Chapter 227: 226. Two Sides Of The Same Coin (3)

Alan Lewinstein seemed like he was trying to see through me while I was waiting for him to start with his interrogation. The maids were sent out of the room leaving only us two with tea and snacks.

"Where do you hail from Miss Clarkson?" Alan asked.

"From the Western border of Denril, My Lord." I answered.

"Western border?" He cocked his brow and then seemed to ponder over it.

"Why is the daughter of Earl Clarkson of West in our household, if I may ask?" He asked and I smiled.

"As you might know, My Lord, there was a plague spreading at the borders." I started explaining the story about how a noble lady stepped out of her mansion to help the infected and needy people.

He listened attentively with his fingers steepled in front of his lips while his sharp eyes observed me.

"And since then, I am waiting for Sir Asher." I concluded appearing bright and innocent.

"So, you are planning to join the Temple?" He asked and I tilted my head slightly.

"Um... My father might not like it," I spoke in a hesitant tone and Alan straightened his back.

"Any noble will agree with him." He said.

I looked down, "I... don’t even know what to do at this point. I came all the way to Florian but now... even Sir Asher is not here and I can’t return home without my knight."

"So my brother brought you here and left you in this manor unattended?" Alan concluded.

"That’s not it!" I quickly said, "Everyone here is really nice and they take care of me but... I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do from here. Sir Asher told me that he would bring me to the Temple but he hasn’t returned for the past three days."

"And I even heard that there was an attack on the Saint during the parade so... I’m a bit worried."

I fiddled with my thumbs appearing to look confused and naive making Alan release a sigh.

"Why did you follow a stranger like that?" He asked.

"Sir Asher isn’t a stranger! He saved my life!"

"And how do you know that the Temple didn’t send those people to kidnap you in the first place?" He asked making me go quiet.

Well, I knew they were the mercenaries sent by the Temple since they were kidnapping me and the Templar knights appeared right on time for my rescue.

"I can understand that you were only trying to help others but be a little careful about following strangers just because they pretend to save you!" He chided.

"I... didn’t think that Sir Asher was a bad person. He was really kind to me and in all the places I went everyone were really happy when they received help from me. I didn’t pretend to help anyone, I really wanted to help them and I felt that Sir Asher also was doing the same." I spoke and Alan released an exasperated sigh.

"You who have known him for a couple of days would know him better or me who have grown up with him?" Alan asked raising his voice a little making me flinch.

"But-"

"Asher isn’t capable of handling things! You have only invited trouble by following Asher, do you understand?!"

I looked at him with wide, innocent eyes and he closed his eyes massaging his temples.

"I’m sorry," he spoke in a low voice.

My lower lip quivered and I sniffed looking down at my hands and heard him sigh again.

He would be six feet under if Enora or Lyall were around. Not even my father had raised his voice at me like this.

"Look... I’m really sorry... I didn’t mean to..."

I stole a glance at him, he had a guilty expression on his face.

"Please forgive me, Miss Clarkson."

I wiped my face and sniffed, "I-It’s fine,"

The sharpness of his eyes had dimmed and he hesitantly pushed the plate of cookies to me.

"Please eat this," he said.

I could have laughed at how adorable he looked in that moment. These brothers sure had a knack for make me want to tease them.

I picked up one of the cookies and nibbled on it as I sat quietly.

"I will arrange for your return home, Miss Clarkson." He said and I looked at him.

"Also, you don’t have to think about Asher. He’s not the kind of person that you’re thinking, it will be better for you to stay away from him." He said firmly and I fiddled with my thumbs again.

"But..."

"Don’t worry about how he will react, I will take care of it." He told me before he looked at the door.

"Just a moment," he said before he stood up and walked towards the door.

He opened the door and the household personnel of the manor came tumbling inside including the Head Maid and Head Butler. I knew they were standing at the door with their ears at the door eavesdropping on us. It was quite cute to see them like this.

"Mrs Speil and Mr Speil." Alan regarded them coldly and everyone quickly scrambled to their feet and everyone except for Mr and Mrs Speil rushed out of the room.

"Yes, Young Master?"

The two bowed politely before him with their cheeks gone red.

"Pack her belongings and bring them down right away." He ordered and the reaction that Mr and Mrs Speil had matched mine.

"What?"

"Do you want me to repeat myself?" He asked and the two exchanged a glance before they looked at me.

"Um... What do you mean, My Lord?" I asked as I got to my feet.

"I will take responsibility for your safe return so, you should come with me to the Lewinstein mansion."

"But... This is also-"

"I am doing this for your sake, Miss Clarkson." He said as he looked at me and I looked at Mr and Mrs Speil.

"But, Young Master-" Mrs Speil started.

"You are still here? Hurry up and bring her belongings. I cannot let her stay here, who knows what Asher might to this poor girl."

"Young Master Alan, we must at least inform Young Master Asher." Mr Speil spoke making him look at him sharply.

"Are you telling me that I should allow him to tarnish the Lewinstein name anymore than what he already has?" He thundered at the two making them flinch and look down at their shoes.

"Hurry and get her belongings!" He ordered once more.

"Yes, My Lord."

The two walked out while Alan stood there with his arms crossed at his chest and I walked towards the door.

"Where are you going?" He asked.

"... To get my cloak," I said and he sighed, nodding.

I went up the stairs and walked to my room where the maids and Mrs Speil were packing my luggage.

"Miss Mirielle!"

"Miss Mirielle!"

The maids quickly got to their feet and rushed over to me.

"Are you all right?"

"Oh my! Your eyes are red!"

"Did you cry?"

"Young Master shouted at you, didn’t he?!"

The two spoke and I held their hands in mine, "I... I might have to leave."

Their eyes grew teary and Mrs Speil walked up to me.

"Please forgive us, My Lady. We couldn’t..." She looked down and I shook my head.

"It’s fine, it’s not your fault."

"But we don’t want you to go!" Nina sniffed.

"Yes, we want you to stay here forever!" Lilly shouted.

My people won’t like that too much.

The two hugged me while Mrs Speil wiped her eyes quietly.

After the crying session, they placed the cloak on my shoulders and while sniffing led me downstairs where Alan was waiting.

My luggage was loaded in the carriage waiting outside and Alan stepped out gesturing me to come along.

The entire household personnel was gathered outside to see me off with tears in their eyes. Mrs Speil hugged me as we were in the doorway and handed me a white long hair pin which made my eyebrows jump as it was made of ivory with a few blue beads.

"This-"

"Keep it with you," she said with a warm smile and I looked at Mr Speil who nodded with a smile.

I took it and Nina and Lilly hugged me again while wailing and just like that I bid farewell from everyone. Alan waited patiently near the carriage before I walked up to him.

"I’m sorry for making you wait..." I said and he presented me his hand.

I took it before getting on the carriage and once again looked at everyone who were looking at me with tearful gazes.

Alan climbed in after me and closed the door before taking a seat in front of me. The carriage moved and I looked at the manor which was left behind.

"Everyone at that house seemed to have grown fond of you." He commented and I smiled.

"They are really nice and loveable people, My Lord."

Alan didn’t say anything at that and simply leaned back looking out of the window while I wondered what I should do now. Or rather, what Asher would do now.
