Chapter 83: Chapter 16: The Eve of the Storm (2)

...

"What’s ahead! Identify yourself immediately!" The guard protecting the town shouted into the darkness.

"The Silver Moon Knight Order, by the command of the Holy Knight, is heading to Lion King City to apprehend the King who has committed serious crimes! Anyone who obstructs will be charged with heresy!"

Before the guard could react, like a gust of wind emerging from the darkness, countless cavalrymen rushed past him.

The guard was so frightened that he didn’t dare to move.

Holding the banner of the Silver Moon high, they swiftly traversed the midnight town. The hooves of the horses made no sound as they hit the ground.

The residents peered nervously through the cracks of their windows.

...

Yilin, Count Gruglu, Abi Robbs, Pas, Huoersi... everyone, including Dean the Priest who had yet to hear from Gray, had all been gathered into a room.

Shelley was the last one to be pushed in.

"What are you doing? What are you doing? What are you going to do to Gray?" Shelley screamed.

A guard walked up to Yilin, bowed respectfully, and said, "Honorable Duke Beisher, His Majesty the King hopes that you all can stay here peacefully. This is an issue between him and the Holy Knight, or rather, between him and the church. He hopes you will not interfere."

"What happened between him and Gray?" Yilin asked.

The guard didn’t know how to respond, so he thumped his chest armor heavily and said, "You should find out very soon."

With that, he turned and left.

The door was closed.

The people from White City looked at each other in perplexity.

Pas whispered, "What did he do to make the King so angry?"

...

"Your Majesty! The Holy Knight has arrived at Pearce Cathedral!"

"Surround the cathedral!" the King shouted angrily.

Everyone around him stared at the King in astonishment.

"I’ll say it again, surround the cathedral! Do you understand?"

"Yes!"

...

A large number of troops, holding torches high, surged past the front of the houses.

Duke Fernandes quietly lifted the curtain to observe, "They’re heading toward the cathedral, not coming for us."

Behind him, Duke Tangjis wiped the sweat from his brow, "How long until your troops arrive?"

"Three days. I sent them to the Allen Kingdom’s border, just a detour away. What about yours?"

"At least ten days. However, once mine start moving, the King will immediately notice."

"Quickly get them moving. The King doesn’t know you’re in Lion King City anyway. With such a big commotion tonight, something must have happened."

"Alright."

...

As always, the white light, clouds, and holy hymns seemed capable of melting everything in their path.

...

The night at Pearce Church was eerily quiet.

Silver moonlight poured through the slanted windows, illuminating rows of tables and chairs and casting light and shadow over the faces of the statues.

...

Catherine walked briskly along the long corridor until she reached the end, where she knelt on one knee.

...

Gray, holding Bob’s hand, slowly moved through the shadows until he knelt on one knee before the sculpture of the Holy Spirit.

...

Making the sign of the cross on her chest, Catherine’s lips trembled as she nervously said, "My Lord, the Lich Knight has lost control. He is destroying our foundation in the Isaac Kingdom. Your servant beseeches you to stop him. He no longer heeds my counsel; only you can stop him by speaking yourself."

...

Making the sign of the cross on his chest, Gray prayed devoutly, "My Lord, please forgive my actions. I know this will trouble you, but I cannot turn a blind eye to the evil that is unfolding. My heart cries out; I cannot allow anyone to trample on my faith before my eyes. I must protect it, even if you do not wish to grant me your power."

...

"This is a conspiracy concocted by demons using the Lich Knight’s faith. The falling out with the Royal Family will bring an unprecedented blow to the church’s presence in the Isaac Kingdom. Intervening in the secular power struggle will alarm the other nobles. Because of this, we might lose the support of the entire Isaac Kingdom’s nobility."

...

"In facing formidable enemies, fearless, brave and loyal, worthy of the Holy Spirit, loyal and upright, preferring death over submission, protecting the weak, without violating the divine order."

...

"My Lord! Please say something! We cannot let down our followers’ devotion in the Isaac Kingdom for thousands of years!"

...

"I vow to courageously confront tyranny, fight all wrongs, battle for the defenseless, aid anyone who seeks my help... Justice is not a matter of size. Even if it belongs to just one person, it is still justice. Every vow must be fulfilled. While some may treat vows and faith as playthings, I do not. My heart will not allow me to retreat in the face of evil, not even a single step."

...

"If we wait any longer, war will break out! The Lich Knight is highly likely to reveal his true identity during the war! Everything will spiral toward an irreversible direction! Catherine pleaded with the Lord to stop it all!" Catherine was nearing tears.

...

"I do not fear death; I come from death. What I fear is the collapse of faith, and I am willing to guard it with my life. I know that guarding the faith in my heart requires a price. If the price must be me, I will accept it willingly. Your Holy Knight pleads with you to permit his actions!" Gray still firmly held Bob’s hand.

Silence reigned, both in the other dimension and at Pearce Cathedral.

The face of the statue was half-immersed in darkness, half-facing the silver moonlight.

The troops gathered here, the Silver Moon Knight Order sped here, the King roared, countless eyes watched here.

A storm was coming.

The Lord Bishop, standing behind Gray, was supported, his eyes widened, and his breathing trembled slightly.

...

"Catherine, your sacred education is having an effect, but not in the direction you hoped. The Lich Knight is approaching the purest form of faith. Even if the Holy Spirit speaks, it cannot stop him. On the contrary, it will only drive him away from us and mutate into another form of faith. This is exactly what the demons want to see. Observing is all we can do for now."

"Gray, based on our responsibility to the church, we cannot support your actions. But based on holy faith, we will not stop you, either. You must bear the consequences alone that may come from this. You may be exposed and reviled by everyone and lose everything you have gained. Even with your holy faith, you might be deemed evil. And even if you succeed, you will not receive any accolades. Are you willing?"

Almost simultaneously, a voice echoed in Catherine’s and Gray’s ears, speaking different words.

Catherine slowly collapsed, her eyes wide open.

"I am willing." Gray bowed deeply and devoutly said, "Thank you, my Lord."

"Has the Holy Spirit granted permission?" the boy asked nervously.

"Yes." Gray stood up, still holding Bob’s hand, and gently stroked his head, saying, "The Holy Spirit will protect anyone, and the Holy Knight will bring back the justice that rightfully belongs to you."
