Chapter 312: 311. Time Of Normalcy (1)
Grandfather and Silas sat in front of me still as rocks as I was done with the explanation.
"Why didn’t you call for me if things were so bad? Why didn’t you tell me about this demon?" Silas demanded and I leaned ahead, placing my arms on my thighs as I entwined my fingers.
"Because it was beyond you," I said, "I was capable of defeating that demon but I miscalculated and it almost cost my life."
"I would have at least bought you some time!" Silas thundered.
"You are useless against a demon," Marquis snapped and Silas scowled at him.
"She almost died!"
"She’s a Dragon!" Grandfather raised his voice, "Humans were never the beings who could stand against the demons. It was her fight."
"Didn’t you hear what she said? She said she was almost taken over by that demon!"
"Yet, she managed to come back on her own."
"She was helped by an unknown-"
"She is back!" Grandfather thundered rendering Silas’s argument.
Silas glared at his father, who, in turn, looked at the table before he asked, "What are you going to do from here?"
I was taken aback by how he changed the subject, and it took me almost a moment to process.
"I haven’t planned on moving from here anytime soon, the business here requires my attention and I also have to look after Kai so, apart from messing with the Golden Serpent, I’m not doing much."
Silas stared at me while Grandfather nodded, "If you have any other work then don’t hesitate to reach out."
I nodded slowly, my eyes drifting over to Silas. Grandfather stood up to leave and Silas stayed seated.
"Come along, Silas." Grandfather said.
"I have some more things to discuss with her," Silas replied as he stayed in his place.
"She has better things to do than answer your questions, get up and come with me." Grandfather ordered.
Silas whipped his head and scowled at him, Grandfather looked back.
"I’m not going anywhere until I’ve talked to her."
"You don’t have any right to speak in her plans if you don’t have the power to stop her." Grandfather thundered making Silas shudder and my eyes grew wide.
I stared at the old man before Silas stood up. After a brief glance at me, the two left.
I slumped, letting out a groan as I held my head in my hands. I had no idea what Grandfather was thinking, he seemed angry but he was also on my side. I knew even he was worried about me but there was still quite a lot of difference between our powers. I was going to evolve into a true dragon, and my power would only continue to grow in the future, while they would stay as humans. The contrast between us was undeniable, and my ascent was just beginning.
Besides, I wasn’t used to someone worrying about me, I was used to taking risks but I didn’t have anyone nagging about it. Even my previous job had ended with me losing my life during a mission.
After a while, I left the parlor and walked up the stairs to go to my office. Remi and Roan were already there.
The greeted me as soon as I entered and I walked over and slumped over my chair.
"What’s wrong?" Roan asked.
"How would you feel if someone close to you risked their life?" I asked and looked at both Roan and Remi.
Roan frowned and Remi tilted his head, they exchanged a look.
"I’ll be worried and try my best to protect them." Remi answered first and I then looked at Roan.
"I’ll pull their ears out and then take care of the matters myself." Roan answered and I sighed.
Not the kind of answers that could help me but I guess they too had the people they wanted to protect.
"Where’s Da-Duke?" I asked.
"His Grace is in the guest room, Master. " Remi answered and I sighed before I stood up.
"Where are you going now?" Roan asked.
"He came here for me, I can’t let him stay cooped up in his room."
Roan eyed me for a moment before he sighed, "Why don’t you, the Duke and Young Master have a little picnic in the garden, it’s quite a good day outside?"
"We just came from outside."
Roan shrugged, "I figured you’d like to spend some time as a family."
I looked at him and then at Remi who was giving us a curious look.
"I’ll go ask," I said as I shoved my hands into the pockets of my trousers before I walked out of my office.
I walked up to the guest room on the second floor and while walking I felt Kai’s presence in the same room as my father.
"So, that’s why she likes playing the game of chess." I heard Dad say before I knocked on the door.
"It’s me." I said, "May I come in?"
