Chapter 56: Chapter 56

Adeline tried to think of what to do. She couldn’t upset her father, but she didn’t want to lose her husband. It couldn’t be helped how involved she was in pushing her family to the top.

She did it to please her relatives and the rewards were worth working hard for.

Adeline drowned what little wine she had left in her glass. The reason she stopped drinking wasn’t because she saw the need to quit but because her father wanted her to always be ready for when he needed her so she couldn’t drink anymore.

It was a slap in the face to watch him and her brother enjoy themselves with drinks when they had events to attend. It was a few drinks to celebrate with their peers but Benjamin was the one with the drinking problem she worked hard to hide.

Adeline stood up from her seat and walked to the phone. She dialled her father’s number and prepared for the scolding she would hear.

"I hope you have called me with good news. Arrive here with Liam by six. We’ll have dinner and talk about what he needs to do to help your brother," said Vance Smith, Adeline’s father. "You know to be punctual."

"No warm greeting, father. If you didn’t know it is your daughter calling you," said Adeline, knowing it must have angered him that she didn’t answer what he wanted.

"What did you call me for?" Vanced asked, ticked off that she was speaking like a child.

Adeline rolled her eyes just as she did behind her father’s back when she was a teen. Her father was more of a boss than a father. She recalled now the times he acted like a sergeant in an army with how uniformed he wanted her to be. "I can’t meet with you and Benjamin today. I have an arrangement I cannot miss."

"Be here by the time we have already discussed. Don’t piss me off, Adeline. Now is not the time for you to be pulling these stunts. I need Liam here along with you by six."

Adeline gripped the phone. If only Nathan was here to see the position he was putting her in. Her father was impossible to speak to. "I cannot be there. I have somewhere to go with Nathan so unless you want my marriage to end, I can’t come to see you."

"What did you do? Why would you upset him at a time like this?"

Adeline had an urge to put down the phone. Why did it have to be her fault? "Working tirelessly to make Benjamin look good is what I did. I have been working too much and now it is bothering Nathan. I need to fix my marriage before I lose him. So, I can’t come today and I won’t have my phone for you to reach me."

Adeline wondered if her father walked away from the phone when there was a long pause.

"You can’t go anywhere without your phone. Think about if Benjamin needs you," he answered.

"How is Benjamin to become mayor if he can’t last a few hours without having me on standby? I don’t understand why you have never pushed for me to be in the driver’s seat. I know what needs to be done. I have a good education for it and I have the right connections after tailing you for all my life," said Adeline.

"You are to help your brother and that’s final. Don’t go anywhere without your-"

"No," Adeline disrupted her father. "I am going to go out with Nathan tonight and make him happy before I lose him. You pushed me right into his arms when we were younger. Be happy that I love him and I’m trying to keep the marriage. If I lose Nathan it’s going to hurt you," Adeline said, knowing this should change his mind.

Her father wouldn’t be happy not to see her tonight but he would be angry if she were to get a divorce from Nathan. It was a bad look at this time and he didn’t want to lose Nathan’s support.

"Get your son to come to my house tonight. He’s starting to become a liability and you know what happens to them-"

"No!" Adeline yelled, unable to stay obedient when he was threatening Liam’s safety. "You cannot touch a single hair on his head. That’s where I draw the line!"

Adeline was all for whatever her father wanted to do but not when it came to harming her son.

"Do not try to trouble him. You will lose me if you do. With the job you’ve given me, I will be the last person you want to make angry," Adeline said, fighting back since he was going too far this time. "I know all your tricks so don’t try to put me in some kind of accident. I can have it ready to send out even in my death."

His response was to end the call since Adeline wasn’t listening.

Adeline moved the phone from her ear and instead of putting it down where she found it, she hit it repeatedly on the wooden table, creating a mark where she bashed it over and over again.

They were all going to drive her insane. She worked too hard for her family for them to turn around and speak of hurting Liam since he wasn’t falling in line. Only she could punish her son.

Adeline was too furious to move. Her father had to take her threats seriously since she could take down this family with what she knew.

She wasn’t a fool. While cleaning up their mess, Adeline knew to get evidence of a few things to one day save herself.

After she calmed down from the anger caused by her father, Adeline couldn’t believe she had argued with her father. She was going to see them again and it was going to be awkward. Benjamin would make sure of it if he were present.

When that time came, she would deal with it but right now, Adeline had to find a way to make Nathan happy.

Before she moved to find him, Adeline made a call to Liam to warn him. This was why he needed to listen to her. She knew what was best for him and how to keep him safe.

There wasn’t an answer from Liam.

"He must be with that little vixen," she muttered.

It was moments like this when Adeline wanted to leave Liam hanging and have him think of a way to protect himself but she loved him. Veronica could go but no harm should come to Liam.
