Chapter 701: 11.01.6 A new one?

"Deeming him to be a mere scholar is too much, that man was a monster in the truest sense." The memory, the pain he endured, and the horror of each part of your soul shattering in front of what Chalice can consider a lower being.

It was an absurd feeling, the fear he felt at that moment was unlike anything. For the angels of Bright Lineage, were born to battle their kind. The angels of those that can Rival the Sun God in destructive strength was not someone he can mess with. So defeated by her was not much of a stain on his name.

And such defeats are also understandable.

But not the one at the hands of the Scholar. "Coward, if I was in your place, I would have hunted him to the ends of the earth... sadly, I can’t walk out of Rudrain." The one named Lakshya ruminated over his state, stuck to a pillar connected to the very heart of the city. He was the ultimate protector and someone who had merged his domain with the city. Hence, his name is Lakshya the goal to strive for.

However, the reality of this being and his nature was far from noble.

"It’s why you were sealed here by our Lord. You lack thought, my friend, you lack the very basic emotion that helps in survival."

Fear was the core aspect that every living being should have. It’s what ensures one’s survival, fear makes one be more thoughtful of their actions, and fear is the thing that makes one back off in the face of a battle that can’t be won.

And this is why Chalice was always allowed to go out. No matter the atrocities and bloodbath he caused on the outside, he knows his limits, he knows the nature of his enemies which is why he was always able to save his skin, even in front of an enemy that far exceeds his caliber.

"That again... death is not that important. We live and die and are reborn again... it’s never-ending. Why should I fear it?" The man stuck to the pillar spoke, his voice cold, causing a bit of goosebumps on Chalice.

Lakshya, unlike him, who was a Blood mage during his mortal days long ago, was born after the birth of Knights, but he was not what one can call a Knight. He was something far more absurd.

’A curse Lord.’ The path of Curses was already dead, and even if it wasn’t, Curse Wielders could only ever reach the peak of Master rank, not because that was the limit, as is the case with Exorcist.

But it’s just that most Curse Wielders die before entering the ranks of Grandmaster, due to the payment they had to endure for such inorganic power.

Their survival rate is always so minuscule that it’s considered a miracle for a Grandmaster Rank Curse Wielder to appear and live for long.

And for a Lord to appear, the term relegated to the Legendary of their kind is even more absurd.

But Lakshya did it, he was a bizarre outlier filled with madness and a cheat that no one would have expected. ’Curse of memory.’ No one knows when he acquired it and in what life, but Lakshya carried with him a powerful curse that let him retain memories after death, each reincarnation, no matter the being he becomes, his memory will never disappear.

He is the ultimate library in the eyes of the mages, and that’s how Chalice originally found him. A Curse Meister bound to a tower, acting as a library of sorts for all kinds of magic spells. Though the moment Chalice had tried to force his mouth open to extract the magical knowledge of the now destroyed tower, he had died.

Probably a failsafe by the mages to protect their knowledge. But who was Chalice? He was already a servant of the Wine God at that time, and it was easy for him to save the disintegrating soul of Lakshya. But that was the thing, there was no need to protect it, for the library of a being did not only remain unharmed, but he entered the river of reincarnation just like any other.

But that was not the first or last meeting with Lakshya, as one can already see.

"You are being envious again," Lakshya spoke with a smile, and Chalice couldn’t help but feel a hint of disgust again. "I have got what I came here for, you can go back to sleep." With the use of a token, the pillar lit up again. And under the mocking gaze that slowly closed down in sleep, Chalice left the room.

’That creep.’ That monster, able to retain memory through death might appear good, but it also means that you will slowly be overloaded with memories, useful and useless alike. Making one go mad and uncaring towards life.

’Monster.’ It was impossible for a soul to survive in such a state, for the curse never granted him any form of immortality, it just granted him a way to keep his memories. But through the sheer will to see the next day, this bastard kept surviving monstrous complications that could have shattered the soul of virtually everyone in his place.

’The lord... why even use something so dangerous.’ Chalice knew the answer, but he couldn’t accept it no matter what. ’Hah, and now they focus on him.’ Although in his eyes Farhad was not as important of a pawn due to his lack of strength, the orders from above can’t be ignored, more so when it was backed by the voices of those accursed Prophets.

’He can’t die, he can’t be touched, but he can join us.’ Those were the directives he received, but more than that, the order he directly received from the Son of his Lord, a progenitor was far simpler. ’I wish to learn the curse he carries.’

Which is what led to the manipulation of events that forced Farhad back into Rudrain. However, there was more to it than meets the eye.

The Corpse Lord, or Ghoul King, whatever one wants to call it. It was deemed one of the most dangerous curses to exist in this world. For it is a curse that is born with its own will. A curse that doesn’t need a carrier or victims to spread, can create disaster on its own.

’The ghoul wave starts to make sense.’ Sometimes, things just happen to make sense after some thought. The chaos and the disaster that the country had suffered before his awakening had been noted by Chalice.

And when some facts were added, a clear picture formed in his head. ’An anomaly really can’t be underestimated.’

It’s absurd that Jester dared to create something like Farhad and succeeded on the first try. ’Perverts everywhere.’ Chalice wanted to drain this Jester of all his blood, that is, if he had a body to begin with.

’For now, focus on the boy... his danger far exceeded what I had thought.’ If a Corpse Lord were to enter the ranks of Legend, one can’t even understand the horror, but this horror even had an entirely opposite force of Samadhi flames in him. So whatever monstrosity that will be born out of him, will far exceed Chalice’s Expectation, which was already high through the roof.

’I wish to seal him...’ Chalice sighed, before shaking his head.

Although ignorant of the reason, he understands things can’t be simple if the Prophets were the ones to warn us all about this.

******

Of course, those were not all the things the prophets had warned about.

"The Cynarkians had moved on him, worrisome, warning them could be problematic."

"It’s expected. It was either that, or them letting him be fed to the Radiants."

The same old room with the same old people with their faces hidden in their cloaks, leaving only white irises, a sign of blindness.

"I say, focus on Azad for now, they are ignoring our warnings, ignoring our will. Letting the religion of that anomaly spread further and further... we can’t allow that."

"They have long lost touch with us, driven by ego and arrogance, they look down on us. Let them suffer."

"Their suffrage will bring forth growth for the anomaly, ignoring the matter is not good on our end."

"Troublesome people everywhere. When will it all end."

"When the new one takes a seat, before that, things will keep getting worse."

"It’s still too far from that. Most of us would be dead by then... there hasn’t been a new one born among our kind in the last thousand years. Who will replace us once we are gone?"

"It’s just that we haven’t found them yet... once we do, we will take them in, someone young to carry our will to the new world."
