The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 64
Chapter 64: Chapter 64
"Not anymore? Nathan, I am advising you not to do anything stupid. Continue as you are now and just show up when I tell you to. Don’t go picking a fight with my father. He’ll see your death to be used as sympathy points for Benjamin. Don’t," Adeline said, hoping he was listening to her.
Nathan looked out the window and drowned out what Adeline said. He was perfectly fine without the Smiths and didn’t fear Vance. He knew quite well the kind of man Vance was and the kind of attacks he would do should his support end but Nathan wasn’t afraid.
"You are all going to send me mad one day and I believe you enjoy doing it. I would not like to see my husband and father go up against each other. You have my attention now. I am asking you to give up thinking about my father. Let’s enjoy dinner," Adeline touched his hand.
Nathan didn’t move his hand but Adeline’s touch did nothing to stop what he thought about. For how long did she think he would sit by and let her be used by her family while her brother got all the credit?
"You should be more appreciative of the fact you have a husband who wants you to relax. I’ve worked hard to have enough money to take care of you so you don’t need to be running around behind your brother. Your father must be stuck in the old days to think the women in your family must be running around serving the men," said Nathan.
Adeline touched her forehead. "Please stop talking. You don’t know what I sacrificed to come here tonight and I thought I would not regret it because I would have a lovely time with you."
"Would you rather that I don’t love you and spend time with another woman or a few? You might love getting to work covering up my tracks. Then I might get to see you as much as your brother sees you. Would you like that?" Nathan asked, aiming to hurt her.
"You’re not going to like it if you ever have another woman while we are still married. My father will be the least of your concerns. I gave you my time and attention but you still aren’t happy. Tell me honestly, do you want to keep our marriage good or do you think it is already done with?" Adeline asked as his actions now felt like the latter.
"I am not going to leave you and you’re not going to leave me. Not at this time in our lives. I know the girl who got married to me because it would help her family end up falling in love with me and I did the same. I just need you to be ready to cut ties with your family when it all goes to shit," Nathan replied.
They were using Adeline and taking all the credit.
"If you wanted, I could help you run," Nathan offered.
For Adeline, it was tempting since it was what she wanted but the danger was far too great. What Adeline wanted more than to be elected was to have her father acknowledge that she was the better choice.
Nathan was greatly mistaken since there were days when she wanted to leave Benjamin out to hang but she couldn’t.
"I don’t want to run. I just need you to support Benjamin and get your son to come home. I’m tired of seeing all the photos of him and Veronica out. There’s more," Adeline added after looking at her phone again.
Adeline couldn’t escape seeing the reports that Liam and Veronica were happily in love since they were out together at lunch and spotted somewhere together a few minutes ago. It was starting to kill the stories that their marriage was on the rocks and replacing the stories about how Veronica tried to kill herself for attention.
Adeline couldn’t allow the stories about Veronica’s accident to die down just yet. Attention-seeking was a good reason for a private man like Liam to want a divorce.
Nathan knew what Adeline was doing just from seeing the name of the person she started to chat with. Adeline made sure to stay great friends with reporters to put out good reports about her family or to tarnish anyone she didn’t like.
Now that he thought about it, Nathan didn’t think it would be good for Adeline to join the run. A woman like her shouldn’t be placed in that seat.
"Liam is going to find out and then he’s going to be on your ass," Nathan warned Adeline. "He likes me just a little bit more since I don’t trouble him."
"He hates you just as much and I did nothing wrong. Change in plans, Nathan. There is somewhere else I want to eat and it just so happens that Liam will be there. It’s been so long since we had a nice family dinner. Driver!"
Nathan shook his head. This wasn’t going to end well and was ruining the plans that he had but he did want to see Liam. "You do know that it is likely Veronica will be there with him, right? You can’t ask her to get up and leave the table so you don’t have to see her."
Adeline leaned back on her seat after telling the driver where to go. "I’ve learned to stomach her and I can do it tonight. Why is he parading her around the town already after what happened?"
"Just say that you don’t like that they are killing the rumours that their marriage is on the way out. You created a little mess with Sabrina by being so close to her at the charity event but not close to Veronica. Those little articles about it were pulled down fast. You’re not the only one with reporter friends," Nathan said, proud of Liam.
He liked seeing Liam take his resources and use them against the people bothering him even if he had to use them against his parents.
"It is not funny," Adeline said, greatly annoyed with Nathan. "You’re no help at all. You like leading him on into thinking that you’re all for Veronica. For the record, he hates you just as much as he hates me. Ungrateful little brat. We should have sent him to a school to make him more disciplined."
"No. I like him just as he is now rude and all. I’m looking forward to dinner tonight to see what those two are up to. I’m curious if the memory loss story might be true," said Nathan.
