Chapter 67: 2.18.2 The sewer.
All of it was an illusion, a way to give false hope to his victims.
Dodging the bullets and then kicking high in the air to deflect the sword that was aimed at his head, Pansar flew over and stuck to the ceiling, looking at the two below with eyes irrevocably filled with derision.
Being a Knight himself, without a hint of dark magic or curses in his body, Pansar never faced the similar suppression that Kairut did. But the need to stray away from Remira while also not making her suspicious of her immunity was hard.
’A little limit should be fine.’ Using the ceiling, he launched his body in the direction of Aafik, who was still reeling from Pansar’s kick.
But before he can be hit, Remira comes in between to protect him, which is just what Pansar wanted.
Dividing multiple times in the air , creating clones that all attacked at Remira. And Like he expected, Remira couldn’t react in time to his attacks.
She blew apart the ones that were directly in front of her, but the ones that came from the side, launched their attack on her. Among which only a single attack was the correct one.
But this time, it was Aafik’s turn to save Remira, deflecting the throne sword with a swipe from his sword, he moved and stood next to Remira back to back, covering their blindspots.
Which the real Pansar, who hid on the ceiling, found fascinating.
Didn’t this man just curse Remira for his brother’s death?
Then why is he able to fight alongside her so fine, without even following dialog?
’I would have wanted to learn more, but this is it."
The nature of the Radiant blood is that the more there are, the stronger it would grow. And even if the compatibility between the two Knights is not as great as Aafik had with his brother, it didn’t mean this simple growth can be ignored.
"This is getting boring." With those words, Pansar dropped a single grenade on the floor and dodged away from the shots that were fired by Remira soon after.
Making each shot miss. But this simple miss gave the two Knights enough time to dodge away from the grenade location, which never did explode.
All it did was to start to smoke.
Which confused Remira for a while. But as she smelled the smoke, her eyes widened.
"It’s the same poison." Aafik said on the side, who had more wounds on his body and hence more exposure to the poison.
Pansar just smiled from the dark, looking at the weakened demeanor of Aafik and Remira, who kept her blood active, burning away the smoke that came close to her nose.
Something which was too taxing for Aafik to do.
As for using normal grenades to completely eliminate the two here?
No, it would be too foolish and the sewer line in this area might collapse in response to the explosion, which might attract more parties and hence exposing the weirdness of the sewer which has been hidden for the last few decades.
"We have to move from here." Remira suggested, as the smoke was spreading to the wider area, making it harder to look for a safe spot in the sewers.
And Aafik, who gave one last look at his dead brother, just nodded and started to follow Remira, white keeping an eye for the attack.
However, their escape was not easy, as Pansar kept attacking them from the dark with his clones, causing the injuries to accumulate on the bodies of the two. Before they reached a section bigger in size with a giant sewage pool in the middle.
A place big enough for the smoke to slowly diffuse in a wider area, causing the concentration of poison in the air to drop down by a lot.
Though the smell only got worse, a lot worse than before.
’Methane.’ Remira thought and looked toward Aafik, who seemed too focused on the enemy’s next attack.
The state of his body was not as good as before, poison had seeped into his bloodstream and Remira didn’t know how long Aafik could hold on.
It was then that Remira felt something below her, she can see the left hand of Aafik that had been bleeding, silently put something in her sheath.
Which confused her for a bit.
But knowing that the situation was not good, she didn’t question it. The focus was on how to eliminate the enemy.
’A total of seven exits.’ This seemed to be the central substation of the sewer; from here, the six lanes of the sewer would converge into a larger seventh stream which would move out of the city.
Usually, the vents in the sewer would slowly diffuse the gas accumulation of this level and even if it didn’t, the municipality also had the job of weekly checking up on the sewers to make sure that it never happens.
But for some reason, Remira can see no signs of human activity in the underground for a while. There was no maintenance done, causing the vents to clog up.
On the other hand, Aafik slowly walked off from Remira’s side, showing his unguarded gait, while he murmured. "Brother... I am coming."
Much to Remira’s surprise, who tried to stop Aafik, but she was stopped in her place by a single clone that suddenly materialized in her way.
"Its the end of your friend." The clone said, giving a look at Aafik, next to whom the real body of Pansar materialized and then gently stopped Aafik in his tracks. "Stop! Don’t kill him." Remira shouted but Pansar ignored her plea and just said.
"There is no need for me to kill him, like I did his brother." At those words, Remira’s eyes widened up. She didn’t know the man that died before was Aafik’s brother. No, more than that, she didn’t even know the name of this knight that just fought alongside her.
She knew nothing about him, but he had done his best to support her.
"As for his current state." Pansar said, while using his fingers to stretch Aafik’s eyelids open. "Lack of oxygen to the brain, the poison weakened him and the methane made it harder to breathe, causing him to hallucinate."
"Which means, you just led this man to his death." Pansar pointed out with a sadistic laugh, while Remira tried to close in on Aafik, but kept being stopped by multiple clones that kept materializing between the two of them.
"Why the hurry? This man just lost his brother Little knight." Pansar spoke, looking at the struggling Remira with a condescending tone. "Living should be painful for him... so why should I not help him forget it all?"
Pansar then took out his blade, on which some dried blade still remained. "Let the blood of the two brother’s mix together."
He said proudly, slowly slitting Aafik’s throat, while Remira could only glare at Pansar in anger. "I will murder you." The emotions she suppressed till now exploded all at once.
Making the radiation from her body increase in density, which surprised Pansar. But before he could react, he suddenly found that the blood which flowed out of Aafik’s neck was a bit warm.
No, more than warm, it seemed to be bubbling.
Which Remira noticed too.
"??"
The aura around her diffused, as her eyes concentrated on Aafik’s lips, which seemed to be moving and making the words.
’R...u...n!’
Then she bolted towards one of the exits. As for Aafik, no one knew where he suddenly gained such a strength, but he held Pansar’s hand with all the strength he had, while the heat in his body started to climb up.
"You.. you bastard!!" Pansar knew that Aafik was planning, which made him even more panicked. He punched, breaking the eye of Aafik, but Aafik’s grip didn’t lose up.
Then he punched again, caving in the skull of Aafik, but as if possessed by some ghost, his grip still didn’t give in.
So Pansar took out his knife and slashed at Aafik’s arms, intending to cut them.
But before his knife could reach his arms. The blood that had spread from his neck, his broken skull and the slashes that were all over his body.
All of them lit up with a white fire.
A fire ignited the methane pocket in the air, causing a giant explosion that destroyed all the clones that were pursuing Remira, who was in turn pushed into the 4th line.
An explosion that shook the whole underground sewer network and collapsed an influential part of the city aboveground, causing countless loss of life.
As for Remira?
She survived on the occasion that she had deployed the flame shield over her body, which took the massive brunt of the explosion, along with the projectiles that were hurled all around the place, saving her life.
Though, not all of her was saved.
"Fuck!" She cursed, trying to get up from the ground, but her stubby left arm, which lacked a palm, made it harder to set her body straight. So she sat straight, next to the wall, looking toward the collapsed rubbled that closed divided the two sides.
While her right hand lit up with white fire, which she used to cauterize her splintered left arm, causing her to moan in pain. "I should have stuck with those operatives." Remira thought with some regrets, while getting up from her spot, intending to leave this place.
But she stopped, unlike others, she didn’t need to use a torch to look at the dark. And her eyes of flame were a lot stronger than her own contemporaries. Making it easier for her to notice something odd with rubble.
Something odd and familiar.
