Chapter 982: Chapter 982: To Beidu (4)
Old Shu has been consuming the Lingzhi sent by the Ruan Family for the past two years, and his health has improved tremendously. This year, he doesn’t even need his cane anymore, and his once-grey hair is gradually turning black again. He looked incredibly energetic.
Jiaojiao ran over like a whirlwind, throwing herself into his arms. Tilting her head back, she started to sweetly dote on him with no end to her sugary words: "Grandpa, Jiaojiao missed you so much."
"Oh my, Grandpa’s little sweetheart! Grandpa missed you to death too!" Old Shu caught the little girl rushing into his arms. Hearing her words, his heart felt like it was soaking in honey, utterly delighted.
"Jiaojiao, you can’t do that. What if you accidentally hurt Grandpa?" Ruanlin Family’s matriarch softly admonished her from behind.
"Grandma, it’s fine, it’s fine. I just love Jiaojiao like this," Old Shu quickly replied. His gaze shifted to Shu Jiao, noticing that his daughter’s complexion looked great, and his eyes glimmered with satisfaction.
"Dad." Ruan Jianguo greeted.
"Grandpa." Ruan Jie followed.
Upon hearing their voices, Old Shu glanced at them one by one. His formerly relaxed expression tightened slightly, but he managed to maintain a smile, nodding as he said, "Since everyone’s here, let’s head back first. Come, Jiaojiao, sit with Grandpa. Dear in-laws, do come aboard as well. This car is spacious and comfortable." Saying that, he led Jiaojiao onto the car first, followed by Ruanlin Family’s matriarch.
Apart from the driver, the car could fit four more people. Before anyone else could react, Xiu Xi swiftly climbed aboard and took his seat.
Seeing how efficient his movements were, Ruan Jianguo blinked in surprise. For the first time, he felt this kid had some use—at least he was stepping up to share some burdens.
Shu Jiao took Ruan Jie and Ruan Jianguo to the car behind. The rest gradually boarded in turn, and the five cars drove away magnificently from the train station.
Standing in the chilly wind and shivering, Xu Miao stared enviously at the Ruan Family as they boarded the luxurious convoy. Her eyes reddened with jealousy as she fiddled with her fingers and turned to the woman beside her, asking, "Mom, didn’t you say the Xin Family was rich too? Why didn’t they send anyone to pick us up?"
"Stop spouting nonsense," the woman frowned. They were heading there as domestic helpers—why would anyone from the family send a car to pick up servants?
She had witnessed the overwhelming scene of the Ruan Family being picked up as well, but unlike Xu Miao, she understood that a family like that was entirely beyond their reach. She didn’t even dare to harbor any envy, let alone entertain fanciful thoughts about them.
The only thing she felt fortunate about was that she hadn’t offended the Ruan Family during the train ride because she couldn’t begin to imagine what the consequences might have been.
Remembering something, she turned to Xu Miao and instructed, "Be sharp once we’re at the Xin Family’s place, got it?"
Xu Miao pursed her lips reluctantly, scuffing the ground with her foot. "Mom, are we really going there to be maids? That Xin Family girl is supposed to be a fool, and we’re going to take care of a fool..."
Thinking about this, Xu Miao grew uncomfortable. At first, she saw herself as no different from Ruan Jie, but now that she was going to serve a fool, it meant she was worlds apart from Ruan Jie—like heaven and earth. This realization made her very upset.
What mother doesn’t understand her own daughter?
Hearing this, the woman reached out and poked Xu Miao’s forehead. "Stop making trouble for me! Do what you’re told at the Xin Family’s for two years, behave yourself, and maybe you’ll marry well in Beidu. Don’t waste your time dreaming about other things."
Xu Miao pouted, uncertain whether her mother’s words registered with her as her gaze continued to follow the Ruan Family’s convoy.
