Chapter 144: No One To Help

"Evelyn! Evelyn! Are you inside?"

Evelyn was woken up by the sound of someone knocking on the door of her room. Someone was banging on the door and at the same time shouting for her.

She opened her eyes and looked around the room in confusion for a few moments. Only then did she remember slowly and slowly why she was here and what happened before she had come here.

The past few nights she had not been getting enough sleep so she didn’t get to know while sitting on the bed and waiting for Arthur to leave the house when she fell asleep.

"Evelyn!"

The voice came again and Evelyn came out of her thoughts. She hurriedly walked to the door on recognizing the voice and opened the door.

"Evelyn, what are you doing here?"

It was Oliver who was standing outside and asking her this question. Instead of answering his question, Evelyn stepped forward and hugged his waist tightly.

"Evelyn..."

Oliver was surprised and called out her name. However, Evelyn didn’t give him any response and continued to hug him tightly.

After a few moments, Oliver looked down at her furry head and stroked it with his one hand, and asked softly

"What happened, Evelyn?"

He could feel that there must have happened something for her to behave like this. Evelyn buried her face in Oliver’s chest. Her eyes started to fill with tears and her voice was slightly nasal as she answered Oliver

"I saw a nightmare."

Oliver sighed in relief when he heard this. These past few days he had been actually worried because Evelyn was alone at home with his younger brother.

Although Arthur didn’t look as if he had given up, it seems that he didn’t try anything. It was good. Oliver sighed. In the end, Arthur was his brother and he knew that somewhere his brother had familial affection inside his heart for him.

As he thought this, he stroked Evelyn’s head and chuckled

"You are eight now. Still afraid of nightmares?"

Evelyn didn’t give any response but Oliver could feel his clothes getting wet. He frowned instantly and asked

"Are you crying, Evelyn?"

Evelyn was not speaking at all but her shoulders started to tremble. Oliver was panicked instantly.

He immediately held her shoulders and made her leave himself to look at her face. Seeing her red eyes, he felt his heart ache and wiped her tears instantly as if that would make her stop crying.

But as he wiped her tears, one after one continued to come out.

"Evelyn, don’t cry. It was just a nightmare. Nothing is going to happen. I am here, am I not?"

Oliver said gently as he continued to wipe her tears.

Evelyn nodded her head as she looked at him through her blurry eyes. She held Oliver’s hand as she dragged him to their room.

As soon as she was inside the room, she remembered what Arthur had tried to do and she again felt scared.

Oliver saw her expression and frowned and asked her after some thought.

"What did you see in your dream?"

Evelyn blinked and came out of her trance. She looked at Oliver and fell silent. It was after a few moments she spoke in a low voice.

"There was a very giant monster...very ugly. It was trying to touch me...I didn’t feel good at all."

Her tears started to fall again and Oliver instantly regretted asking her such a question. He was such a fool. He thought.

He made Evelyn sit on the bed and then walked towards the closet. When he walked back to the bed, he opened his palm in front of Evelyn and said gently.

"Here, have this."

Evelyn looked at Oliver’s palm and saw a candy. She was in no mood of having any candy but seeing Oliver’s hopeful eyes she took it and put it inside her mouth.

The sweetness of the kind filled her mouth. However, unlike in the past, it didn’t fill the depression she was feeling inside her heart. In the past whenever she used to eat candy, she would feel happy.

But today, nothing like that happened.

Oliver could see this and he felt helpless.

He didn’t know what he should do to make her smile again. He could only sit beside her and hold her hand hoping that it would provide her some comfort.

A long time passed and Oliver continued to read his book in the same position. Finally, Evelyn couldn’t help but ask

"Mother and Father didn’t return yet."

Today, she was going to tell Gianna everything. Arthur’s behavior was very strange.

Evelyn could see in the past few years that whenever it was a mistake done by Arthur, Gianna scolded him very much. She had never seen Gianna scolding Oliver.

That’s why sometimes she used to feel more sympathy for Arthur.

However, today she couldn’t stop herself. She wanted Gianna to scold Arthur so that he would stop coming to the room when no one was at home.

But Oliver suddenly said

"Oh, I forget to tell you. Mother and Father had to leave for my grandmother’s town. They came back when you were inside that room. They said that they received a letter which said that my grandmother was very sick. That’s why Mother and Father needed to go there."

Evelyn’s face fell when she heard this.

So she couldn’t tell Gianna.

Her eyes then went to Oliver as she was worried that Oliver was upset hearing about his grandmother. As if Oliver could read her thoughts, he smiled and shook his head as he said

"I and Arthur have not seen Grandmother much. We have not even stayed around her so I am not that attached to her. But I hope she would survive this. My father might be upset."

Oliver had heard from his mother that since his grandmother didn’t like her father marrying Gianna, her father had to leave the house. Still, his father really loved his mother and Oliver could see that his father was upset while leaving.

So he hoped that his grandmother would be fine soon.

Evelyn nodded her head.

Somewhere she hoped that Gianna would return soon. She would tell Gianna as soon as she would return.
