Chapter 352: 351. He Fell First, She Fell Harder (1)
"Speak of the devil." I muttered as I heard Silas’s voice and I looked at Lyall who bowed and left the room.
"Reina? Are you there?" Silas asked.
"I’m here, Uncle." I responded trying not to let my exhaustion show in my voice.
"Where have you been? I’ve been trying to reach you since evening!" He started and I sighed.
"I was at the palace to check on Prince Eric and Brother Rune."
He was silent for a moment before he asked, "How are they?"
"Handsome would be the right word to be honest." I spoke and heard a low snort from the other side.
"I assume they’re well enough then and following your plan perfectly."
I smiled, "Yes."
"When were you going to report back to me anyways? I’ve been waiting to hear back from you. Do you know how worried we were?!..."
I shook my head as he started scolding and then I smirked.
"I’m fine here, Uncle and so is everyone else. How is Aunt Alys?" I asked and his scolding momentarily paused.
"Sh-She’s fine, don’t change the subject."
I chuckled, "I’m not changing the subject, Uncle I was genuinely wondering how soon-to-be my Aunt was. Are you taking good care of her? I hope she’s not mad at you again." I teased him.
"Reina." He spoke in a warning tone and I covered my mouth to stifle my laughter.
"Are you having fun teasing your Uncle?" Silas asked and I burst out laughing this time.
The love story between Silas and Alys was completely unexpected though. I had thought that maybe I could use Silas’ and the Mage’s Tower’s influence to protect Alys when she would be exposed to the world in the future but I didn’t really expect it to turn out in this way.
Their love story was pretty fun to see, Silas the first one to fall, despite him having the thought process that said that he would never get married or settle down. He was pretty quickly to fall in that sense.
It was adorable.
Around two years ago, I went to the Mage’s Tower on a surprise visit but Silas wasn’t there. Even though I didn’t find, Silas there I found several books on how to woo the person of opposite sex lining up his bookshelf and shockingly, also some romantic novels. He had gathered the books to understand the psyche of intelligent young children when he and I met for the first time to understand and get close to me.
He was doing the same thing here but I was curious to know which woman had got to his heart that he was finally breaking his rule of singlehood and going behind her.
I asked Ruya what was Silas up to these days and she told me some interesting things.
Silas would often skip meals (now that seemed a usual thing), he would be sleep deprived (again, a usual thing), but then she said that he would often sit and then zone out. It didn’t seem like a strange thing until she added that there was a small, almost dreamy-looking smile on his face. He wouldn’t respond unless you called for him at least three times, he wouldn’t listen and he would mostly find reasons to visit the lair.
On the normal basis, his visits to the lair was only every two or three months but now he was visiting the lair for at least once or twice every week and whenever he would return he would be a flustering mess or would be mumbling things.
After hearing all this I was curious, I wanted to see my Uncle in his lovesick state. So, I left the Tower and rushed over to my lair right on time to see my Uncle leaving with a small dreamy smile on his face and his cheeks as pink as his hair.
"Good day, Uncle." I greeted him and he almost jumped as he saw me land right in front of him.
"Re-Reina?" He almost stuttered and I smirked.
"Are you here for some work?" He asked peeking a glance at the entrance of the lair and I smiled.
"No, I actually went to the Tower to check on you and Ruya told me you were here." I said and observed as his face was still quite pink.
"I was worried you might be overworking yourself again and I guess it’s true." I said as I leaned in.
"You have been inspecting the lair frequently these days and look even your face is all red. You don’t have to overwork yourself so much, Uncle." I said as I reached out and placed my hand on his shoulder making him sigh.
"I’m not overworking myself, I’m fine. You should look after yourself, Reina. You’ve been juggling work between Oasis and your new territory Sylvanreach. Are you eating and resting well?"
"I am, Uncle. I have people to work for and take care of me but you on the other hand," I sighed, "with your loner tendencies it makes me worry that you might collapse again."
"What do you mean loner tendencies? Even I have people around me."
"Really? Do you even let them anywhere around you?" I asked crossing my arms at my chest and he sighed.
"Reina, you came to check on me, you saw me. I’m fine, now you can be free of worries." He said and I hummed before I side stepped him.
"Well, I can’t be free of worries if it is regarding you, Uncle. Since you also worry about me all the time." I said as I started walking towards the entrance of the lair.
"Wh-Why are you going in there?"
"Why not? It’s my lair." I threw a smile over my shoulder at him and he sighed before he turned and started walking behind me.
"You don’t usually come by for a visit, then why now?" Silas asked.
"I guess the same is with you, Uncle. You also come here once every two or three months for inspection then why are you visiting this place frequently?"
Silas halted for a moment before he started walking again.
"Y-You gave me the responsibility of looking after this place and I also had to make sure that the Princess was doing her work properly."
"It’s been more than one year that she’s here, Uncle. I’m sure she has learned how to deal with her mana and the research." I pointed out and he cleared his throat.
We made our way over to the lair where I felt the presences working and I spotted Master Darren there. He smiled as soon as he saw me.
"Baron Ocean! It’s been so long." He grinned and I smiled back.
"It is indeed a long time, Darren." I spoke and he chuckled.
"Ah, how come you’ve returned Archmage? Did you forget something again?" Darren asked and I glanced over at Silas who avoided my eyes.
"I saw him coming so, I am accompanying him." He answered.
"I didn’t ask you to, though." I spoke making him shoot me a glare.
This was fun.
Just then there was a minor explosion which made the walls of the cave tremble and Silas’ eyes widened.
"What the- Why is there an explosion again?!" He demanded and I tilted my head.
If anything were to happen to the lair then I would be the first to know but I guess this wasn’t anything bad.
"Don’t worry, everything is fine," Darren assured.
"Our Scholar Alys is just creating some devices, she usually caused such explosions but there is nothing to worry about because she knows how to control the impact." Darren explained looking at me.
"I’ve told her to not experiment here with those devices! She will end up taking this whole lair down with you all." Silas fumed and I cocked a brow at him.
Just then Alys came up from the other side wiping the black soot from her cheek. Her eyes brightened up as she saw me and she rushed over to me quickly.
"Master!" She almost threw her arms around me but then Silas cleared his throat.
"Ah, Archmage what might you be doing back here, again?!" She asked with a sugary sweet smile that would make someone have diabetes.
"Me aside, I don’t think you should be around here for a long time, Scholar Alys. You might be the one who would destroy this lair and risk the lives of all the mages here on your own because of your dangerous and needless experiments."
"I make sure to keep the safety barrier up, Archmage so, I’m sure my experiments won’t bring the lair down." Alys retorted.
"Your weak barrier is of no use in front of the destruction that you cause!"
"I’m not that incompetent, Archmage. Besides, the other mages here cause even more destruction!"
I watched as the two started arguing and I looked at Darren who sighed.
I stepped a bit away from the fighting duo and closer to Darren.
"Don’t tell me they’re always like this." I whispered to him.
"Unfortunately, yes, Master. Ever since Alys was promoted to the position of Scholar because of her research, Archmage had been coming here for inspection frequently and since Scholar Alys is... well, as you saw, she conducts such experiments, Archmage Silas starts scolding her." He explained and I hummed as I looked at them.
So, this was their trope. Enemies to lovers, huh. But then again, our boy has already fallen head over heels if I’m not wrong.
"This looks quite fun though."
