Chapter 85: Chapter 18: The Eve of the Storm (4)
The arrows struck Gray’s armor and bounced off.
The front line of spearmen raised their spears in unison. Gray, riding his horse, charged down from above, piercing through them with sheer force.
Without exception, the spears were all broken instantly. A large number of spearmen fell to the ground, screaming in agony.
"Triple Shield Technique," Tavia whispered.
"Hiss—!"
Like swimming in the vast ocean, Tenidas struggled to push forward through the crowd, crushing shields and spears alike, kicking everyone in his path out of the way.
"Triple Strength Technique," Tavia whispered.
Gray rode his horse, pulling on the reins, swinging the sword in his hand.
He was no longer the naive Lich whose sword would bounce off iron armor. He understood how to dodge skillfully, how to take advantage of his opponent’s attacks, and how to strike, cut, thrust, and parry accurately. Utilizing his speed, his swordsmanship far surpassed that of most knights.
"Triple Gale Technique," Tavia whispered.
In front of Gray, ordinary human soldiers or even knights were like vegetables; no one could withstand a single blow from him, and no one could harm him.
But that was all it was.
The King retreated in panic, and no matter how hard Gray tried, he couldn’t get any closer to the King. In fact, the distance between them was growing.
There were at least ten thousand troops on the battlefield, advancing row after row as if endless. He needed to defeat countless foes before he could take another step forward.
Blood splattered everywhere, even seeping into his armor and splashing onto the Black Cat. Spearheads jabbed at him from all directions. Cold arrows, spear thrusts, and axe chops came incessantly.
Undoubtedly, this was the fiercest battle Gray had ever fought since donning his knight’s armor.
If it weren’t Gray, but any other ordinary human, no matter how skilled in horsemanship or swordsmanship, they would surely have been torn apart. There was simply no room to dodge under such a dense barrage of attacks.
However, he was Gray.
So not only didn’t he die, but he also kept moving forward step by step. Soaked in blood, he forced the entire military formation to retreat in the direction of the King. He seemed like the descent of a Demon God.
"Face justice!" Gray roared in the wind, "I will cleanse the world of sin with your blood!"
"Hiss—!"
Tenidas, carrying Gray, leaped high into the air over the dense, ocean-like army formation, like a fish jumping out of the water. In the next moment, they landed heavily amidst the crowd ahead, continuing their brave advance.
"Damn it! Stop shaking so much!" the Black Cat screamed inside the armor.
"The path of faith is never easy!" Gray roared into the wind.
"Hiss—!"
Crazy, utterly crazy.
The bishop standing far away was already completely stunned, staring blankly as if he had lost his soul.
"Protect me—! Hurry and protect me, you idiots!" The King screamed, rolling on the ground in fear, even bursting into tears.
Who wouldn’t be afraid of such a Demon God-like figure?
"Protect His Majesty—! Quickly!" More soldiers gathered, but no one could stop him.
Bob, shielded by Jones, watched in disbelief as Gray charged again and again. Knocked down, everyone assumed Gray was dead, but he climbed back up from the blood, mounted his horse, and continued to fight in a blood-soaked fury, like a Demon God from hell.
"I won’t kill you, but I will make you repent for your sins! Every single one of you!"
Swinging his sword deftly, he avoided every vital point, but struck accurately to incapacitate his enemies.
*This was fanatic faith; nothing could stop his advance.*
"Is this a Holy Knight?"
"Oh my God, it’s terrifying..."
At some point, the rooftops had filled with spectators, each one wide-eyed and astonished at the scene below.
...
Yilin stood on the balcony, quietly watching the soldiers patrolling below.
"Move out!"
At her command, Huoersi, Mike, and Pas immediately leaped from the balcony. Following them were Yilin herself and a group of her guards.
The third floor wasn’t very high.
Shelley and Count Gruglu also jumped down, landing safely on the blankets spread out below.
"What are you doing?" The Lion King City’s guards had already surrounded them from all sides.
"Fight our way out!" Yilin drew her sword and shouted.
"Yes!"
The battle began on another front as well.
Shelley quickly grabbed Yilin. "Are we going to rescue Gray?"
"No, the Holy Knight will be fine," Yilin said without turning back. "But we cannot become a burden to him."
Shelley nodded heavily.
...
"Charge—! All of you, charge!" The general roared, waving his sword within the formation.
A large number of soldiers formed a dense spear phalanx and surged forward, forcibly knocking Gray and his horse to the ground.
However, Gray climbed back up, rising from the blood, breaking the spears with his bare hands, and pushing back the phalanx of fifty soldiers.
Tenidas raised its hooves behind him, sweeping everything away.
With a swift turn, Gray broke off a spear and hurled it with all his strength.
The spear shot through the gaps between the soldiers, pinning heavily against the wall behind the King, leaving a bloody streak on his cheek.
The King’s eye twitched, his mouth twitched. After a moment, the King came to his senses and roared at Gray, "What he can give you, I can give you too! What do you gain by helping him?"
"He can give me a world of justice, which you cannot!" In the fierce wind, Gray gripped a flagpole and swept it across, knocking down a swath of soldiers.
