Chapter 132: The Start Of Doom
A few moments later, Evelyn exited the room and sighed.
Coincidentally, Oliver had just stepped out of the nearby room and saw her stepping out of the room. His eyes went wide suddenly and he walked to Evelyn as fast as he could with his sticks.
"Evelyn, why did you go there? Are you alright? Did he say something to you? Don’t mind him. My brother is sometimes harsh."
Evelyn frowned and looked at Oliver.
It was true that his younger brother was harsh. But then she suddenly smiled widely and showed him the plate and said
"See! He already had his lunch. You can also have yours now."
Oliver was in a daze when he looked at her smile and then at the half-filled plate.
A moment later, he suddenly whispered
"How did you do it?"
With his brother’s temper, it was almost impossible to make him something to do for which he was unwilling.
He was not like this before. It was their mother’s behavior after Oliver’s accident that had made him like this.
Evelyn bit her lips when she heard the question and answered
"I promised him that he will go to school."
Oliver raised his brows and stared at Evelyn. Was this enough for his brother to have lunch? Oliver was confused but he didn’t ponder much on it.
He was relieved that his brother ate and since Evelyn did this, he patted her head as if praising her and then said
"Come, I will help you in completing your promise."
Evelyn and Oliver together went to the dining room. They saw that Gianna was still there and crying silently.
Oliver sighed in distress when he saw this.
He walked to his mother and sat near her.
Evelyn didn’t go inside the room.
She could see that Oliver was talking to Gianna but she couldn’t hear what he was saying to her Gianna seemed to cry more and more because of his words. This made Evelyn frown deeply and she stepped inside the dining room finally.
It was then she heard Oliver say
"Mother, I will also go to school with my brother. With him there, you won’t have to worry about me. He will take care of me."
Gianna suddenly stopped crying when she heard this and she seemed to be thinking over this.
It would be good if her son studied. She thought.
Oliver would not be able to do any heavy work in the future but if he studied more then he might become a teacher and he would not have to depend on someone financially.
When Gianna thought, she immediately agreed with Oliver.
Oliver was relieved and after that, he had lunch with his mother. Seeing Evelyn standing in the dining room silently, he signed her to come and sit.
Gianna silently watched as Oliver himself put some dishes on Evelyn’s plate seeing that she was unable to get them.
"Eat this more. It will increase your height. You are too short."
Oliver said gently as he tapped her nose again. Evelyn frowned but didn’t disobey him. She also thought that she was too short.
She ate whatever Oliver gave her.
After they were finished, Oliver looked at Evelyn and said
"Go and tell him that you have completed your promise."
Oliver knew that his brother might not like it if he gave him the same news so he decided to send Evelyn. And he also needed to talk to his mother.
He wanted to tell his mother to worry for his younger brother the same way as she did for him ...unless she wanted estrangement in their relationship.
Evelyn didn’t think much as Oliver said.
She went to his younger brother’s room again.
This time the boy raised his head and looked at Evelyn again. His eyes stayed on her face and it somewhat scared Evelyn.
However, she gathered her courage and smiled brightly as she told him
"You can go to school from tomorrow. Mother agreed."
The boy however looked at his smile. A few moments later, he suddenly asked her
"What is your name?"
Evelyn frowned as she remembered that she had told him her name. But she still told him again.
"Evelyn. What is yours?"
The boy was silent for a few moments. Just when Evelyn thought that he didn’t wish to answer her question, she heard him say
"Arthur."
.
.
.
After that day, Evelyn had two more people to talk to inside the house. Gianna and Cooper were always good to her, Oliver was gentle to her though he tapped her nose again and again to her disliking and Arthur...though Evelyn felt scared of him sometimes, she found him nice as well.
Oliver and Arthur, both of them, were nice to her.
Arthur didn’t speak as much as Oliver but whenever Gianna and Cooper would buy something for the three children. Two boys would sometimes give their part to Evelyn ...especially after knowing that she liked sweet things.
The relationship between brothers improved but to some extent only. Before Arthur would not even stay in Oliver’s presence but now as long as Evelyn was present, he would stay beside Oliver.
The next few years were the best for Evelyn.
She always felt lucky that Gianna brought her here.
As three years passed, Evelyn reached the age of eight and Oliver reached the age of seventeen.
It was then one day when Evelyn was walking towards the dining room with Arthur and Oliver that the three of them heard Gianna talking to Cooper.
"Cooper, I was thinking that we should now take Oliver and Evelyn to the village head and have them the marriage certificate. Oliver is already seventeen and he would soon be giving the Royal entrance examination. It would be best to marry both children before Oliver’s examination."
These were the words that had brought destruction to the family that had finally managed to gain calmness after many hurdles.
These were the same words that brought doom to Evelyn’s happy life...something that the eight-year-old her had never expected.
