The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 63
Chapter 63: Chapter 63
"When I said I didn’t want you on your phone at dinner, should I have been clearer that I don’t want you on your phone even to keep tabs on Liam?" Nathan asked, glancing at the newest reports of Liam.
"You should have been clear since I did as you asked. I am not working right now so be happy. You can’t keep twisting what you want because I will be even more annoyed than I already am. I’m frustrated with your son," said Adeline.
Nathan ignored the comment about his son again. "You’ve got to stop thinking I am the reason why Liam acts the way he does. I would be the same way to not go around your family. I’m tired of all the events and dinners with your brother."
"You have relatives I don’t like but I showed up. Support me on this so I don’t have to deal with my father alone. He’s already angry that I won’t be showing up to his home tonight, allowing Benjamin to drag my name through the mud. Thank you," Adeline muttered, unhappy.
"Thank you? I gave you the choice to go wherever you wanted tonight. I didn’t force you to come with me, Adeline. I recall telling you that with or without you, I would be going to dinner so, leave if you need," Nathan replied.
It was already surprising that she turned down her father to be with him tonight.
Adeline sighed, knowing she was in for a moody night. "Shouldn’t I be the emotional one? I am here with you, aren’t I? What more do you want from me?"
"Do not toss this back in my face if your father gets angry with you. I honestly want to ask. Is it them or me?" Nathan asked, partially knowing what the answer would be but she could always surprise him.
Adeline couldn’t believe he would ask this again. "You need to stop asking me these kinds of questions. I want to enjoy a peaceful dinner so would you please act smart tonight?"
"Sometimes you hesitate to tell me or you don’t answer. Your father really had a tight grip on all of you. Is that why it bothers you so much that you aren’t in control of Liam? You’re failing to be like your father?" Nathan asked.
"I am not trying to be like my father. I am trying to do what is best for my son," Adeline clarified since Nathan was forgetful.
Nathan laughed at Adeline not seeing what was obvious. "I’ve heard the whole doing what is best for my son story before but it has turned to doing what’s best for the family. I think I’ve told you enough time that I don’t want Liam to get involved in politics. He’s good right where he is."
"I don’t understand," Adeline turned to face Nathan. "Did you bring me here to argue with me? I thought you wanted to put our marriage back on the right track but you’re asking all these questions and bringing up things you know I don’t want to hear about."
"Our marriage won’t ever be on track if we don’t address what you’re trying to do with Liam. He’s a Sterling so he’ll have his hands busy in our business. He doesn’t have time for politics and with all the times your brother has screwed up, we should cut him loose before he drags us all down," said Nathan.
"You know that I can’t do that. I keep Benjamin looking perfect all the time so as long as we all play our role in this, nothing will happen. You’ll be benefiting from this so please, don’t act like you hate it so much. Liam has given enough of his time to you now he has to give some to the Smiths," Adeline said, seeing it as the right thing to do.
It couldn’t be helped for her that she was raised on the principle that family stuck by each other and them out.
"How many years have gone by since you first brought up this plan to Liam and he told you no? You’re trying to throw him to your father to save yourself. I don’t want Liam to get too involved in your family and yes, it is because I want him to focus on what he has. You’re a Sterling now," Nathan said, needing her to understand that the Smiths came second now.
Adeline laughed at Nathan. "If I lose you all I would have is my family."
"If you would stop being your father’s lap dog so much then you wouldn’t lose me," Nathan fired back. "I don’t mind you helping your family but you’re way too deep into it and you’re trying to pull all of us into it with you."
"I hope you realise that you’re the one ruining this dinner, not me. I want silence until we get to the restaurant. I have too much to deal with so I can’t sit and listen to this from you. You’re like a child throwing a tantrum," Adeline said, greatly annoyed.
Had she known she was going to be questioned like this, Adeline would have decided to go to her father. Nothing about what they spoke about was going to help their marriage since they both wanted different things when it came to Liam and the family.
"I can protect you if you want to stop helping your father and brother. You’re tired. I see it and everyone around you sees it no matter how you try to smile to hide it. I was all for this in the beginning but it’s starting to get very draining," said Nathan.
"If you think you can protect me from my father then you don’t know him that well. I’m working hard to protect all of us. Anyone who is useless is gotten rid of and the only way out of this family is to have some freak accident so please, stay in your lane like you have always done," Adeline encouraged Nathan.
This wasn’t some childish game like Nathan thought it in his head. He should know better from meeting her father that he was not an easy one to deal with.
"I will not stay in my lane. Let’s get one thing clear here, Adeline. You’re the only puppet for your father here. The Smiths are doing well thanks to the Sterlings support but if you think I’ll be running to your father when he calls with you, then think again. I’ve let all of you think you call the shots here. Not anymore," Nathan decided.
