Chapter 1299: Chapter 1299: The Issue of Having Boys or Girls

Grand Master’s wife cleverly made a remark that greatly pleased the Prince’s consort, and seeing that she enjoyed the praise, everyone shifted their conversation towards that topic.

Not a fool sat among them; they all followed suit, congratulating the Little Prince on his first full moon and also extending their congratulations to the Prince’s consort for accepting Su Yunjin as her sworn sister.

Since Su Yunjin was pregnant and couldn’t drink alcohol, she used tea in place of wine. The Prince’s consort was also nursing the child and couldn’t drink alcohol, so she too used tea instead. Everyone raised their cups and drank together.

As they stood up, some noticed that Su Yunjin’s belly had grown and playfully asked her, "Mrs. Su, you must be close to giving birth, aren’t you?"

The child in Su Yunjin’s womb was over five months along, and she would be able to deliver in a few more months. Putting down her cup, she smiled and replied, "Next spring, this child should be born."

"Giving birth in spring is good; it’s neither too cold nor too hot, much more comfortable than in winter. In winter, it’s cold, and in summer, it’s too hot; giving birth in those two seasons is a suffering. Delivering in spring or autumn is much better." The Prince’s consort had given birth in autumn, and while praising Su Yunjin, they also managed to compliment the Prince’s consort in the process.

Among those sitting there, if one were to speak of prestigious status, the Prince’s consort would be the most esteemed. It was due to her consideration that Su Yunjin could sit among them.

Everyone valued Su Yunjin, largely because of the Prince’s consort. Were it not for her, they wouldn’t bother giving Su Yunjin, a mere country woman, a second glance.

Then someone, focusing on Su Yunjin’s belly, speculated, "Mrs. Su, your belly is so large and round, I bet the child inside is definitely a son." In ancient times, people valued sons over daughters, especially the wives of nobles and princes, who were particularly keen on boys, as girls would eventually marry out.

Only a son could secure a place at home. The Prince’s consort had just accepted Su Yunjin as her sworn sister, and these clever people knew it.

To flatter Su Yunjin now was to flatter the Prince’s consort; everyone waxed lyrical about Su Yunjin’s qualities, naturally asserting she was bound to have a son.

But Su Yunjin was not a native of ancient times through and through. In her view, whether it was a son or a daughter didn’t matter; she admired the delicate beauty of Lady Qin’s daughter.

Su Yunjin was incredibly fond of her and hoped to give birth to a daughter as adorable and fair as Lady Qin’s daughter, a little girl with tender, rosy cheeks that would be a delight to behold.

While everyone extolled her for expecting a son, one woman, scrutinizing Su Yunjin’s belly, objected, "I look at Mrs. Su’s belly and think it seems more like she’s going to have a daughter. When I carried my girl, my belly was as round and large as Mrs. Su’s. I guess Mrs. Su is more likely to have a girl."

"A son would be better! A daughter will eventually have to marry and leave, whereas a son can stay by your side. Besides, this is Mrs. Su’s first child, having a son would allow her to hold her head high in her husband’s family and bring more honor," they contended, believing that having a son was preferable.

Su Yunjin lowered her head with a chuckle, finding it amusing that these people were speculating on the gender of her unborn child based merely on the shape of her belly.

With the child within her womb, she herself didn’t know whether it was a boy or a girl; how could these people discern just by looking? The more they spoke, the more they seemed to convince themselves that Su Yunjin was carrying a girl, prompting some to sigh.

"What a pity, Mrs. Su. If the child in your belly were a boy, he could receive the promotion of both the Prince and the Princess Consort and have a boundless future. But if it’s a girl, at best, you’ll find her a decent family to marry into."
