Chapter 337: Team Leader’s Sister

Chapter 337: Team Leader’s Sister

Although Lane really didn’t want to spend any more time in the company of this strange ’hate on Lane’ alliance, he still forced himself to stick around. The reason was simple - he had to know what both of them were saying to each other. Not because he cared about the insults they were spouting, or how they were mocking him - he didn’t care about the opinion of either of them - but because both of them knew a few things about him... Things that Lane didn’t want them to reveal to the other. Not anything all that important, but...

Ethan was a spy sent from the Allen. The less he knew, the better. Even the most insignificant things about Lane and Damien were best kept away from him.

Luckily, he was concerned for nothing. No matter how much Clara disliked Lane... There wasn’t much that she could say, aside from complaining how Lane seemed like a rich fuckboy, and was hopeless when it came to doing chores. Saying anything more, for example how he kept the laws regarding the ability usage in complete disregard, might implicate Damien as well, so she knew to keep her mouth shut.

And Ethan wasn’t stupid either. He could say that Lane was rich or liked to sleep around, but he wouldn’t mention anything about his family situation. He didn’t even mention anything about how Lane’s rank was suspicious. It was one thing to talk about it in front of Damien, who was aware of Lane’s situation, and another in front of a stranger... Or even Damien’s sister. After all, Lane’s rank change was something that the higher-ups at the Association were aware of. Spreading rumors might land Ethan in trouble. It’s also something the Allens didn’t want, at least for the time being...

So, the two of them limited themselves to insignificant gossip. Even so, they were such a well-matched pair, that even when talking about the most trivial things, they could keep the conversation going for hours...

Lane had a bad feeling about that.

It was only when it was time for a lunch break that their conversation finally got interrupted.

The team returned to the inspection center at the entrance of the Restricted Zone for their lunch break. They couldn’t leave the zone, as it would require them all to be examined first to check for the presence of the parasite monsters, just in case, but they couldn’t stay in the Zone either. After all, even if they could somehow bear with the stench while measuring the Mana fluctuation, enduring it while having a meal was a bit too much... As for the places to stop inside the Zone, the private residences seemed inappropriate, while public places were also littered with corpses. Thus, Damien led them back to the entrance. It wasted a bit of their time, but in the end, it was just a twenty or so minute march, perhaps even less. They might have been busy, but not so busy that they couldn’t even afford to do that.

Once they finally entered the inspection center, most of the team members exhaled with relief. Even though most of them were experienced Field Agents who had survived plenty disasters, some things were simply impossible to get used to... Wandering around the former battlefield was bound to affect them, both physically and mentally. Most of them had no appetite, and it was only because they needed strength to carry on with their duties that they forced themselves to eat.

And Clara was no different. While she had spent the day laughing and mocking Lane with Ethan, her face was still dark and her blue eyes somber. She still seemed queasy, but she still took out two lunch boxes from her spatial bag.

"I’m going to talk to my brother now," she said to Ethan, while her eyes quickly swept through the room, narrowing once she saw Damien. Because right next to Damien, there was already a pink-haired pest. She was certain that he had been following after her and Ethan this whole time, which was why she was so enthusiastic about mocking the man... But how did he get to Damien so fast? It was as the moment Damien had officially announced the break, he had teleported himself to his side! She was about to rush to them to interrupt whatever was going on, when Ethan’s surprised voice reached her.

"Your brother?" Ethan lifted his brows. "Your brother is also on this team?"

"Yes," Clara nodded. "I’m Team Leader Lennox’s sister."

"Oh... I didn’t know."

Clara didn’t think much of it. Many people probably didn’t know about it. Although it wasn’t a secret, they didn’t talk openly about it either. And if they didn’t say it, it was naturally hard for other people to guess... They had different surnames, after all, since Damien insisted on changing back to his mother’s maiden name, while the rest of the siblings didn’t. Not because they had any warm feelings toward their bastard of the father, but simply because they didn’t care enough to bother. And on top of that, she and Damien looked completely different, one taking after mother, while the other after father...

It was normal that Ethan didn’t know. So, she just nodded her head absentmindedly, and was about to walk away...

When Ethan’s voice stopped her again. "You do know about Team Leader’s relationship with Lane, then?"

Clara’s face immediately twisted, and she couldn’t help but scoff. "What relationship? It’s not going to last anyway!"

"Oh? And why do you think so?"

Even though Clara was focused on Damien and Lane, she didn’t miss the hint of joy in Ethan’s voice. She paused, and turned back to face the man again.

"Why are you so interested in it?" she asked, her eyes turning sharp. "Could it be... That you have any feelings for my brother?"

Ethan’s eyes widened. For a moment, he was stunned. He didn’t expect the young woman to guess his intentions so accurately...

But soon, his surprise turned into a wide smile. It didn’t matter. Actually... Wasn’t it even better? He might have just found himself an ally!

"Yes," he said. "I do..."
