Chapter 193: Chapter 16: Black Dragon City (3)_2

"Yeah, I think so too," the other Liches cheered, and the Lich Council quickly passed a new resolution, moving to Black Dragon City.

Amidst the cheers, the desperate Morca fainted with a thud, his forehead hitting the table, and he was motionless.

"Wow! He fainted again! Quick, quick, quick! Rescue him!"

"Let me—! Try my new medicine! It will surely work this time!"

...

Just as Morca felt worse than death and each day was as long as a year, Gray and Cedric V were still at a stalemate.

The north wind blew softly.

In March, Black Dragon City was still very cold, and it would occasionally snow and rain, making it damp. The entire world seemed to be wrapped in a chilling cold air. Of course, this was almost imperceptible to the Undead Knights of the Silver Moon Knight Order and the thick-skinned dwarves. As for Jones, Dora, and Andrew, they were left at Church Court Mountain.

Gray was arranged to stay in Cedric V’s manor. It was not a big manor, but it was more than enough to quarter the Silver Moon Knight Order.

Most people were idle, except for Vivian and Carl, who had received their missions.

"We must prepare for the worst. If the other side decides to act against us, we must have a safe escape route. So, Carl, you’re responsible for scouting Black Dragon City’s defenses."

"Yes!"

"Vivian, try to find out as much as you can about the Dragon Clan. If Cedric V decides to make a move, he’s likely to use the power of the Dragon Clan."

"Okay. But I have to remind you, our problem now isn’t the Dragon Clan, it’s that agreement you made with the Holy Spirit. If that agreement doesn’t take effect, with the Demon Lord’s power, we’re not afraid of the Dragon Clan at all. If it does take effect, we’ll face Heaven’s crusade and lose the Demon Lord’s power. By then, even without the Dragon Clan’s involvement, we will still be..."

"I understand," Gray nodded.

"But I don’t quite understand," Vivian said, "If you knew all along what Cedric V wanted and knew you wouldn’t give it to him, why did you still come?"

Gray stood quietly, silent for a long time before he softly said, "Because I can no longer avoid it. I came for a result, no matter whether it is good or bad."

This was a very conflicted decision.

Gray firmly believed in his own faith, but the world’s faith was twisted. Once his identity was exposed, it would be the end for the Lich Knight. Gray might survive, but the story of the Lich Knight would end, and everything he had done before would turn to dust.

*Should I twist my faith to accommodate others’ beliefs, or should I hold on to my faith and face destruction?*

As usual, Gray went to the chapel for prayer before the Sabbath, looking at the statues and asking his questions. But there were no answers. It was silent, as if the Holy Spirit had never existed.

He even sought a bit of enlightenment from the Demon Lord.

The Demon Lord responded, "I won’t give you any advice, that’s our agreement. You do what you want to do, and I will support you until the moment I believe I shouldn’t support you. If you are truly a saint, you should have already known your answer."

"Do I?"

"Don’t you? If you don’t, why are you in Black Dragon City? Why didn’t you ask for my opinion before leaving, but only after you arrived and even had the meeting?"

Gray didn’t answer.

All the sounds around him seemed to fall into silence, just like the cold northern weather.

In Black Dragon City, Gray’s life became as simple as that of an ordinary priest. He did only three things every day.

He went to the small chapel next to the manor to pray. The priests there were amazed why such a distinguished Holy Knight would prefer the small chapel rather than go to the cathedral where Bishop Gustav resided.

In the manor, he repeatedly read the "Bible." Even though over the years, he had long been able to recite it backward, holding a book was just a ritual.

Leaving the manor, he went to the nearby slum to comfort the ragged, starving civilians. He prayed for them, did what he could do for them, or gave them some money.

In fact, Gray was not wealthy. Although he held a high position for so many years, he never pursued wealth or private interest. Even the taxes in his own territory were reduced to the bare minimum. After paying Shelley and Richie’s living expenses and the maintenance costs of Salted Fish Port Castle, there was little left. Luckily his military expenses were very low, otherwise, he would have gone bankrupt long ago.

The hundred or so gold coins he had were given to him last year by Camilla, who discovered he was penniless.

"Gray, have you thought about what will happen when your identity is revealed? These people will become your enemies," Black Cat asked.

Looking at the civilians happy with the flour he gave them, Gray remained silent for a long time before softly saying, "I believe in justice and holiness. It is my own affair, unrelated to them. I’m just doing what I think is right. As for how they will treat me, that’s their business."

Day by day, the soldiers guarding the manor were replaced one after another. Gray’s simple life was so simple it seemed like he had always lived there, so calm it was as if he had forgotten about the looming crisis.

However, during this time, public opinion in Black Dragon City began to change qualitatively from what was originally one-sided against Gray.

"Oh my god, such a good Holy Knight, and someone doubts he is a Lich? Have you ever seen such a Lich? Going to the chapel every week to pray, giving flour to the poor whenever he can? I even saw him sending people to build an orphanage yesterday."

"Maybe he’s just masking his true self, trying to deceive us?"

"Even if he is deceiving, I’d still support him! Listen, don’t you dare say anything bad about him in front of me, or I’ll turn my back on you!"

"Unless the Holy Knight takes off his helmet in front of me and proves himself a Lich, I won’t believe it!"

"If this kind of Holy Knight is a Lich, then give me a dozen Liches! The more the better!"

"Really?" Simon, a Lich, peeked his head out from the side, still wrapped head to toe in a variety of cloths.

"Who is this? Why is he dressed like this?" All eyes turned to Simon.

"Uh..." Simon scratched his head and said, "I’m just a passerby, a curious human. I just want to ask, you said it’s okay if Holy Knight Gray is a Lich, are you serious?"

"Of course it’s true, even if he is a Lich, I will still support him!" The chubby guy who spoke before declared emphatically.

"Yes! We support him!" The others echoed, "He hasn’t done anything wrong, so why should we oppose him?"

"Okay, thank you!" Simon turned and started running back, skipping and hopping, seemingly overjoyed.

"What the heck? Is this guy crazy?" The passersby behind him were chattering.

...

"Good news! There’s good news!" Simon burst into the room packed with Liches and announced loudly, "The wind has changed! Even if Gray is a Lich, they will still support him! Really, I heard it with my own ears! Asked many people!"

"Great! A happy ending! A happy ending! Hahaha, I love a happy ending!" A group of Liches cheered joyfully, "When his identity is revealed, I’ll bring the whole set of books for his signature!"

The only one with deep, sunken eyes holding a pen, Morca, looked like a dead man. He asked quietly, "Are you sure they will support Gray even if he is a Lich?"

"Of course, I heard it with my own ears!" Simon replied confidently.

"But... what if... I mean, what if," Morca asked cautiously, "What if they change their minds? I’ve seen this happen quite often, like in Lion King City. The public is blind and sometimes doesn’t even know what they are doing."

"They’d better keep their word, or else..." Bruto slammed his palm on the table with a "smack," gritting his teeth, "We’ll cut down those untrustworthy bastards! In the name of justice!"

"Yes! In the name of justice!" The other Liches echoed.

"Alright, whatever you say is right," Morca shivered slightly, forced a helpless smile, a bitter one.
