Chapter 715: 11.04.1 A good brother.

Plans were made and promises were broken, but this is what one must do when survival is on the line.

Ahead sat Darde’s brother-in-law, full of life and exuding magical radiation oh so common for mages, there was no arrogance on his angered face, while his tone contained a flurry of questions that he threw at his sister’s husband one by one. Which Darde was forced to answer, including certain lies he weaved in between.

"You... I knew she shouldn’t have married someone as weak as you." These words hurt, and they earned a level of anger from the said sister, who looked at her older brother with a hint of derision as she said. "Brother, please speak carefully, he is my everything, the other half, if you curse him, you are cursing me." Nerissa reprimanded her brother, who might appear only in his mid-thirties, but his true age was far above Nerissa, there was a difference of decades.

"Nerissa, your tantrums won’t work this time, not when your life is in danger due to him."

"Not her life, just mine..." Darde corrected before the misunderstanding solidified in his brother-in-law’s mind.

However it would seem, he misunderstood the point that his brother-in-law was making. "They came for the whole family, didn’t they?"

At that point, Darde went silent. He had exposed what happened without shame, although this man hated him, unlike his father-in-law. At the end of the day, he was still family, and letting him understand the gravity of the situation would make him more attentive while taking care of his sister and niece.

Which is why Darde exposed it all.

"If not for the help of your sister, do you think you could have taken down so many of those people?" At those words, the eyes of the brother-in-law by the name of Nerus turned toward the corner where a woman stood, away from him, but giving him the same kind of creepy feeling his brother-in-law did.

Truly made from the same fabric, both of them. Rarely do any families exist where each member of them is mystic, for this talent is random and rarely genetic-based. Unless of course, it’s an old Exorcist families that have their own secrets and inheritances that make it possible.

But Darde was not, his background was clean and still contained such talents.

Hell, the only reason his suspicions rose was when his niece was born exuding a higher level of spirituality than the rest, showing insight even from a young age. And now this sister of Darde, it becomes all the more apparent that this is a lineage with its own specialty and baggage. Something that Nerus didn’t want for his one and only sister.

A simple and normal life, that’s all he hoped for, a life where even after marriage she will live under his father and his protection. But no one knew where this bastard student appeared from and wooed her with his glib tongue.

Well, he did learn of his background the next day since learning his existence, which came out pretty clean. But this made it all the more suspicious.

And now, all those previous fears combined, his suspicions have finally found some base. "None." Replied Darde, knowing full well how powerless he actually was. "But this is why I am to request your help, please take them away from here..." Darde spoke, sounding genuine, which did make Nerus sigh for a bit.

"You bastard... you wish to turn my sister into a widow so early in her life?" The fact that Darde only requested Nerus to save his wife and niece made him even more angry.

It would have been better if this bastard came out in the open and directly begged Nerus to save himself. But no, whether it’s the ego or some other reason, he chose to just focus on his family. "I have enough influence and power to save both of you... unless you lied, and you are aware of who is after you?"

Nerus was no fool, their family was part of a major conglomerate that dealt with magic items. A company directly backed by a Tower, it would be simple for them to safeguard people like Darde if he wishes for such.

But he didn’t. The thought never came into the mind of someone whose job was to think unless he had some idea of who it was, and this is why he made such a choice.

Which Darde won’t deny.

"I can’t speak much on that," Darde spoke, looking toward his sister. "For now, take them away. With their safety ensured, it would be easier for me to move around and learn who is after me and why and don’t worry, my older sister will help me through it." Darde spoke as Nerus looked at his sister-in-law Gloria who nodded in response.

Someone he just met for the first time and their interaction didn’t even amount to much besides a few words of greeting.

It was hard to trust a woman like this, but Nerus chose to do it in the end.

The discussion that did devolve into scrutiny went on for hours before the group reached a conclusion. "A month, that’s all you ask?"

"I will be back in under a month, I promise. If I can’t, you can always come and save me." Darde laughed. Acting subservient to Nerus at this moment.

"You better do it... or all that fight effort of Neri to marry you will go to waste." He cursed for a bit before getting up and choosing to take some rest.

Although government housing like this was too cramped compared to the house Nerus is used to living in, it was his sister’s home so he didn’t complain much about it and chose to just go to sleep for a while.

However, that was only on the surface.

A small orb flew out of his clothes, which divided into two and then four, before turning into a total of sixty-four, that turned transparent and flew through the house housing sector and then covered in greater areas and each nook and cranny that was not humanly possible.

’Who wants to kill you?’ If the words of Darde hold true, then whoever it is, they should be keeping an eye on him one way or another. And the more serious the situation, the more eyes that will be focused on him.

But aside from finding a higher level of rats in the sewer area, which made Nerus question the city’s hygiene, there was nothing.

Which in turn itself was something to worry about. ’What kind of enemies would a family of Mystics hold?’

He wondered, feeling the spiritual power in this house heightened for a bit. ’Two... they are keeping an eye on me? Or... ’ Nerus knew that he was thinking too much. These two siblings were just making sure there was no one in the surroundings. ’How long will they be able to keep this up?’

"Go to sleep... take some rest today, it’s the most I can do for you." He spoke, letting the two gradually give up their mind to fatigue and falling asleep, white Nerus, although he spoke about wishing to rest, chose to keep watch tonight.

’These bastards, can’t even take rest in my sister’s home.’

Safe to say, although Nerus put up a strong front in front of his family, at the end of the day, he was a big softie.

Which is why it felt a bit bad...

"The interesting things keep happening." Mini thought, her eyes on the house far away from her, but she saw everything, heard everything, and understood all she could. ’Father, what is it that you intend to do with them?’ She wondered, before choosing to forget about it.

"Chief, the fourth one has been planted, three to go... but we lack materials. "

"This city is too barren, the natives barely had any qualifications. Those that met had already been harvested."

"... how long can we stay like this? Before the sapling wilts?"

"The current first one is to wilt within the next two months, and the others soon after it, we have to find new materials fast or return to square one like before."

"It’s been three cities and three subsequent failures, we can’t delay it any longer..." Mini felt the situation was not good on her end. So after a bit of thought, she said. "The town feels lacking because the talented ones chose to leave this place to find better chances outside, as long as we can call them back, we will have enough."

"But such callouts will put those on alert, they might not even pick up the bait."

"Doesn’t matter, the losses in materials and unpredictability had already left us with no choice, not to mention, I have a feeling that we might succeed if we play our cards right."
