Chapter 334: 333. Shifting Tides (1)
After a month of sending Alys to the Mage’s Tower, I received a letter from her. She was finally being dispatched to the lair.
Silas had got her in and it wasn’t only because of my word but also because of her own potential.
The Golden Serpent’s assassins kept lurking around my town and I had told my people to let them be. She should get the news that Alys wasn’t in Oasis anymore. The bird that she was trying to hunt had long left the cage.
The news from the battlefield was steady and as expected Rune and Eric were holding up well. And apart from my boys I also got intel on how Davian was doing. He seemed to be doing better than Eric and Rune in cases of battle. His aura power was starting to become famous and having its own ballads.
I was impressed when I heard that he and his army defeated the army thrice their size because of his leadership. He was starting to grow to his full potential with time, Grand Duke and Grand Duchess might be very proud of their son.
Carlos, on the other hand was doing just as I had expected. He would rarely show up for any physical battle and most of his battles would be led by the Captain of the Royal Knights who was sent to be his escort and bodyguard.
I had burned the fake record that was being sent to the masses about how Prince Carlos was single handedly leading the Royal Knights and have the real report through my newspapers.
I felt the slight peck over my finger and I saw Nox who was pecking at my fingers from where he stood on the desk. He had grown a bit bigger in the past one month, his feathers were more pronounced and his beak was also a tad bit bigger.
I brushed my fingers against his head and jaw making it lean into my touch. He was also starting to absorb more of my mana energy.
In this past month I hadn’t received any task so, I was doing my own work of spreading the influence of Prince Eric throughout the kingdom. But what I wasn’t expecting was Davian’s praises that were being sung all over already.
I was glad that my newspapers were supporting the truth but I guess the future Grand Duke was gaining more popularity that my chosen male lead for this game.
Anyways, everything was going as planned so, I wasn’t quite bothered.
There were three assistants that Roan shortlisted to train among the recommendations sent by my vassals. A young man named Julio Johannsen son of the Earl from Albagard, Lord Oberon’s territory, another young man named Blake Blossom from Zach’s territory and finally the girl named Esme Magnolia from Lord Hawke’s territory.
All three of them were good in one way or another and had their own perks and their own assets.
And just as I had told Roan, he was the one who would train them and look after them on his own. The profit was that I had a lot of free time on my plate now that there were more people to look after my work.
Thanks to that, I had conducted my visit to the territory which was assigned to me and also had a list of problems that needed to be sorted.
But each of the three candidates had their assignment, Roan would supervise them and I would only step in at the very end of there wasn’t any huge problem that they couldn’t handle.
I was just sitting peacefully at Eldarf manor, in front of the chess board with the chess pieces in their place and with Nox demanding my attention.
The kids were playing around with Kai and even the Dark Elves who had come up here were having their share of fun. The Dwarves had their workshop started and the kids were able to know more about the craft of smithing.
In a couple of years if not months I would have the group who would not only know how to fight but also forge the weapons.
All in all, everything was going so smoothly that I was starting to feel lazy.
And maybe I jinxed myself when I thought that because right in that moment, a guard from my mansion arrived looking for me.
"What’s the matter?" I asked.
"There’s a news from Oasis, Master. Miss Rose has requested you to come quickly." He said and I frowned.
"Why?"
"The message mentioned something about some high profile client." He spoke and I sighed.
I stood up from my comfy chair and stretched my body, I then faced Lyall and the kids who were looking at me.
"Are you leaving already, Master?"
"I have to," I said and then looked at Kai.
"You can stay here for a while," I told him and then placed Nox in his hands.
"Take care of him," I said and ruffled his hair before I looked at Asher.
"Escort him back when he is done here," I told him and he nodded.
Lyall shot him a glare as he didn’t respond to me properly and I gestured for him to come along.
We stepped out of Eldarf manor into the setting sun and walked past the barrier before I activated the teleportation device and we reached in the alley near the town.
We walked the rest of the way till the bookstore and were greeted by the helper who was looking after the store.
I nodded at him before I went up the stairs followed by Lyall and went past the bookshelf towards the secret stairs that led down to my office.
The presence that I sensed when I entered the office wasn’t the one I had been expecting at all. I stood there for a moment making Lyall look at me questioningly and I sighed stepping inside.
Why was he here? And of all the people he had come himself, was he suspecting me or something? Or did he find out that I had his brother’s daughter?
I faced Rose who stood with a tray of tea and refreshments and she gestured towards the couch where our client sat.
I walked over and stood in front of the table facing the client. He lifted his head and through his hood I could see the bright red pupils that met my gaze and I sat down on my knee.
"I welcome Your Majesty to my humble establishment." I spoke pushing down the sense of hostility that my blood was feeling.
The man sighed and pushed back his hood revealing his bright blonde hair looking at me with his full face exposed.
"I have been waiting for your Marquis Ryujin." He said.
"I apologise for making you wait, Your Majesty. I would have been here myself if I had known you were going to grace us with your presence." I could feel the sarcasm dripping from my own voice but I guess he couldn’t.
"It’s all right, come and have a seat." He said gesturing towards the couch in front of him and I straightened up taking my seat.
"How can I assist you, Your Majesty?" I asked.
He looked once at Rose who had stood back after resting the tea and refreshments and I gestured her to leave.
After Rose left, Roger leaned ahead.
"I have a request for you," he said.
"I’ll do all in my power to fulfill your request, Your Majesty." I said placing my hand over my chest.
Roger eyed me as if trying to assess my loyalty before he spoke up.
"A... A girl was probably living here in Oasis some time ago..." He started and it rang a bell in an instant.
He knew Alys was here.
"I suppose you might know because... I have heard rumors that there’s nothing that you don’t know about what happens in your town or in this kingdom for the matter." He said.
"Who might this girl be, Your Majesty? If I knew more about her I’d give you more information."
Roger sighed, "... Her name is Alys... She’s the daughter of... the deceased Prince Soros... My brother."
I was surprised to see him admitting that and I let it show on my masked face.
"I had heard from my sources that she was hiding here till a couple of days ago... But then she... disappeared. Do you have any idea of where she went?" He asked.
I could see the tenderness and worry in his eyes for her. Roger still had a soft spot for his real family and I guess that was what made me have a little faith in him. Golden Serpent was beyond hope.
"Please give me some time, Your Majesty. I’ll look for her whereabouts and let you know." I said.
Roger nodded before he warned, "I hope you know that this should be done with utmost secrecy. Nobody should know about Alys’s real identity."
"Please rest assured, Your Majesty. I shall take care of this matter myself." I said with a smile and he nodded before he rose to his feet.
I watched him leave and escorted him till the unmarked carriage which stood a couple of steps away from the bookstore and watched it ride away before I crossed my arms at my chest.
Alys had a good uncle. But too bad for her, he was incompetent in protecting her.
Still, it was time to put the next major plan into action and wait for the time to ripe.
