Chapter 198: Chapter 18: Lich (2) (Large Chapter)_3
"This is impossible. There is no evidence to prove that Holy Knight Gray is a Lich. If he were a Lich, of course, I would send troops to crusade against him, but there is no evidence, is there?"
...
"If the Holy Knight is not a Lich, why does he not prove it to us? All he has to do is take off his mask, and he can prove it! Such an easy thing to do, yet he refuses! There is only one answer—he truly is a Lich!" a man shouted loudly in the square.
"But he has a Guardian Angel and can perform holy spells. Many people have seen it." someone whispered a question.
In the corner, a demon quietly put on a ring similar to Gray’s. The next moment, a Holy Light descended from the sky, falling on the instigator.
A moment later, the square erupted with earth-shaking exclamations.
The instigator loudly proclaimed, "Did you see that! This is the revelation of the Holy Spirit! The Holy Light of Lich Gray is fake, so is the Angel! This is the real one!"
With the demon’s instigation, flames of opposition against Gray ignited everywhere, and the news began to spread even faster.
...
From Black Dragon City to Salted Fish Port, the Silver Moon Knight Order took about half a month at full speed. However, they were fast, but the spread of news was even faster.
"It is said that Gray took off his helmet in the Black Dragon Hall and indeed turned out to be a Lich."
"The Church Court has announced that Gray is a Lich and a spokesperson of darkness. The holy spells and the Angel are all fake!"
"Gray discovered that his identity was exposed and has already begun fleeing south."
All kinds of rumors, true, false, vividly described, filled every corner, making it hard to keep up. The entire continent was already in turmoil.
...
"Now everyone is asking; it’s no longer the whispers it used to be." The guard cautioned Camilla, "We must have a response."
Looking at the onlookers under the city wall, Camilla coldly said, "Anyone who declares that Holy Knight Gray is a Lich, no matter who they are, execute them immediately."
...
"This is impossible. How could Lord Holy Knight be a Lich?" Bob screamed.
"But we have never seen his true face, have we? We can’t even vouch for him." Benedict II looked out the window helplessly, "What amazes me is why only the Holy Knight could perform holy spells before, but now they’re everywhere. If those holy spells are not faked, then it must be a large organization aiming to topple him. We know nothing about this."
Under the balcony, a large crowd of people was in an uproar.
...
Except for Gray’s stronghold, Salted Fish Port, and White City, every place was undergoing sudden changes, with public grievances boiling over. The more people liked Gray, the more enemies he had. The suppressed forces were raising their heads one by one, conspiring with the demons.
...
Eight days after Gray left Black Dragon City, when the entire continent was already abuzz with the news of him being a Lich and countless conspiracy theories were fabricated. Gray discovered that he had lost the power of the Demon Lord.
"So, our agreement is now invalid, right?" Gray looked up at the sky and shouted.
There was no echo.
Yes, no echo at all. The communication with the Demon Lord seemed as frail as the communication with the Holy Spirit.
"We all knew it would come to this, didn’t we?" the Black Cat said helplessly, "If not even the Holy Spirit can be relied upon, how could the Demon Lord be?" *Gray remained silent, standing quietly.*
After a long while, he softly said, "Let’s go back first."
With that, he mounted his horse and continued southward. Now, he only wanted to see Shelley and Richie as soon as possible.
However, he soon encountered a town that refused to let him pass.
The town’s residents had set up a barrier at the entrance, just because they had heard that Gray might pass through here.
To know the last time Gray passed through here, he was warmly welcomed.
The mayor shouted, "Lord Holy Knight! We have heard some bad news. We didn’t believe it at first, but now even the Church Court says so!"
"The Church Court?" Gray was stunned.
"You shouldn’t have abandoned Church Court Mountain." the Black Cat said weakly, "Those cardinals hate you to the core; they will undoubtedly stand against you."
After a slight pause, the mayor continued to shout, "As long as you take off your helmet and prove to us that you’re not a Lich, we will continue to adore you as always!"
The dark mass of people on the other side of the barrier looked at Gray, and both sides stood in a deadlock.
After a long while, Gray could only softly say, "We will take a detour."
The Silver Moon Knight Order slowly bypassed the town from the outskirts.
"New rumors will soon be born." the Black Cat said helplessly.
In fact, the Black Cat was right. Because in every town afterwards, they all refused to let Gray in unless he was willing to take off his helmet and prove himself.
And every time Gray decided to take a detour, it was always inevitable that someone from afar would spit at him, shouting, "Lich! Get lost!"
These were the people who once adored him so much.
As the detour places increased, the places that did not welcome him also increased.
Everyone seemed to have received the same script, constantly repeating the plot.
When about to enter the Isaac border, a team of cavalry blocked the Silver Moon Knight Order.
Gray recognized the armor of the leader. Coincidentally, it was the silver-armored Knight who was initially chasing him in the town.
"Lich Gray! Stop! You... you shall not pass from here!" The silver-armored Knight, still trembling while speaking.
Gray pulled the reins, circling on the spot, looking at him. The entire Silver Moon Knight Order silently watched the suddenly appeared cavalry team.
Drawing the sword from his waist, the silver-armored Knight roared, "Today, unless you take off your helmet, and prove to me you are not a Lich, and prove you stand on the side of justice, I will kill you in the name of the Holy Spirit!"
After a long silence, Gray softly asked, "Is it really that important whether I am a Lich or not?"
"Is it not important?" The silver-armored Knight roared back.
"*Isn’t the most important thing justice? Isn’t the most important thing holy faith?*" Gray questioned loudly.
"Lich’s justice is not justice! Lich’s faith is also not faith! Liches are evil! Whatever a Lich does, however just it may seem, it must be a huge conspiracy!" The silver-armored Knight answered loudly. After answering, he smiled, probably marveling at himself for saying such profound words for the first time in his life. The soldiers around him cheered.
*Gray was stunned, standing quietly, watching the silver-armored Knight in the distance.*
*Everything felt like a recurring cycle, as if returning to the starting point. The night of being pursued and panicked seemed just like yesterday.*
*In five years, he had done a lot, yet seemed like he had done nothing. He still remained a Lich being pursued.*
In that moment, though he had no heart, he felt pain.
Silence, a long silence, so long it felt like a century had passed. Gray quietly watched the silver-armored Knight opposite him.
"Take off your helmet. As long as you prove to me that you are not a Lich, I will let you pass!" the silver-armored Knight urged from across.
Gray slowly raised his hand.
"Gray! What are you doing?" the Black Cat screamed in fright.
Before anyone else could react, Gray had already reached out and removed his helmet, tossing it aside. Revealing the skull almost never seen under the sunlight.
Laughter was abruptly cut off.
In an instant, the cavalry team opposite, even the entire Silver Moon Knight Order, was stunned. The expression of the silver-armored Knight twisted at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Wind blew gently, stirring the surrounding green leaves.
Belinda and Zeda, floating in the sky, were stunned, as was the distant Lich Council.
Ignoring everyone’s shock, the soul flames in Gray’s eye sockets burned brightly. He softly asked, "Alright, I have proven that I am a Lich. I will no longer evade it. What do you intend to do to me?"
