Chapter 98: 2.27.2 Truce

"Is this another play, you demon?" Maisel asked, looking at the figure of his son that now stood up and looked toward him.

But before he can continue with his question, Farhad grabbed his neck and then like the time his body did to the guard, he ripped out the flesh of his neck in front of his own father.

Confusion, fear, and panic spread over Farhad’s face as he didn’t understand why he did this. Why would he kill himself in front of the man who he hated, why would his body move on his own?

Was it the game of that faceless bastard?

Or was it another one of the dreams, but this one based on his own life? He didn’t know a thing, he only felt weakness as he fell over as the blood kept flowing out of his neck.

Prompting his father, who was still in confusion, to panic. "No.., no ... not again." He didn’t know what just happened. A moment ago, his dead son’s body called him father with the same emotion he remembers from the past.

Then the next, the very same body ripped its throat out, without any pause.

Making him aware of one thing.

’It’s the curse.’ He thought, rushing to his son. As for whether this was his son or not, it was not important for now. He was going to believe the devil’s words if it meant there was a chance for his child to survive.

While on the other side, Kairut hid in the corner, recuperating his injuries and recovering his mana for future battles.

As the one he fought just now was over. A fact that he was very sure of, considering how his master was actually.

As for Maisel, his head hurt seeing his child, and the feeling of guilt and all the mistakes he had made came crashing down on him. But this was also an opportunity for him. If he can stop his child’s death, then all will be good.

Though when he took over his son’s body and looked at the bleeding hole in his neck, it was already healing at a fast rate noticeable to the naked eye.

Confused for a while, he felt that Farhad had no pulse, and his body smelled rotten as well. Making him understand one thing.

’Is this truly a game?’ The amount of emotional shocks he suffered during these past few minutes was too much. Now when close, he understood that his son had truly not revived.

Who knows, it might be another game by that bastard.

’Yes... it’s just like what happened to seniors.’

He recalls a time when he used to live in fear, a time when he dragged his family away from the army and lived into deeper parts of the kingdom in hiding while taking even more disgusting jobs by the army in return for ensuring the safety of his family.

All of it is due to the monster that he antagonized. But when he finally ensured that the monster was not after him anymore and he started to live in the light once again.

The monster came knocking on his door again, taking away his son and now playing a disgusting game.

"Father? What are you doing?" Farhad asked, looking at the father that he hated, who was aiming a fireball at his face.

Intending to give him a clean death. But this question was also followed by another uncontrollable action of his hand, as he tried to kill himself again.

But then, he was stopped by his father’s hand, who ended up crying instead of killing him for good.

"Don’t worry, I will free you from him and whatever this is." Holding the hands of his son from killing himself, he summoned a chain made out of fire to bind him in place, while calling out to Kairut on the corner. "Kairut, explain!!"

The eyes that his son looked at him with, can’t be faked. He understood that this was his son, though he was not completely his son as well, for there was a monster hiding under his skin. An act of final revenge on the man who killed his puppet.

"I don’t know much. The Jester rarely explains anything to me." Kairut said from the side, before continuing. "But I can assure you, the one in front of you is not the Jester at the moment. I know for I can feel his existence weakening at this very moment." Kairut didn’t mind explaining such details to an enemy. Because he understood at the moment what Jester was planning to do. And he didn’t mind helping his master in this case.

"Father? Am I really awake?" Farhad on the other hand remained in a delirious state caused by his sudden awakening. As it happens when one wakes from a dream, he doesn’t remember his experience in the dream clearly, but he clearly remembers the suffering he experienced, an experience filled with fire and misery, just like how he felt now.

Which made him confused with reality as he wondered whether the fire rope that bound him was the same as his dream where he was surrounded by fire.

"You are awake, Farhad. And don’t worry, I won’t let anyone else hurt you anymore."

The alien’s words from his father sounded assuring to him. Although his mentality hadn’t stabilized, being next to his father calmed him down for some reason.

Though he didn’t know why, something in his mind was scratching against his skull, and the urge to rip out of his throat came and went from time to time.

Who knows what might happen if his father hadn’t bound his hands?

"Father... where is this place?"

Kairut didn’t look too deeply into this exchange among the family. He just tried to understand what game Jester was playing before turning silent.

’The boy loves his father, no matter what he used to claim.’ Of course, Kairut knew certain details about Farhad, when he was still a student in his Tower. He did so out of the interest Jester had shown in the boy.

And now that might turn advantageous to him.

"Marshall, Considering that your Son is still in the lands of the living, there is no need for further conflict?"

Recovering some strength, Kairut came a bit closer to the father and son duo as he recommended a truce. But Maisel was not in such a mood.

As Kairut’s words disturbed the exchange between father and son. "Stay where you are. I know your connections to the one you call Jester. I can feel his presence inside my son even now."

"And I wish to burn him... but it will also burn my son." His son was learning the occult, the study of dark arts and spirits. The very path that was food for his flames. And now when his son’s body moves with the occult, these flames were nothing more than poison to his son.

Making it so, if he didn’t control his fires, his son would burn to crisps in his hand.

Which was why, he can only leave the Jester to live inside his son for now. Just for a while till all of this is over and he finds a cure to his curse and a life of freedom.

"Marshall, I understand your anger. And there is something I want to say to you, which I wasn’t able to before."

The before he is speaking of when Maisel first came to this city.

"I can tell you one thing for sure, the Jester never intends to harm your son. Instead, I would say, he protected him." Although Kairut was at first confused before Jester’s conflicting actions of protecting and then killing Farhad.

But now looking at the boy that seemed very much alive. He started to believe that his earlier predictions might be right.

"It’s why I believe the two of us can work together for now, the enemy we both face is someone very strong. You should know, any help is good at the moment."

At those words, Maisel contemplated for a bit. The fact that his son was alive opened his mind a bit, as the dark thoughts were pushed to the side. Which made him calmer and easier to see the gist of the situation.

He understood how underpowered he was and how the upcoming battle would probably result in his death if he didn’t utilize all the strength he could muster.

As for calling the military as backup?

It was not possible, considering the nature of his curse.

Only those that hate him and intended to betray him can survive the effect of the curse.

But before he could answer properly, his senses detected some presence above his head. From the little vibrations and movements, he can ascertain these were trucks. Which was not possible considering the curfew.

And the only ones that can drive a truck in the streets were one party.

’The army is here?’

He is tough.

He can only hope these men who were above him didn’t know him, nor do they hold any good intentions toward him, for this will result in their death.

Not like he can detect anything other than the arrival of the trucks.

"They will be here soon," Kairut said and motioned his hand to create a wall made out of dirt to block the path where the army might enter. "Our fight caused a big commotion. The army even dispatched a truck full of soldiers."

Maisel knew that in his foolishness he made a big mistake. Now these men might die if he doesn’t do anything.
