Chapter 75: [Volume 1] Chapter 75- Five times ..

Suddenly, the door burst open, and the women from the SUVs stormed in, scanning the room. Esme held her breath, hoping they wouldn’t see her. They moved methodically, checking behind crates and machinery, their voices low but urgent.

"She couldn’t have gone far," one of them muttered, a grim smile playing on her lips. "Let’s split up."

Esme’s pulse quickened as they fanned out, each step bringing them closer to her hiding spot. She needed a distraction. She glanced around, spotting a metal rod leaning against the wall. It was a risk, but she had to try.

Quietly, she grabbed the rod and hurled it toward a stack of crates on the opposite side of the warehouse. The loud crash echoed through the space, and the women immediately turned, their attention diverted.

Today was the first time she hadn’t taken her bulletproof car, opting instead for something less conspicuous. A mistake she wouldn’t make again. What had begun as a quick trip to the airport now felt like stepping into a den of snakes, danger lurking in every corner.

"Damn it, how could I make such a mistake?"

"Over there!" one shouted, running toward the noise. Seizing the opportunity, Esme darted in the opposite direction, her heart pounding. She had to find a way out before they regrouped.

Navigating through the maze of equipment, she spotted a door leading to the back alley. Taking a deep breath, she moved toward it, adrenaline fueling her every step. She could hear the women yelling, realizing they had been tricked, and time was running out.

As she reached the door, she paused, listening intently. The sounds of their footsteps grew louder as they turned back toward her. She pushed the door open just as one of them called out and slipped through, praying it wouldn’t be her last chance.

As soon as Esme opened the door, she stepped into the quiet, dark alley, the cool night air wrapping around her like a cloak. She scanned her surroundings, her eyes turning a vivid gold as she searched for any signs of life or hidden cameras.

The shadows seemed to whisper secrets, but she felt no presence lurking nearby. Satisfied that she was alone, a smile crept across her face—one that hinted at the thrill of the hunt.

Just then, the women emerged behind her, their laughter echoing off the damp walls. "Ha! Found you! What, not running anymore?" one of them taunted, stepping forward with a cocky swagger.

Esme turned slowly, a chilling smile forming on her lips that sent a shiver through the air. "No, no more running." With that declaration, her eyes glowed with intensity as Beom appeared beside her, his presence like a dark storm rolling in.

Within moments, the alley erupted into chaos. Esme moved with precision, her body a blur as she swiftly dealt with the women. They crumpled to the ground, their unconscious forms sprawled awkwardly in the shadows.

She felt no remorse; they were pawns in a game she no longer wished to play. No need to ask who had sent them; she felt it in her gut—it was her sister, Diana.

"Looks like some bugs can’t stay calm," Esme’s eyes flashed with intensity before settling back to their usual color. They needed to be cleaned out, these pests thinking they could mess with her.

Esme glanced at her broken phone, its shattered screen glinting ominously in the dim light. She pressed a few buttons, hoping against hope that it still worked. A woman’s voice crackled through the receiver, laced with irritation. "What is it? Give me a good reason for this call, or I swear I’ll kill you."

Esme smiled, unfazed by the threat. "Come back to work before I do kill you." Her tone was playful, but beneath it lay a current of urgency that hinted at the darkness gathering around them.

...

Back to present

Esme was lying in bed, an IV drip resting gently in her hand. Ray stood beside her, worry etched on his face, while Kai entered with a warm bowl of produce, setting it on the table with care.

"Is she not awake yet?" Kai asked, glancing at Ray, who shook his head, signaling no. Their eyes remained fixed on her, filled with concern.

After her collapse, the doctors had examined her closely, revealing numerous scars that suggested she had been in a serious accident. Through their research, they discovered that the car Esme had been heading to had been blasted, riddled with bullet holes. The cameras had failed to capture any evidence of what had happened. The driver, while alive, was in critical condition, leaving many questions unanswered.

Jay returned, his expression softening as he sat on the edge of the bed and gently touched her forehead. "She doesn’t have a fever," he said, his voice a mix of relief and lingering concern.

Hearing that, the other brothers nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it looks like it’s calmed down from before," Kai added, though the tension in the room lingered.

Time passed slowly, and after four hours, Esme finally opened her eyes. Her head felt foggy, as if filled with a haze of roses. Blinking against the light, she turned to see who was nearby.

Ray was lying on the other side of the bed, his expression a mix of worry and relief. The same went for the other brothers; Jay was resting on her other side, while Kai lay beside him.

At that moment, Esme felt something strange inside her. It was the first time she had felt sick while seeing someone waking up beside her. But then, a vivid memory rushed into her mind. No, this wasn’t the first time.

She glanced at Ray, realization dawning on her. This was the fifth time something like this had happened in her life. Each instance blurred into the next, a haunting pattern she couldn’t escape. The familiarity of it both frightened and frustrated her, reminding her of all the chaos that had led her here.
