The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 79
Chapter 79: Chapter 79
Veronica exited the car leaving Liam behind to get the picnic he had prepared for them. She could spend hours looking at the water and sitting on the sand. "What a shame I was afraid of this," she said.
The beach wasn’t crowded which was good and with the few people present, Veronica would be surprised if she recognised Liam’s face or her own after she was plastered in the news a while ago.
After hearing the car door closed, Veronica turned to look at Liam.
"Do you need help?" She asked, smiling innocently since she waited late to ask.
"You say that after I already have everything out of the car. I can lift it by myself. Where do you want to sit before you get in the water?" Liam questioned, taking a good look around the beach.
"Over there," Veronica pointed to trees providing shade.
She led the way over to where they would sit, walking fast so that no one could take their spot.
"I feel like a child. I’m sure no one my age is this excited about a beach but I feel so much excitement. I wonder when the fear will come," Veronica said, concerned about that part. She knew this excitement wasn’t going to last forever so she had to enjoy it while it was here.
Liam didn’t like hearing her speak about her fear since he wasn’t fully all for this idea. He was going to sit with her here and then go to her if she needed help in the water. Luckily, he was a good swimmer.
Veronica helped Liam to spread out the blanket and then sat down. The excitement was slowly going away with a feeling she couldn’t describe replacing it. She needed a small distraction.
"They are at the beach with their dog. Must be fun. Can we get a pet or are we too busy for one?" Veronica asked, thinking of their schedules.
"We’re not too busy and there is always someone home. You want a dog?" Liam asked, looking at the same dog Veronica was watching.
"Only if you want one. It might become a little chaotic if we bring a pet into our home at first but I think it would be fun. We can get a cat too but I don’t see a cat wanting to come to the beach with us," said Veronica.
"We should get a cat. Then I will be with two scaredy cats at the beach," Liam joked. She would think twice about getting in the water if she had a cat to watch.
"Ha! It was so funny," Veronica sarcastically replied. "You didn’t tell me what happened when you went to work. Was the office sad to see you go?"
"No. I’m sure they celebrated when I left. I fired Nora today. It seems she was meeting with Beth and I believe she’s the woman Beth wanted you to think I was having an affair with. I didn’t notice Nora’s behaviour was due to the fact she liked me. She also was going to lie about harassment in the office," Liam shared.
Veronica was surprised by this. Liam only went for a short visit at work yet Nora ended up fired. Nora wasn’t having a good day. "Was she friends with Beth?"
"It was news to me that they were. Or maybe they came together for this with Nora thinking I would end up with her. I don’t understand how they think. I was in the wrong because I was too nice to her. I should have been rude so she wouldn’t have any feelings for me. She had to go," Liam said, unwilling to participate in the delusion.
"Well, Beth is certainly going far to mess with me. I think it’s Beth who has my phone. My mother bothers me for money, the same with my stepfather but Beth is different. Like she’s out to ruin what I have. I thought she just wanted to show she had my mother but she’s after more," Veronica said, wary of Beth.
What exactly did Beth want?
"Is it you?" Veronica wondered, looking at Liam. "Does she want you again? If I lose you and go to someone else would she want them? Is it an obsession with everything I have? It doesn’t make sense."
Beth had more than Veronica had when they were growing up. Veronica didn’t need her memories to know it. Why did Beth want the few things that she had?
"Nothing about Beth makes any sense. She always came off like there was something wrong with her head. Not just when I was dating you but before that. Like she was lost in her head plotting something and then it became worse with our announcement," Liam replied.
"She lost her parents. I wonder if she didn’t like that I had my mother. Must have been fun for her to see my mother love her more. Little did she know that she could gladly take my mother. What did I do in a past life to deserve being caught up in a family like that? I need a break," Veronica said and then laid down on the blanket to look up at the sky.
"Is there any news about my father?"
"None so far. I’m surprised it’s a little hard to find the name of the man she was married to before. I would like to ask you if you are sure your parents were married but you know, you’re no help," Liam joked.
"It’s strange. What’s my mother trying to hide? Is my father someone who just asks for money or is there more to the story? I’m sorry but I don’t see her marrying a man who doesn’t have any money and it’s not like she lives a quiet life to hide from anyone. Is it more like she doesn’t want to disturb him?" Veronica wondered, puzzled by her parents’ arrangement.
She continued, "Is my father some sleeping ancient beast?"
"Maybe. Your face has been in the news and your mother has been doing a lot of interviews. He knows where you are if he is alive but for some reason, he’s not coming to you. He can’t be someone who wants money or he would have been here long ago reaching out. He might be someone who has to hide and has the money to remain hidden," Liam concluded.
Liam was confident he could pull her father out of hiding. If Veronica’s father loved her regardless of having to stay away for unknown reasons he should come if he thought his daughter was in danger again.
"It’s never a dull moment with my family. At least you can’t say you’re ever bored with me. While you find my father, we need to think about how we’ll get my phone. Should I visit their home? It would have to be a day only mother will be there. I will leave it to you to think of a way to get Beth and Henry away from home," said Veronica.
"I don’t like the idea of you going there. You never went back for a good reason-"
"Well, how else are we to get the phone? Are you going to visit? We both know that is going to look suspicious. Or were you planning to break into their home without telling me? It makes the most sense for me to go to my mother and pretend like I want to be close to her again," Veronica said, standing firm on her decision.
She continued, "Even when Beth discovers that the phone is gone, she can’t do anything about it since it was my phone. That will be the time you will have to watch her because she’ll be scared knowing that you will come to ask her how it got in her hands. There isn’t another way."
"You’re hellbent on doing everything dangerous to get answers. I don’t like it," Liam had to be honest. "I won’t be all for it even if you take a few bodyguards to be outside waiting for you. If you have your mind made up already all I can do is support you. I’ll think of something to get both of them out."
’Thank you. I am done with laying around," Veronica said, sitting up to see the water again. "I’m ready to do something bold. I need you to be near to get me if something happens."
"How far out were you planning to go if I needed to save you? Just stand where the water reaches your ankles and we’ll go slow from there. Come," Liam said, getting up first to offer his hand to Veronica.
"You’re no fun but fine. Can I push you in without any consequences? You wouldn’t be evil to push someone who is afraid of the sea into it right? Or maybe if you push me in it might trigger something-"
"No," Liam stopped her in her tracks. He wasn’t going to be the one to push her anywhere. "Please be mindful of how worried I am for you right now."
