Chapter 120: Chapter 120

"Why do you get to constantly stare at your phone but the second I pick up my phone you get annoyed?" Adeline asked, trying to figure out how this was fair.

"Because you are on your phone checking to see what your father is up to or if he has decided to use you while I am speaking to our son. Liam is finally reaching out to me so I have to respond. See," Nathan said, happily showing a text with Liam’s name.

It was all about what Adeline was doing but it was still a conversation that Liam started so Nathan had to take it. They had to start from here and try to talk about other things down the line.

Adeline grew suspicious of what the two had to talk about and why Nathan was only telling her about it now. "Let me see," she held out her hand for Nathan’s phone.

"No," Nathan denied her. "This is a conversation between father and son. Why don’t you reach out to him? Oh, does he still have you blocked?"

Adeline bit her tongue to refrain from saying something horrible to Nathan. After she calmed herself a bit she asked, "Are you telling him about me? If you are, I should at least see what is said. Is this about my father again?"

"It is,’ Nathan answered, placing his phone in his pocket. Adeline didn’t need to see what was said between him and Liam. She would only get in the way and then Liam wouldn’t reach out to Nathan anymore. "We’re all just waiting to see if you’ll go crawling back. I am waiting to see if I need to speak to my lawyers about divorce."

Adeline placed her hands on her hips. She was done with the conversation from the moment it started. "I am right here with you and yet you aren’t satisfied. I don’t want to hear about divorce anymore since I am putting an effort to do something to make you happy."

"I don’t understand you of all people. I was never angry when you wanted to make your father proud of you. I supported you time and time again. Now it is my turn that I want to have my father see my worth and you are angry. Is this because Liam is upset so you want to take his side to look good?" Adeline asked.

Did she always have to look like a bad parent?

Nathan laughed at Adeline. "We talked about you stepping away from your father before Liam got involved so don’t act like this is about him. I put divorce on the table before then and you know it. I am willing to make a deal with you. I will give you my phone if you hand your phone over to me."

Adeline was the next to laugh. "Why? So you can check for messages from my father? If you want to know, just ask. I’ve been more than honest with you."

"You’ve been honest? I thought we were done with your father for good but then Liam showed that you were just going to go back. I don’t like my time wasted so be honest with me. Are you going to go back? Is making your father proud more important than me or your son?" Nathan asked.

"You don’t understand it. He was hardly ever proud of us so we tried our hardest to do anything to make him smile. After all the work I have done for my father, I know he isn’t proud of me yet. It’s a goal that I had when I was young and I won’t feel complete until I accomplish it," Adeline replied.

"Adeline," Nathan placed his hands on her shoulders. "It’s taken this long for your father to give you credit. You’re not going to get it from him. He’ll dangle something before your face to pull you back in and then set you to the side eventually. Let go of him before you lose the people who care for you."

"Like Liam? That boy doesn’t care for me-"

"I meant me as well. Your issues with Liam come from trying to push him into your father’s arms. I have my issues with Liam but I am trying to fix them and I acknowledged where I went wrong. To Liam, you are your father," Nathan said, disappointed that she didn’t see it.

Adeline disagreed with Nathan. She didn’t beat Liam or insult him when he failed. "I am nothing like my father when it comes to being a parent. I treated Liam better than I was treated when I was a child. Liam had a luxury that he took for granted."

"You don’t even see it," Nathan shook his head. "I just want to give up on you sometimes but then I think about how much I love you so I stay. I am getting tired of this. There’s nothing left for you with your father. We should focus on ourselves and fix our relationship with the one child we have."

"I don’t care to fix my relationship with Liam now. Didn’t I make that clear already? He’s picked what he wanted and I don’t like his choice so I would rather stay away. You wanted me to get rid of Veronica," Adeline reminded Nathan.

"I did but if I have to keep playing nice to have Liam come around then I will do it. I’m not getting any younger here. I want my family together. I made too many mistakes which led to us being like this. You need to wake up," Nathan advised Adeline. "If he wanted you, he wouldn’t have let you walk out that door."

Adeline didn’t like speaking about this with Nathan because he gave her the cold harsh truth and killed her hope. She already knew that her father wouldn’t just give her what she wanted and if she were to go back, he would punish her for what he would call a tantrum.

"We’ll find something else to be your goal and make you feel complete," Nathan promised, willing to work with her if she would just move on from her father. "Will you give it a try?" He offered his hand to her for a deal to be made.

Adeline didn’t like the feeling of giving up. She was giving up something she wanted to accomplish for years but it was true that she might never get it. If Benjamin were to succeed with their father’s plans, he wouldn’t get any compliments either. They were always lacking something in Vance’s eyes.

"Fine," Adeline decided to try Nathan’s plans.

"Good," Nathan lifted her hand to kiss it. "We’re going to start enjoying our lives how we want from now on. No running around for anyone else. Why is your phone going off with so many messages?" He asked, puzzled by the number of notifications he heard. Was it Vance?

Adeline was once again annoyed. "I thought I muted it. That is Benjamin claiming to have some bright ideas. I need to block him."

Adeline didn’t want any parts of what Benjamin had planned.
