Chapter 106: Chapter 36: Black and White (3) (Major Chapter)
The doors made of seven-colored glass slowly opened under the push of two Silver Moon Knights.
The noise from outside the cathedral surged in like a sudden gust of wind, instantly filling the entire hall.
Gray looked around; the members of the White City team were still scattered in the surroundings.
After a brief silence, Shelley stood up, walked step by step to Gray’s side, and took his hand.
"Whatever happens, I’m willing to face it with you."
"Thank you."
Yilin let out a helpless sigh, then walked over as well and stood beside Gray.
Soon after, the others followed. This included the resigned Jones and Dora, the nonchalant Pas, and the bewildered Bob.
Finally, everyone’s gaze settled on the lone figure of Count Gruglu.
Count Gruglu took a deep breath and said softly, "Is there really no other way? Couldn’t we... make amendments to the current edict? This way, at least we wouldn’t need to fully rescind it. Quietly make adjustments, not even letting them know, and that would at least reduce the voices of dissent a bit."
"Any edict comes with unforeseen consequences; amendments require time. None of us know what the right move would be. If we’re wrong, we wouldn’t even have the chance to make amends. The safest approach right now is to restore everything to its original state. At least in that original state, we know there won’t be any major issues, and people will know how to live their lives." Yilin spoke these words.
After another pause, Count Gruglu let out a sigh and said, "Fine." Reluctantly, he walked over to Gray and stood behind him.
This was indeed the best approach for now, despite the implications for Gray’s personal reputation and the current situation.
Gray took his steps forward, moving towards the balcony one step at a time, with everyone following behind him.
As Gray appeared on the balcony, the square below—crowded with people—fell silent all at once. Everyone widened their eyes, staring up at him.
"Calling us all out here so late—Is there good news?"
"Probably. After all, it’s the Holy Knight."
"A new edict? Perhaps he’s going to divide up the noble estates now? If so, I’ll become a noble too and never need to work again. Fantastic."
"Hahaha, I just sold my land yesterday. Seems like land prices are about to drop again."
The residents murmured and debated among themselves.
Among the crowd, the author of *Guide to Knight Training* silently cheered himself on in his heart: "Bring on some bombshells! Bring on some bombshells! My novel will become a bestseller! I’ll print a million copies in one go!"
Hidden within the crowd, Benedict II shrank his head and turned to leave, but Andrew, cloaked and standing nearby, grabbed him by the arm.
"Where do you think you’re going?"
"What if... What if he notices me? What then?"
"As king, how scared of dying can you be? If you keep acting like a coward, I’ll leave immediately. You can fend for yourself!"
"No... Please don’t leave, I beg you." Benedict II could only grit his teeth and return, bowing his head and keeping his gaze away from Gray. Beads of sweat covered his forehead.
What he didn’t realize was that everyone else had their heads raised while his alone was lowered, making him stand out even more.
The entire square was eerily quiet, with only faint sounds here and there. Everyone was silently waiting for Gray, full of anticipation.
Gray remained silent, his gaze sweeping across the ocean-like crowd below. Silent.
...
The otherworldly realm.
Catherine flapped her wings and landed on a stretch of clouds.
The massive, open-air expanse of clouds formed uneven, undulating "tables." On these "tables" were countless jars and bottles, while drifting clouds served as "cabinets."
Three angels were busy in the middle of it all.
Catherine hurried over to one of the angels and handed over an empty bottle in her hand. "Could you please check what this bottle contains? It’s urgent."
The angel paused briefly before reaching out to take the bottle. With a wave of their hand over the bottle’s mouth, they lightly sniffed it. "An elven potion? What kind of elven potion?"
"I don’t know. It was brought back from the humans’ realm. Please take a look."
"Alright, but it’ll take a moment." The angel replied.
"Thank you."
...
After a long while, Gray finally took a step forward and placed his hands on the balcony railing, saying, "I’m sorry to have called you all here so late, but I have something important to announce."
His voice, amplified by magic, reached every ear in the square, ensuring that everyone heard him clearly.
"It’s alright. As long as it’s good news, I don’t mind standing here all night! Hahaha."
"Will we get paid a little extra this month?"
"I want a new ceremonial outfit, but it’s so expensive. Could the Holy Knight decree that formal wear shouldn’t be sold at such high prices?"
"Will there be wives handed out to bachelors?"
Voices scattered through the square, murmurs and whispers.
The Black Cat muttered softly, "It’d be best not to mention the grain crisis. Look at these people. If they find out about the grain crisis and start hoarding food, things will only get worse. It’ll lead to immediate chaos. Honestly, when you visit other nations to negotiate for food later, I think you shouldn’t let them know about it either."
Gray paused briefly before continuing, "Based on what we’ve already observed... I have decided to rescind the previously issued edict."
In an instant, the entire square fell completely silent. Even the faint murmuring ceased, leaving only the sound of wind and the crackling of torches.
Every single person widened their eyes in shock, staring up at Gray. This included Benedict II and Andrew, as well as the *Guide to Knight Training* author who had been bursting with excitement just moments ago.
