Chapter 55: Chapter 55

"I thought you were off of wine till your birthday," Nathan said as he walked into the dining room and found Adeline sitting with a glass of wine. "We were saving that bottle for a special occasion."

"Buy another. It’s not like you can’t get your hands on it. I need it right now since your son is trying to kill me," said Adeline.

Nathan laughed at the fact it was always his son when Liam misbehaved. "He’s our son. You stress yourself out by trying to control a grown man. You can’t get that boy to do what you want so give up."

Adeline lazily looked at her husband. "That’s easy to say since you got him to do what you wanted. You get to take your hands off the business and relax while he brings in money. He can do both and not just make you happy. He’s smart enough to do it."

Nathan grabbed a glass and sat down at the table with Adeline. "Maybe he would have done it if you weren’t shoving divorce in his face when he’s in love with that woman. You even tried to show up to the wedding with white but I stopped you. You should thank me."

Adeline saw Nathan as drunk already and he hadn’t taken a sip of the wine yet. "Thank you for what exactly?"

"That you didn’t completely ruin your relationship with him then. Since then, we still got him over for a few holidays with Veronica, but that’s stopped now. Now, I have to beg for him to attend our birthdays. It looks stupid to have assistants sending gifts. This family is a mess," said Nathan.

"Well, I hope you are not blaming me. I gave him everything he needed. The best toys, clothes, those stupid games he wanted, and more. I just asked for two things from him in return. To bring home a decent woman and to listen to his grandfather. He hasn’t done either one. Don’t," Adeline warned Nathan after he moved the wine bottle.

"You’re the one who goes on and on telling us not to get drunk. We will end up doing something that you have to fix. You need to be in your right mind whenever your father calls or your brother messes up like always," Nathan said in a mocking tone. He just knew it was coming for her to up and leave.

Adeline didn’t want to hear about her brother. "I don’t understand my father. I am smart enough to plan their campaigns and clean up their mess but I am not a good fit for him to push forward. Every week I am cleaning up something from that idiot brother of mine. He was almost caught with drugs."

Nathan wasn’t surprised. He poured Adeline another glass since she was going through it.

"He is a bomb waiting to explode. If we don’t watch him then he’ll get lost in the crap he does and drag my family down with him. Still, my father will hold onto him instead of cutting him loose. I just need a break from all of this," Adeline said, tired from the role given to her.

"Why don’t we take the jet and go somewhere-"

"I have a lot of work to do and your answer is to take me away from it to be even more stressed? Think Nathan, think," Adeline said, taking the refilled wine glass from him. "I can relax if your son would just listen. He’s lost his mind not divorcing her. Look at what she did for attention."

Nathan sipped his wine and then said, "I don’t know. Looks like it might have been a real accident. She doesn’t seem like the type to do something drastic for attention. What?"

"You irritate me when you try to speak good about her. Why couldn’t she have hit her head on the way down and died? Then one big problem would have been solved. Don’t look at me like that. I’ve always said that I wanted something to happen to her. I wouldn’t have minded if she was just brain-dead," said Adeline.

"So," Nathan leaned forward. "You’re not the one behind this."

"I already said that I wasn’t. If I was, she would have been dead. I don’t know how many times I need to say that it wasn’t me. My father wants her gone because she might know a few family secrets. She should have thought twice about coming into this family. It’s hard to leave without an accident," Adeline said and then drowned her wine.

Nathan was surprised that it wasn’t Adeline behind it. "Then, who went after her? The Harpers? Think they wanted to make something off her death to get that building they are talking about? I just don’t see them having the balls to do it."

"It says a lot when her mother doesn’t want her," said Adeline.

"Says the woman with a son who hates her," Nathan laughed. "You’ve got to relax a little, Adeline. There’s nothing you can do about Veronica so just welcome her to the family. You’re a little late with the welcoming and it’ll be suspicious but late is better than never."

Adeline touched her forehead. "You’re giving me a headache with these bad ideas. I have a woman who is perfect for Liam waiting for her chance to be with him and you want me to accept Veronica? You’re the one who needs to stop drinking."

It was out of the question for Adeline to act like she wanted to welcome Veronica to the family. Liam wouldn’t believe it and Adeline wasn’t going to try to make it look believable.

"You’re trying to pair him with Sabrina now? She was a good choice. Too bad she came at the wrong time. Well, I’m going to leave it to you to find a way to get rid of Veronica. I have nothing against her so I am just going to sit back and watch. Care to join me for dinner tomorrow?" Nathan asked.

"Who invited you for dinner?" Adeline asked, knowing it had to be a business arrangement.

"No one. You’re overwhelmed with doing work for others so I thought I would do something nice for you. You’re so focused on your brother and Liam’s marriage that you don’t pay much attention to me. If you’re not careful, you might lose me," Nathan said, testing her reaction.

There was only so much someone could put up with watching their spouse be occupied with other people’s relationships and their relationship put on hold.

"You need to put me above your brother and grandfather. I love you but if I have to schedule to see my wife one more time then I don’t know if I will come here. Not that I will step out on you but if you’re not careful, I might leave you first," Nathan warned Adeline.

Adeline couldn’t believe he was throwing this on her now when she had made it clear how busy she was. "Do not do this to me now, Nathan. It is not fair. I give you as much attention as I can but you know how my time must be with my family now."

"What is it that you want? To fly around somewhere? We travel a lot. We’ve travelled four times this month-"

"For you to help your family, not to spend time with me. It was just a bonus for me to tag along and show my face so your family could get me to talk about supporting your brother. I love you, Adeline. What’s so hard to understand that I want us to go somewhere without it involving work?" Nathan argued.

He hadn’t come here to vent this to her but after she thought the dinner was just for work it riled him up.

"You’re my wife. We spent a lot of our marriage working and now that I don’t have work to do, I want to be with my wife. Your brother needs to have a mind of his own and stop screwing up. You can’t be waiting around trying to clean up his mess. So, I will ask again. Will you join me for dinner?" Nathan asked, hoping she would give the right answer.

Adeline sighed as she was put in a tough spot. "I will need to bring my phone since I’m expecting a call from my father about Liam. Nathan, wait!"

"I said nothing about turning my charity event into something to make your brother look good when it was something for the Sterling family. I said nothing when you asked that I speak well about him and show my support. I said nothing about how you’re pushing for an idiot to be mayor. I just ask that I don’t hear about your family when we’re home and don’t let it get in the way of our marriage," said Nathan.

Nathan stood up, picking up the bottle of wine. "See, you can’t get mad at Liam since he learned not to listen to you. I am going to get dressed at six and head out for dinner. I am leaving whether you are next to me or not. If you need to bring your phone, stay home."

Adeline stayed quiet not to make any promises. Nathan already knew she couldn’t ignore her father’s call.
