Chapter 338: No One’s Good Enough

Chapter 338: No One’s Good Enough

Contrary to what Ethan had expected, Clara’s eyes narrowed once she had heard his answer, her attitude turning colder.

"Is that so?" she asked, lifting her brows. "Do you truly have feelings for him... Or are you just interested in him because he’s a powerful Esper? Or because he’s handsome?"

Ethan’s face twitched. That’s not how it was supposed to go... But he still maintained his calm. "Of course not! He’s... He’s an amazing person!"

"Of course he is," Clara rolled her eyes. "It’s just that... How long have you even known him?"

"Well..."

"TRULY known him. I’m not asking how long it’s been since you’ve first met," Clara specified before Ethan could answer. After all, they might have run into each other a year or more ago because of work... But so what? Such a brief encounter would be meaningless. It might have been enough for someone to develop a crush, but not true, deeper feelings.

Ethan understood what Clara was thinking, so he averted his eyes, scratching his neck. "It hasn’t been long... And while it’s true that I don’t know the Team Leader well yet... I still can’t help but admire him."

Clara sized him up with her eyes, not saying anything for a moment. She didn’t see anything odd with other people developing feelings for Damien - he was her caring older brother, of course he was great! It was just that...

"You’re from the Allen Guild. I’ve heard that you have only joined the Association as a temporary member?" she scoffed. "The Allen Guild had long been trying to scout my brother. They had even tried to arrange a marriage alliance! Aren’t you just their new attempt?"

Ethan’s eyes widened slightly. They had been getting along just fine, so he lowered his guard a bit... But he didn’t expect the woman to be so sharp!

Still, he wouldn’t have been sent by the Allens if he couldn’t even deal with a little stumble like that. There was no marriage offer on the table, so Clara’s accusations were nothing more than simple guesses that couldn’t be proved!

"It’s not like that," he explained slightly. "While it’s true that I’m only a temporary member... I haven’t been sent here for Team Leader Lennox, but rather for Lane."

Clara’s brows rose up a bit higher. "For Lane? Why?"

"His parents are a bit worried about him, you see. Speaking of which..." Ethan continued, the corners of his mouth hooking up in a hint of a smile, "Shouldn’t you be more suspicious of Lane, if you think the Allens want to snatch your brother? He’s a member of the Allen family, so he’s far more suitable for an arranged marriage."

Of course, Clara was already aware that Lane was related to the Allens. Even putting his surname aside, the family resemblance was clear. It was just that she was also aware that Lane didn’t get along with his parents, so...

"I doubt he’d ever go for something like an arranged marriage," she scoffed. It was hard to say whether she was criticizing Lane or agreeing with him on this... She probably didn’t know either. Because while she disliked Lane, she didn’t support the idea of an arranged marriage, especially when her brother was concerned. Damien deserved better.

However, Ethan only smiled in response. "I wouldn’t be so sure... He might seem unruly, but he’s still Nyla’s twin brother. When it comes down to it, who knows, perhaps he’s willing to take his sister’s place?"

Clara momentarily froze, her eyes widening so much they looked as if they might fall out of their sockets. She stared at Ethan blankly for a while, before blinking twice.

"He’s... He’s what?" she muttered. "Twin brother? Whose?"

"Nyla Allen’s. You know, the heiress of the Allen Guild. The A-rank Esper with telekinesis..."

Naturally, Clara knew who Nyla Allen was. She was one of the most promising Espers in their generation, and had been active in the field for over a decade, participating in dangerous raids while at the same time completing her degree. She was beautiful, powerful, smart, and talented, and on top of that, also kind! Truly, a role model. Clara had had the opportunity to meet her before, and she was looking up to the woman...

But...

"How could that be?" she muttered, shaking her head with disbelief. "How..."

Yes, Lane and Nyla did look very much alike. Even though they were of different genders, and Lane had pastel pink hair, the resemblance between them was undeniable. And they were the same age. But still...

Clara turned her eyes back to Ethan. No matter how shocking this revelation was, Lane being Nyla Allen’s twin brother wasn’t the most important now.

"So you’re saying that he was sent here to replace Nyla as Damien’s arranged fiancé?" she asked, her voice once again sharp.

"This... I don’t know that," Ethan answered hesitantly. Although he wanted to drive a wedge between Lane and Damien, and Clara could help with that, he couldn’t just make up fake facts, as it might backfire. "I’m not a member of the Allen family, so I don’t know about their plans... I’m just saying that it’s a possibility."

"Hmm," Clara hummed in response, throwing a glance at Damien and Lane, who were sitting together some distance away. Possibility... Well, perhaps it could be true, but she still didn’t think it was right. She disliked Lane and didn’t trust his intentions toward Damien, but the idea of Lane trying to lure Damien to the Allen Guild just didn’t quite add up.

Seeing that Clara was doubtful, Ethan didn’t push it any harder, and just asked with a smile, "Either way, Lane has always liked to sleep around, and never took any relationship seriously. But I’m not like that... Don’t you think I would be a better partner for your brother?"

Clara looked him up and down. "That remains to be seen!" she just snapped sharply, and turned around.

Yes, she didn’t like Lane... But she didn’t think much of Ethan either! When it came to his brother, no one seemed to be good enough!
