Chapter 140: Chapter 140

"Look around you at the kind of life I gave to my family. You sent your daughter a few thousand dollars a month. A month," Henry repeated so it would be understood how little that was. "What was that going to do for her here?"

"That’s strange. What I sent for her wasn’t a few thousand a month. It might have started off low when I was working my way up but I wouldn’t call fifteen thousand dollars a month little. On birthdays, it was twenty-five thousand and when she graduated high school it was fifty for her to get a good car. Kids like shiny things right?" Dean asked.

Dean didn’t want Veronica to feel out of place among her peers.

"I had to send as much money as I could to make up for not being around her. Evelyn must have been confused since she kept most of the money for herself and talked about a few thousand to you. You had a building to buy and a business that was going under fast. Evelyn could have gotten you out of that," Dean shared what should now be obvious.

Dean wasn’t kind enough to let Evelyn keep what money she had left. Something had to go to the rightful owner even though Veronica didn’t need it now.

Dean watched as Henry stumbled back like he was going to pass out. It would come as a shock to know the person who could have helped him out of his financial troubles was right there with him all along. "She’s always been a little sneaky like that. You never noticed it?"

Henry tried to think of any other accounts he had seen during his marriage with Evelyn. They always had the joint one and he thought he played it smart by having another in his name that Evelyn didn’t know about but all this time she was playing the same game as him.

Henry wanted to call this all lies but Evelyn wasn’t here for him to believe that she wouldn’t have played him like that. "All this time,’ he said, still in disbelief. "She had that money and all the money I handed to her for her to enjoy herself."

It was a hard truth to swallow that all this time instead of looking around for ways to make extra money Evelyn had been the solution but she hid her money from him.

"She can be a snake sometimes but don’t act like you told her about all your money. I wouldn’t have if I were in your shoes so the two of you played each other. I’m giving you a peaceful way to end things with her so if you could just point in the direction of her things, that would be good. I have places to be," Dean said, his time limited.

Henry finally acknowledged the papers being held out to him. "I am not signing anything. If Evelyn wants to leave me then she has to come and do it herself."

Dean sighed. "I wanted to do this the easy way. I thought about killing you. A quick blow to the head and then squeezing you into those boxes to carry you out but I’ve done a lot since I came to this city so I wanted to go easy on you. Do you want me to go easy on you?"

Henry regretted his earlier answer. What kind of man had Evelyn gotten herself involved with in the past? This wasn’t anything he heard. "If you came here to kill me then it was stupid to show your face."

"Because of the cameras. We went through that already. My face has been caught on camera too many times. In all my life, I got arrested two times and I plan to let it stop there. I’m a man who doesn’t come out much," Dean shared.

He lived his life out of sight now that he had moved far up the rankings to send men around to do his work but what happened to Veronica changed that. He wanted to see for himself when everyone involved got what they deserved.

"Do you know why I foolishly showed up here even though I wore a hat on the way up?" Dean asked, curious about Henry’s answer.

Henry didn’t want to answer to give any ideas. "I didn’t do anything to be killed over. I gave her a room, the clothes she needed, fed her, and paid for anything regarding her school. That was more than the twenty grand you want me to accept. Evelyn told me that you were a small restaurant owner but that was clearly not the case."

After another look, Henry recognised the brands Dean was wearing. This wasn’t an ordinary man.

Henry had only two things on his mind now. Why did Evelyn lie about her past and was he going to get out of this alive?

"I won’t tell anyone about you coming here. Her things are all in that room," Henry pointed to his bedroom. "You’re doing me a favour by getting her out of my life. What man wants to stay with a woman who will abandon him when things get rocky? If you could just give me a bit more money."

"For what? To save that dealership or that niece of yours? I can’t help you that much but I will offer you a little more to buy your silence. I’ll be watching you closely from now to see if you go to the police, bother Veronica or try to reconnect with your ex-wife. Move on from them and focus on yourself," Dean advised Henry.

Unbeknownst to Henry, this money wouldn’t be in his hands for a long time. The nice home they wanted Veronica to be thankful for wouldn’t be around long since Henry wasn’t smart with his investments.

"That building would have saved you now, wouldn’t it?" Dean threw salt into Henry’s wound.

Henry signed his name on the papers to get this over with and then looked to the man who counted the money for him. It was a surprisingly good deal on his end to be paid to leave Evelyn. He was going to miss her a little but considering how much she kept from him, he would be able to move on fast.

Henry almost rubbed his hands at the sight of the money being counted out. It wouldn’t solve all his problems but it would be a start. One of the reasons money flew out of his hands so fast was gone now that Evelyn wasn’t his problem. All he needed to do was focus on himself and Beth now.

Dean stood up from the couch. As fun as it was to see Henry be so easily bought with money, he had places to be. "Move faster with her things."