The doors opened and Dad greeted me with a smile, I walked in and found Kai standing near an armchair with a game of chess sitting on the table between the two chairs.
"Erm... You didn’t tell him about yourself?" Dad asked and I looked at him.
"What?"
He gave me a sheepish look before I looked at Kai whose face was red and he was holding the edges of his tucked in shirt while looking down.
"We-We were talking," Dad said, "He asked me about you... And I ended up telling him that you’re... ahem..." He cleared his throat and I sighed.
"It’s fine," I said, I was planning on keeping it for the time being because I didn’t know what he would think of he found out that I was a child in disguise of an adult.
"Kai," I spoke and the boy flinched looking up at me.
"I-I... only wanted to know more about what Master likes..." He spoke and I smiled before I reached up and removed my sapphire earstud reverting back to Reina’s form.
The egg almost dropped because of the sudden body change but I caught it and held it in my hand while I looked at Kai.
He stared back at me with wide eyes, his clear, doe eyes reflected my form. The long silver hair with the faint traces of blue and the inhumanly beautiful blue eyes.
I curtsied before him making him flinch again, "It’s nice to formally introduce myself, Kai. I’m Reina Aurelius, daughter of Duke Arthur Aurelius."
I introduced myself and then straightened up with a smile, Kai kept staring at me as his cheeks became red.
"Kai?" I called and he gasped as if getting of his trance and his face turned even redder if that was possible.
"I-I-I’m Kai N-Nereus Ryujin." He stuttered and I smiled finding it cute.
"I know, I’m the one who gave you that name."
Dad looked in between us before asking, "He has a middle name?"
"Yes," I said and felt Kai’s unmoving gaze on me.
"He’s like your grandson." I said and Dad’s eyes widened.
"I-I’d prefer if you called him my third son." He said and I laughed before I looked at Kai.
"You can call him grandfather." I said jokingly pointing at Dad.
"What? No, call me Uncle or Father if you want!" Dad quickly said and I laughed more.
Kai stared at us and when I looked at him, he averted his eyes. He was still unfamiliar with the notion of family so, I guess I would have to first introduce the good things to him before letting him learn about building his strength.
"Ah, besides, I was wondering if you two would like to go out in garden and we could have our little picnic." I said and the two looked at me.
"A picnic?" Dad asked.
"Yes, we could have some snacks and tea." I said and after a couple of minutes we were heading towards the garden.
I was back in my Ocean’s form since I couldn’t go around like Reina in this place. The egg was back in my vest. On my way, I spotted Kate who was running errands so, I decided to take her as well.
"Kate, tell your father to bring us some tea and snacks in the garden."
"Yes, Master." She beamed and then bowed before she skipped to find her Dad.
My Dad on the other hand, was watching the little girl with a questioning gaze and I answered before he could ask.
"She’s Lyall’s daughter. She wants to work that’s why she wears the maid’s outfit and runs errands and does the minor jobs." I explained.
"But she’s so young." Dad spoke.
"She’s just a year younger than me." I said and Dad and Kai looked at me.
"She’s eleven." I clarified.
We continued walking and I could see Dad looking around at the servants who greeted us with smiles while we passed.
"Are these all assassins?" Dad asked and I hummed.
"And Mr Lyall is the strongest after you."
I nodded, "He’s quite reliable."
We got to the garden in a place where the picnic mat was already spread, it was in proper shade of a large tree as well as with the sunlight on one side. The tea and snacks were already served and Lyall and Kate waited there for us.
"Join us," I said as they started leaving and Kate and Lyall exchanged a glance.
"Kate, come here," I called her and she hesitantly removed her shoes before she walked over and sat on Kai’s other side.
"What are you waiting for Lyall?" I asked as I saw him stand in his place.
He also hesitantly removed his shoes and walked over and sat on the other side of Dad.
It was quite peaceful to spend time with the people who were close to me. A peaceful, time of normalcy that I needed.
