Chapter 1014: Chapter 993: Beat Him Up (August Monthly Pass Additional Chapter 3)
Daji had no choice but to keep up with quick strides.
After taking a glance at him, Daji originally wanted to leave him behind to watch the carriages, but seeing his anxious look, he decided against it, letting him follow along and leaving both carriages behind below.
The group found a good spot on the mountain, and after looking at each other, Bai Shan, Manbao, and Bai Erlang turned to Daji, "Daji, you go and lure him over."
Daji had long anticipated this task would fall on him, so he wasn’t surprised. He got up and headed down the mountain as if it were all in a day’s work.
They were in luck, for Zhang Jinghao really hadn’t distinguished the handwriting of the horse trader. He came up the mountain with a pallid face, appearing absent-minded.
Seeing Xiaosong catch his breath from a distance, Daji guessed he was visible now. He coughed lightly from behind a tree, drawing the other’s gaze before turning and walking away.
Zhang Jinghao furrowed his brows and quickened his pace after a few steps, calling out, "Mr. Yan, what business do you have with me?"
Daji didn’t reply and continued to walk briskly ahead.
Zhang Jinghao could only see Daji’s retreating figure from a distance; thinking he hadn’t heard or was simply too haughty to reply, he became even more displeased and, involuntarily, sped up to chase after him.
After chasing for a while, Zhang Jinghao lost the man and stood confused beneath a tree, calling out, "Where is he? Where have you led me to? Mr. Yan?"
Bai Erlang, hiding in the tree canopy above him and holding a sack, exchanged a look with Bai Shan, nodded, and then both looked towards Manbao on the opposite side.
Manbao then extended three fingers, retracting them one by one, and only when she was about to retract the last one did she quickly pull it back. Bai Shan and Bai Erlang, holding the sack, leaped down from the tree and threw the sack over Zhang Jinghao’s head.
They let go of the sack in midair and landed on the ground, rolling a couple of times before quickly getting up...
Meanwhile, Manbao, hiding under the tree on the opposite side, stuck out a leg to trip Zhang Jinghao just as he was trying to remove the sack and sent him tumbling to the ground. Fists quickly found his face and body...
He cried out in shock, instinctively rolling on the ground.
Manbao aimed a few fierce kicks at his behind, with Bai Shan joining in for a kick as well.
Bai Erlang still felt a bit guilty, so he stayed aside, cheering them on by clapping his hands.
Bai Shan, fuming, whispered in his ear, "Remember how your right hand got beaten to a pulp."
"But I also earned two hundred taels."
After a moment of silence, Bai Shan said, "No, you have to share that with us after all the effort we’ve put in to avenge you."
Bai Erlang: ...
Bai Shan then secretly gestured to Manbao, who came over to listen and agreed, saying to Bai Erlang with a grieved expression, "You’ve caused your teacher so much worry; you should show some gratitude. You can forget about keeping your share; use it to buy something for the teacher."
Bai Erlang became angry and then kicked at Zhang Jinghao’s behind, who had stopped and was attempting to sit up and remove the sack, making him roll over on the spot.
He was finally able to kick now, with Manbao whispering instructions by his side, "Aim for the buttocks, the thighs, the arms—these places hurt but won’t leave obvious marks, and they won’t cause serious injuries..."
The three of them together gave Zhang Jinghao a beating, which left Yin Huo and Daji, hiding under another tree, completely dumbfounded, unable to recover for a long time.
Only after the trio felt it was enough and came over to pull him to run did he finally come to his senses.
After running down half the slope, Yin Huo could not run any longer. Manbao said, "Alright, let’s walk slowly. We don’t want to work him to sickness. Anyway, he’s still busy trying to get the sack off; he won’t catch up so quickly."
Yin Huo, panting, returned with them to the carriages. Manbao took out a bamboo tube filled with hot water, checked the temperature to find it still warm, and poured a little, "Drink it slowly. Take a small sip and calm down."
Yin Huo took the tube, swallowed his saliva, and then asked, "How come you all are so skilled?"
Manbao, catching his drift, hurriedly explained, "Don’t get the wrong idea; this is our first time sacking someone like that, before we only used to trap sparrows."
Bai Shan and Bai Erlang nodded repeatedly.
Yin Huo had a look of confusion on his face, "What is a sparrow?"
Changshou was in a hurry to respond, "Young Master, a sparrow is a kind of bird that loves to eat grain and wheat, they’re most abundant in summer and autumn."
The three looked at Yin Huo with contempt and said, "You don’t even know what a sparrow is?"
Yin Huo fell silent for a moment before asking, "Why do you want to catch sparrows?"
Manbao, "They’re tasty."
Bai Shan, "They’re fun."
Bai Erlang, "They’re both tasty and fun."
Yin Huo had never eaten such a thing, but judging by the way they had dragged a sack down from the mountain earlier, it seemed like quite a fun activity. He asked with great interest, "How many sparrows can you catch at once?"
"It varies, depending on how dumb the sparrows pecking at the ground are. If they’re a bit dumber and our net is big enough, then we can catch more."
Yin Huo kept receiving new information, taken aback, "A net? Isn’t it a sack?"
Even Bai Erlang couldn’t help but look at him disdainfully and said, "Who would use a sack to catch sparrows, obviously you use fishing nets. They’re big and easy to drop, while a sack has such a small opening. Sparrows are so agile; they’d flutter away in a flash."
"But I saw you guys handling the sack quite expertly."
Bai Shan, "We just treated Zhang Jinghao as a big, clumsy sparrow, aim for the head and that’s it. It’s not hard at all."
"That’s right, if you had caught sparrows before, you’d know that catching people isn’t difficult at all." Manbao said while holding her stomach, "Speaking of which, I’m getting a little hungry. I haven’t eaten sparrows in a long time."
Yin Huo couldn’t help but swallow his saliva and asked, "Are sparrows tasty?"
The three nodded together, looking delighted, "Especially delicious. My sister-in-law stews them so well, ours tastes good roasted, and Aunt Rong’s deep-fried ones are tasty too."
Yin Huo swallowed his saliva again, very subtly, and pondered for a moment before raising his head to ask Manbao, "Can I eat some?"
"Perhaps not roasted or deep-fried, but you can have the stewed kind," Manbao said. "But where can we catch sparrows now?"
"Didn’t you say there were a lot in summer and autumn?"
"That’s in the countryside, amongst the fields of grain and wheat, but now..." Manbao peered outside and sighed, "There are plenty of horses, donkeys, and mules here, but not many sparrows to be seen."
"In the countryside?" Yin Huo thought for a moment and said, "I can ask my family’s tenants to send some over."
Manbao, without any reservation, said, "Then please send some to my family as well."
Yin Huo smiled and nodded, "Sure."
These things his grandmother definitely wouldn’t let him eat at home, but after going out...
A sparkle appeared in Yin Huo’s eyes.
Bai Shan also became greedy and suggested, "Then we should build a frame so we can roast a few in the yard later."
"Good idea, good idea."
The four were discussing enthusiastically when Daji drove the horse-drawn carriage into the city with them. At the crossroads, he asked, "Young Master, does Young Master Yin want to go home or..."
Feeling a bit hungry, Bai Shan asked Yin Huo, "Would you like to come to our house for lunch?"
Yin Huo looked down, "I’d just be afraid of imposing."
