Benjamin bit his nail. He was nervous about how the night would go.

In a few hours, he could be free of his father and be the one running this family since Adeline was nowhere to be seen or he could be dragged down with this stranger he was putting his fate in.

Vance was in a foul mood but this wasn’t something new to Benjamin. He was only surprised that his father allowed him to ride with him. It had to be that Vance didn’t trust he would be on his best behaviour without Adeline around to clean up for him.

Benjamin didn’t mind it since by the end of the night he would take his father’s spot. Benjamin planned to be on his best behaviour to impress Vance’s peers. This was his time to shine.

Vance stared at Benjamin who was grinning like a fool. It meant Benjamin was up to no good. "Don’t do anything stupid tonight. This is not the kind of party where you can drink and be reckless. There are some important people here that you need to impress. Don’t embarrass me."

Benjamin smiled. "I won’t let you down tonight. I need to start doing well by myself. Watch and be amazed. I’ll show you that we don’t need Adeline. Have you heard from her?"

Benjamin didn’t need Adeline popping up now to ruin his plans. As fun as it would be to take her out at the same time as their father, he didn’t want any of the spotlight on her tonight.

"Your sister will be back soon and when she returns, I expect that you will give her a warm welcome. I’ve given her enough time for a vacation for her to get rid of her silly dreams. Still, you need to do your part to not throw so much work on her. The drinking and everything else ends now," Vance said, annoyed that Benjamin had yet to change his ways.

"I’m already done with those things. I had some time to think and realise what is at stake here. I want to make you proud and not regret pushing me forward. I know I did a lot of stupid things in the past and it’s not too late to make up for it. I have to show just how I am your son," said Benjamin.

Vance wasn’t easily impressed by what Benjamin said but he was looking forward to the show. Benjamin had one chance to impress him and then after that, he was back to being an idiot if he failed.

Benjamin was merely a puppet controlled by Vance so Benjamin didn’t need to be too smart.

"You need to start making more appearances with your wife and children. I have somewhere for you to go so make sure all of them are free to join you," said Vance.

"My children are always ready to attend any event. Speaking of this, have you decided what you are going to do about Liam? I tried to reach out to him but he keeps disrespecting the Smiths. You’ve gone too easy on him so he thinks he can do as he likes. He just needs a proper scolding once," Benjamin said, trying to kill two birds with one stone.

Benjamin didn’t have any conflict with Liam but he just had a feeling that Liam was going to be a problem in the future.

Vance didn’t need to tell Benjamin about what he planned to do with Liam. His way of punishing Liam was going to start soon but first, he had to go after that woman. "Is Julia still close to his wife?"

"Veronica? I think she is. I don’t hear about her going to see Veronica but then again, my daughter doesn’t tell me everything. If you need me to ask Julia to invite Veronica somewhere then I can do it for you. I don’t like how that woman acts. She fooled herself into thinking that she could become part of this family."

Vance tapped his fingers on his leg. "I need to have a word with Julia so tell her to come to my home tomorrow. Why doesn’t she bring my great-grandchild more?"

"I don’t know but I will have him there with you tomorrow to see you. She’s been a little busy these days so I hope you won’t scold her too much," Benjamin said and then tried to laugh off how upset his father was.

Benjamin couldn’t stop smiling because he knew his father wouldn’t get what he wanted done. Vance wouldn’t be seeing Julia or her son tomorrow. Benjamin only hoped that his smile wasn’t giving away that he was up to something.

Benjamin looked out of the car window to see if anyone was following them. If he got his hopes up high just for the stranger he was communicating with to let him down. No matter who this person was, Benjamin would drag them down with him if they were setting him up.

Vance noticed Benjamin looking nervous already. They weren’t inside yet and Benjamin was already like this. Vance didn’t have any faith that Benjamin would impress him which was why he needed Adeline back but she stopped replying to him.

He needed to deal with Adeline when she returned for acting so out of line.

For now, Vance got out of the car when it stopped and smiled at the people standing outside the party. His family conflict didn’t exist here since they were to look perfect for whoever was watching.

Benjamin exited the car and joined his father to greet the other guest. ’How is he going to do it?’ He wondered.

Benjamin wasn’t let in on the plans for how Vance was just going to vanish.

"Mr Sterling."

Benjamin forgot about the plan and extended his right hand to a man he needed to speak to when his father wasn’t around. "Good to see you."

Vance kept a close eye on Benjamin. So far, Benjamin was doing well but it was when the drinks started to come that Benjamin made a fool of himself if he was left alone for too long.

"Mr Smith."

Vance looked away from Benjamin to the man holding out his hand to be greeted. "I have not seen you before."

Dean still held his hand out to be shaken. "I am new in the city. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you and all the Smiths. I would love to do business with you and talk about it privately tonight if you would allow me."

Vance kept his hands to his side. "I’m sure you would love to talk but with how busy I am tonight, I can’t. Perhaps another time," he replied and then went on his way.

A newcomer couldn’t have Vance’s attention so early on. Vance needed to be impressed first.

Dean looked forward to Vance changing his mind by the end of the night.

"You!"

Dean ignored Benjamin who couldn’t at least hold back being surprised he was there. Instead of telling Benjamin to be quiet, he followed Vance inside.
