Chapter 713: 11.03.5 Have you seen yourself.
Although a bit disappointing to learn he won’t be getting any direct support from his superiors, it was expected to a certain level. This is why Darde’s first instinct was to take matters into his own hands, which did appear to be the correct choice in hindsight.
Even if he made a contract with the shady cult of sorts, it’s far better than leaving his family’s life in danger. It’s worth it to him, as long as they remain safe everything will be worth it in his eyes.
So he left, the new clothes lacked the rotten smell of his clothes from before, and the fragrance of the soap would kill any smell of medicine left on his body. Which is enough to fool those that did concern him, which is mostly his wife and daughter.
Scaring them is never the right option. Specifically, his wife might refuse to leave the city once she learns of the danger it all poses to him.
"I am home." He spoke in a small voice, finding a few security guards walking in the area, normal than usual compared to the times he had visited in the colony. Which means, they were sent by the chief to keep them safe.
Although the old man claims to not help him, he still does what he can for someone in his situation.
"Dear, you left me worried." Nerissa his wife sighed with relief, as the childish voice of their daughter came from behind her. A voice giddy to find her father back as she rushed and jumped into his hands. "Sorry, I left you worried." He apologized while focusing all his attention on his daughter for a bit, but in his mind, he did feel the existence of his sister not too far away. But she remained quiet, letting the family make up and deal with their emotions.
"Nuru, did you meet your aunty?" He asked his daughter while setting his shoes aside. Who replied by nodding her head, but that was it. "She didn’t greet her properly did she?"
"You know how she is, too shy against strangers."
"Nuru, that is wrong, she is my older sister, she is family, why be shy towards her?"
It was normal, Darde acted as normal as he could muster while he walked in. There was not much to speak of, he greeted his sister who was in the living room, and then sat on the chair, although his body screamed at him to rest.
But he needed to make a few things clear. "Sister, those predetermined actions from before, unless you have set up an eye on me, that can’t simply be a coincidence is it?" Darde was aware of the sealing of his sister’s abilities. It would be safe to say that he barely remembers if his sister even had the talent for foresight or not because of how early in his life it happened.
However, it doesn’t mean he considered those memories of his wrong, he believed in his family and its lineage, every one of their family was born mystic, and his daughter, although young is pretty much the same as well.
Such coincidences don’t happen often. Which added more validity to the facts he had been taught since childhood.
And if taking it altogether, one thing was certain even without asking about it. "I die?" He continued after a pause.
He didn’t ask whether his sister could see the future again or not, he already determined that she did, and taking that into account, he acted the rest of the way.
"The future is uncertain, malleable as long as you know how." She replied, neither denying nor accepting the words her brother spoke. Gone was the innocent and foolish boy she remembers. The sharp demeanor and wits he showed at this moment spoke enough about his capabilities and experience.
Lying in front of such a sharp individual won’t amount to anything, not to mention from the psychic strength alone, her brother somewhat rivaled her, which was absurd considering she was a decade older than him, and hence had experience and grown a lot more.
"Stop with the serious topics, there Nuru is still awake." Came Nerissa, her voice deep. She had heard what her husband had said, and although it did make her heart tremble a bit, she held it in.
"I apologize if I was too forceful, sister." Darde apologized for a bit, feeling sleepy by the second, but this was still morning, and due to the situation they found themselves in, his daughter didn’t go to school. Meaning she was pretty active at the moment.
So the topic shifted to simple greetings and discussions about the past, which Nerissa did show some interest in. However, her mind was reminded of what her husband and sister-in-law spoke about: the danger to his life and to the life of the whole family.
She can’t afford that, she can’t let harm come to them no matter what. In her own way, she was making up her own mind on what to do, away from the plans of her husband. Because, whether Darde wanted to accept it or not, his wife knew him better than anyone. ’The fool will use himself as bait.’ The danger to their lives was apparent, more so when the tone of her husband from before dictated that whatever the reason their life was in danger, it wasn’t over yet.
Still, even with all that chaos in her mind, she still did her part, joining in the conversation from time to time.
It looked like a fake conversation, as the brother and sister never got too deep into most topics. They usually talked about their daily lives and not the rest. Nuru, Darde’s daughter, listened to it all with bright eyes and slowly got close to her aunt, seeing her acting so casually with her father.
And so went the day, Darde took out some time and went to bed without needing any excuse, mostly an act to not worry his family, while the duo of two women and the daughter went their own ways, playing simple games as they talked about the life they lived.
If there was a change between their conversation from before and now, it would be that they were a lot more open.
This is how the day ended, and before long deep of night when his daughter won’t wake up no matter what, Darde got up and visited the living room. Though he could see his wife was well awake and did give him a look. "Don’t worry, it’s not as serious as you think." He spoke, turning toward the living room, where his sister had already sat and waiting for the arrival of her brother.
"Where were we?" He asked. Looking deeply at his sister. Who instead of answering him directly, asked. "You never once asked me, where was I, what was I doing? The life I lived... we didn’t use to be so cold."
"Don’t blame me for this sister, you left me alone. Leaving me on my own, do you know how it felt? Not knowing why you left... " As Darde continued, he looked at his sister’s face, guilt written over her face.
It would be like to say he didn’t know why she left him. "Let’s not talk about personal matters, what happened in the past happened, let’s focus on the present." He spoke, appearing to accept the past for what it was.
"Did I die?"
Although the nonchalant behavior of her brother did hurt her more than it would if he was angry with her. But she still chose to agree with him on that part. "Yes, you did die, along with your wife," she spoke, her voice low and not talking around the matter. "But with me here, changing that future is easy." She claimed, believing in her ability completely. With the future in her favor, it would be easy to plan ahead even if this ability is pretty unpredictable.
But Darde didn’t believe this. "It’s not easy, we both know the price... simple precognition into the future to deal with those hooligans from before already took a toll on your body, as for changing the fate? I don’t think you can handle it, sister." These were cold hard truths, messing with the fate of this world has its price. The more you abuse it the bigger the backlash.
And after a certain level, the backlash reaches such a level that it’s entering absurdist territory. "You wish to end up like him?" Darde asked, his words obvious on who he was speaking about.