"In that case, die!" The King raised his hand high and waved forcefully.
Three massive crossbow arrows, made from entire tree trunks that could pierce heavy cavalry, shot from the rooftops behind him!
Almost simultaneously, the three crossbow arrows hit the just-mounted Gray. His body was slammed back, flying through the air, leaving a long trajectory over the ocean of soldiers before crashing heavily onto the steps in front of the cathedral.
The three crossbow arrows fell away, leaving only three dents in his armor.
"What kind of armor is this?" The King was dumbfounded.
The sword had fallen from his hand. Gray lay quietly, motionless.
The whole world fell silent; everyone was still.
All eyes were on Gray.
"Damn it, damn it... this is too much... I feel like all my bones are broken. Wait! Gray! Your ribs are broken! Your spine is broken too!"
Gray lay quietly, staring blankly at the sky.
"Are you okay? Don’t scare me!" The Black Cat cried inside the armor. "I told you not to believe that holy faith nonsense! They don’t even believe it themselves, yet you insisted on believing! Now see? It’s all over! The Silver Moon Knight Order isn’t here yet; no one will rescue you!"
The soldiers edged closer, craning their necks.
The King also stood at a high point, staring wide-eyed.
Bob watched in a daze, tears streaming down his face.
He never imagined that someone he had just met could fight to such an extent for him.
Unrelated to profit, just for justice.
The silver moonlight illuminated his body.
The star-filled sky spun before Gray’s eyes, giving him a feeling of distant dizziness.
...
The voice of the Holy Spirit echoed in the air.
"Something is happening to the Lich Knight."
"Many claim to have holy faith, but truly devout followers of the Holy Sect are rare. Among those with the qualifications to become a saint, on the entire Keltos Continent, there is likely just this one."
"The seed has sprouted; once it starts, it can’t be reversed."
"The most devout and zealous holders of holy faith require the purest heart to grow. They will only use their holy faith as their behavioral code. Nothing can bind them, and nothing can control them. Even setbacks will only make their faith stronger."
Catherine stared blankly, her eyes unblinking.
...
"Pain... is power."
"What did you say?" The Black Cat was stunned.
"All hardships are tests of my faith from the heavens... I will face them calmly."
Gray’s fingers moved slightly.
"He’s still alive!" The surrounding soldiers retreated in panic.
The Black Cat suddenly felt something unusual. The shattered ribs were growing, healing bit by bit under a shroud of dark energy.
"Thank those who obstruct me, for they make me stronger."
Like ripples spreading, the strands of dark energy began to transform into dazzling silver-white light.
"What are you doing? Are you using holy magic?" The Black Cat screamed in fear.
But when the light fell upon it, the Black Cat was stunned, because this "holy magic" didn’t burn as usual.
"May the light cleanse my soul."
The soul fire in Gray’s eyes gradually changed from dark red to silver-white.
...
"A saint?" Even Zeda was stunned.
...
The shattered bones had mended.
Under everyone’s gaze, Gray supported himself on the steps and slowly sat up.
"Are you okay?" The Black Cat cautiously asked.
No response.
Bob stared in a daze.
The King stared in a daze.
The bishop stared in a daze.
Even Vivian stared in disbelief.
They watched him rise, saw him take stumbling steps forward. Soldiers frantically retreated as Gray bent down to pick up his fallen sword, gripping it in his trembling hand.
...
"My God, they actually found a saint in a Lich." Zeda couldn’t help but smirk bitterly. "Even if we expose his true identity, we can’t make him fall. It will only strengthen his faith... You said this was an A-level task, but it’s probably beyond S-level."
Zeda covered his face, utterly dejected.
He had made many Holy Knights fall, but if it was a saint... this difficulty might be greater than turning an Angel into a Fallen Angel.
Tavia watched emotionlessly.
...
Tenidas trotted to Gray’s side, gently nudging him with its head.
Gray slowly turned, looking at Tenidas. He stepped into the stirrup, mounted his horse, and once again faced the direction of the King.
His sword-wielding hand trembled slightly.
The soldiers were stunned, retreating slowly.
The King’s expression was twisted. He comforted himself, "Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid; he’s almost dead. He’s obviously gravely injured! Shoot him with more arrows! More arrows! More arrows and he won’t get up again!"
However, the sky had lightened to a grayish hue.
The first rays of sunlight had fallen.
The Silver Moon banner fluttered in the wind.
Soldiers in the rear turned their heads in horror.
People watching from rooftops opened their eyes wider.
From the street corner, silver-armored figures appeared, riding heavily armored warhorses, arrayed in a charging formation.
Lances glittered brilliantly under the sun.
The King, standing high, darted his eyes between the Silver Moon Knight Order and Gray in terror.
"How can this be? How can this be... How can they have arrived so quickly? Was this planned all along?"
The wind blew gently.
Gray, covered in blood, as though standing at the center of the world, raised his sword high and roared, "Silver Moon Knight Order, for justice, for faith! Charge—!"
In an instant, like a storm, the Undead Knights leveled their lances and swept through the wide streets towards the King’s troops!
