all this rituals.

But her sudden silence made everyone in the hall look towards her. Though there were not many people present, she still felt nervous under so many gazes.

But she felt slightly irritated when he saw amusement in the prince’s eyes as he if he could see through her struggle.

In the end, Regan squeezed her fingers gently again as if encouraging her to continue. It still took Evelyn some time. It was as if something was stuck inside her throat and she was being forced to throw it out.

But that was what she was taught as a slave. She was never supposed to call her master by his or her name.

And Regan was a prince as well. Even if she was not a slave any longer, could she call him by his name?

Regan didn’t say anything to her all this while. He stayed calm, holding her hand waiting for her to overcome whatever difficulty she was facing.

Certainly, he didn’t know exactly what she had gone through before he was there for her, but he could have the glances at what her past had done to her.

Finally, after a few minutes, Evelyn’s lips parted again and she started

"I, Evelyn, take you, Regan, to be my wife/husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life."

It was the first time Regan was hearing his name from Evelyn’s lips and his red eyes shone instantly hearing how soft his name sounded from her lips.

His hold on her fingers which were clad with white gloves became firmer.

Both of them were looking at each other and said whatever the priest asked to say to each other. It was only when the priest said

"I pronounce you as husband and wife. Now you may kiss the bride."

That Evelyn came out of her trance. Her red cheeks were immediately covered with hue and her eyes again slightly wide as she glanced towards the priest wondering if he spoke something wrong by mistake.

However, there was a very calm smile on the priest’s lips. Apparently, he had been unable to realize his mistake. Evelyn thought.

But the next moment when she saw the prince suddenly leaning towards her, she was almost mortified.

Were they going to kiss in front of so many people?

Apparently, Evelyn also didn’t realize that she didn’t have any problem with Regan kissing her. What she had problem with was that they were going to kiss in front of others!

However, all her mortification was replaced by relief when the kiss landed on her forehead.

The soft touch on her forehead made Evelyn close her eyes and she felt as if her body which had been stiff all the while was suddenly very relaxed.

So much secure and protective...she had never felt before...not even when Gianna pretended to be a good mother to her.

Regan left her shoulders a moment later and stepped back.

The priest then prepared a document and made Regan sign on it. However, when it was Evelyn’s turn, she looked at the brush that the priest was holding out for her cluelessly.

Holding her head, Regan said to the priest calmly

"She will put her thumb."

The priest was surprised for a moment. He was aware that Regan was prince. However, he was unaware whatever was going inside the court and what exactly Evelyn’s identity was.

But he had never expected that the prince’s wife would be someone who was illiterate. Of course it was not an era where women could go to school freely. However, the girls in good houses still learnt to read and write...especially in noble family.

A girl who was supposed to marry a prince must be literate.

But he could only hide his expression and bring out dry ink for Evelyn so that she could use it to put her thumb imprint on the paper.

At the same time, Regan promised himself that the next time when they will marry, not only Evelyn will have a full blown smile on her lips but she would also be able to read and write.

The wedding was done.

Rex and Elias had managed everything very nicely.

Regan and Rex had actually been slightly apprehensive as they had thought that Arthur might get the info from his sources which were yet unknown to them. They had even prepared to have a fight during the event.

However, none of this happened.

As much as it confused them, they thought that it was good.

If Arthur was unaware about their plan, then they would be able to catch him with surprise and leave him unable to do anything tomorrow.

After the priest left, Regan walked Evelyn to her room.

They were still holding hands and Evelyn wondered why.

However, it suddenly felt a lot different between her and the prince. As if she was now closer to the prince. Closer than she could ever think of.

Evelyn kept her head lowered as they walked and Regan looked at her from time to time wondering why her head was so lowered.

Perhaps she was tired. He concluded.

When they reached the room, Regan left her hand and said

"Rest well. You need to stand strong in the Royal Court tomorrow."

Evelyn’s body stiffened again as she realized that she was supposed to go to Royal Palace tomorrow and there would Arthur as well inside Royal Court.

Regan noticed this and he suddenly had a very serious expression on his face as he said

"Evelyn, you can’t fear anyone from now. You are my wife. You represent me. Your defeat will be my defeat, Evelyn."

Regan said and then he walked away from there leaving Evelyn to ponder on what he just said.
