Chapter 244: 243. Silent Misery (2)

Silas told me that he would research about the spell and also told me to find out more about it since the name of identity of the one who casted that spell was necessary.

I couldn’t imagine the kind of nasty things the poor child had gone through. He couldn’t even utter the name of those who hurt him or tell what all things he’d endured.

This enraged me all the more and I couldn’t help but start wondering if I should really burn this whole damn place to the ground along with those bastards once I was done with my work.

I contacted Lyall after that and told him to dig as much deeper as he could into the dirty deeds of the target priests. I wanted to drag them to hell and back.

The evening was uneventful but at night I felt the movements out of my room, it was as if someone was pacing and I knew it was Asher. He seemed to be tensed about something.

I didn’t let it get to me as I drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, after getting freshened up and changing into the Temple’s robes. I was led outside of the room towards the main hall of the Temple. Asher accompanied me as a loyal knight he was, I wanted to ask him why he was so anxious the other night but then I thought I’d do it later.

I spotted the High Priest there along with a couple of other Priests.

"Welcome, Saintess," he spoke, "There was an official announcement of you becoming a part of the Temple however, there is a cleansing ritual that you must follow."

"A cleansing ritual?" I repeated and Benedict smiled benignly.

It was enough to make my skin crawl but I kept my stance still. I could feel the tension in Asher’s body oozing out as waves behind me and I didn’t even have to turn to see him glaring at Benedict.

"Yes, you must visit the Holy Place- the inner sanctum of the Temple where the Saint was originally discovered."

"I understand," I spoke politely.

"Will the Saint be accompanying me then?"

"Pardon?" Benedict frowned slightly.

The question must have caught him off guard but I wasn’t leaving the child behind.

"Yes, is the Saint coming along? I hoped we could go together," I smiled making the two familiar priests flinch slightly.

Benedict eyed me with what looked like suspicion but then he sighed.

"The Saint has some work here so, he cannot go along."

"What a shame! Then, can we postpone the cleansing ritual till the time that Saint has some free time on his hands?" I kept the smile intact.

"Pardon?" He gasped and I tilted my head slightly.

"I’m saying, let us postpone my cleansing ritual till the time that the Saint has some free time." I spoke in a tone that would seem like a command.

Benedict’s eyebrows twitched before he clenched his jaw, I wondered if he would lash out but then he inhaled deeply and then released a deep sigh.

"Father Dorrith." Benedict spoke up instead and the said pudgy man perked up.

"Yes, High Priest?"

"Please go and see if our Saint is done with his prayer, if he is then relay the Saintess’s request to him." He said and the pudgy man glanced once at me before he bowed and left.

Benedict looked at me while I stared right back with the defiance clear in my eyes.

We waited for a while and I sensed the pudgy man returning with another presence trailing behind him.

He entered the room and Benedict’s eyes shone for a moment before his face went hard as the Saint followed behind. His eyes lit up once they fell on me and he came and stood beside me while Dorrith stood behind Benedict.

"Saint..." Benedict asked, "are your prayers finished?"

"Ah... Yes." He spoke making Benedict narrow his eyes.

"Wouldn’t it be better to let the Saint pray at the holy place? That place is sacred and would make a greater effect on him, considering he was found there." I spoke making Benedict look at me with a hard stare.

He hated me and he wasn’t even trying to hide it now. Well, I wasn’t holding back on my demands so, it was an expected reaction.

"Now that the Saint is here, shall we get going?" I asked.

Benedict didn’t say anything as he started moving and I looked down at the Saint with a smile.

"Let’s go," I said presenting him my hand and he smiled before he slipped his small hand in mine.

Asher looked at us before he took started walking behind us.

The cuffs were still on the child’s ankles and even though they had affected on me when I was using the invisibility spell that one time in the market area during the parade. It wouldn’t do anything to my disguise, it might be because of the purity of the mana in the mana stones.

The stones used for making the disguise earstuds and communication device were made of high quality stones that were extracted from the Supreme Aqua Dragon’s lair. They weren’t like the mined mana stones which lacked the quality and would become useless after coming in contact with the mana cancelling objects.

I was shocked when my invisibility spell wore off during the parade. I guess the answer was the mana cancelling cuffs that the Saint was wearing at that time. The Temple was quite nasty for making the child wear those cuffs, but why? To contain his healing abilities?

We got on the carriage with the Saint, myself and the High Priest in one carriage while Asher rode on his horse beside us and the other Priests in another carriage.

"Saint," I started and the boy looked at me.

"Can you tell me about this place where we are going?"

The boy blinked and then started speaking, "Um..."

"It’s an extremely beautiful place, Saintess. You will believe that you have stepped in the paradise when you reach there." Benedict spoke up instead and I looked at him.

"I believe I asked the Saint, High Priest. I wanted to know how he liked that place not the description or the praises of that place." I told him making his eyes widen.

"Pardon me, Saintess but you are not allowed to talk to me in that tone."

"Why not? You’re a mere High Priest while I and the Saint are much higher and prominent figures in the Temple. I don’t see why I should give you any regards." I said making Benedict clenc his fists.

"You’re quite insolent, Saintess."

I chuckled, "I only give this special treatment who deserve it, High Priest."

His eyes then drifted to the Saint and the boy shivered slightly hanging his head and I squeezed his hand gently.

"Let’s get back to our talk, Saint,"

The boy looked at me and I smiled warmly at him.

"Do you like that place?"

He nodded once and I smiled, "Is it a good place?"

He nodded again.

"Were you straight away taken from that place to the Temple?" I asked and the boy nodded again.

"I see... Then you haven’t seen the town or the outside world," I summarised and his finger clutched at the fabric of his robe making me observe him.

"I’m sure there will be a day when you would see the outside world and enjoy all kinds of happiness there is,"

His fingers relaxed and he looked up at me with wide eyes, I could see hope swirling in them.

I placed my hand over his head and ruffled his hair gently, my blood hummed ever so slightly and my mana reacted to the child. I saw him close his eyes and make an expression of absolute peace. He opened his eyes and I saw his eyes shining for a split second before it glow disappeared.

Soon enough, we reached at the Holy Place. We got out of the carriage and I saw the forest in front of me.

"The ritual will be commenced in the lake," Benedict explained.

"Please be careful on the way and don’t get scared." Benedict spoke sounding almost mocking.

The lake was in the heart of the forest and the forest was said to be a place where one of the most horrific battle between the demons and the Dragons had happened. The ruins of the Temple were left alone since there was said to be a lot of dark matter gathered around and the lake was a blessing which kept the negativity from that dark matter at bay.

Dark matter was nothing but the opposite for of the mana that we used, it was the dead mana but with the negative energy that could only suck away life and make the one who came in contact with it bad things.

The gust of wind swept through me as soon as I set my foot in the forest and I felt the charged energy all around me. It was as if the forest had suddenly come alive after sensing my presence.

Well, I wouldn’t rule out that possibility since I was a Dragon who was entering this place after a very long time. The forest might as well be welcoming me.
