Chapter 619: 9.15.2 The Dwarves have come.
Ignorance is bliss, that’s what the sages have said often. But the thing is, being ignorant doesn’t protect you from the consequences of your actions.
And Rosso’s crime in this particular aspect was his arrogance. There was one weakness that Rosso had never considered himself. An element that Rosso with his limited but busy life barely had time to wonder about.
Which was Arrogance.
"My greatest creation." Were the words of his creator, that had emboldened his actions till now. He might be weaker than others in certain areas, but his capabilities always exceeded his opponents due to the trove of knowledge in his head and the cheat-like ability of Isolation.
Even the cursed blood that flowed in his body was not something simple.
That altogether combined made him a fool. A fool that was blinded by his own arrogance.
And it was this arrogance of his that became Rosso’s downfall.
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is that you will be stuck here forever, with no way out." Farhad calmly placed the totem back into his flesh showing some pity to Rosso. "Which is why I was stopping your foolish actions. You broke the rules too much, you couldn’t leave this place, if at all. But me, I still have a chance and I didn’t wish to get it ruined due to your foolishness." Though Farhad did feel pity for this man who stood in front of him, that was all.
That was the fruit of this man’s Karma, and he had attacked Farhad out of ignorance not too long ago, an attack that came close to killing someone as important as Sir Catto. If not for being Jester’s creation, Farhad wouldn’t even afford Rosso even a little bit of pity on his end.
"Now that you know, I hope you didn’t damage this place too much, I still wish to walk a normal path." With those words, Farhad stepped forward. Though it was at this point, not too far from him, a path opened up and a bunch of giants walked out followed by a dwarf.
"Hmm?" And Farhad gave a deep look at these people, even recalling similar giants, outside not too long ago. Even then, the ones sitting inside appeared far more fragile than the ones outside. Their vitality was flickering, showing that their life was close to ending.
’A death squad.’ It was not odd that the old were sent for dangerous missions in certain clans in the olden days. Even then those old people would not be so old that they were incapable of action. But of these, it would seem the majority of them barely had a year left. If not for the armor that they wore, they might not even be able to move.
"A foreigner or a native?" Arbood wondered, while Gael who stood on his side came forward and smelling the blood around both Rosso and Farhad, asked. "Did you do this?" Since coming to this new space, the scene that appeared in front of Gael left him speechless.
There were corpses left and right, from those of the old to the young, all of whom had their heads exploded into flowers. Such a bizarre scene made Gael’s eyes hurt. He even felt a level of mental contamination. ’What are these two things.’
Yes, in Gael’s eyes, they were things and nothing more.
Being from the Bastard Bears, his animalistic senses far exceeded the norm, even Salvarez at his peak won’t be comparable to Gael in this aspect as unlike Salvarez who suppressed his animalistic desire to take control over his psyche, Gael was an animal through and through, there was no difference between the beast that lived inside of him and his true nature.
Making it so, his senses were far more acute than anyone else in his tribe.
’Both are monsters, even if only one looks like it.’ These were the reason that Gael didn’t direction treat Rosso as a the victim, even if he appeared to be in the most derelict state. Because in his eyes, both were far from normal.
And well, he was right.
"I did it..." Spoke the one that looked most human, standing up and glaring at the dwarf with the same intensity. "But... I see now that it was a mistake." With those words, Rosso put his hands up.
Which confused Gael a bit, while Arbood, who was on the side spoke again. "I wonder what your goal of being here is?" There is no need for conflict, not a direct one at least. Because, unlike their group, which only had two Grandmasters, with one of them putting their foot into the grave. The two on the front gave a different level of energy altogether.
Even the sensors on their armor were screaming to not fight with these two. Arbood could ignore, it if not for his desire to retain the lives of those around him because he knows that once the Grandmaster fights, these old men beside him won’t survive the aftermath.
"Our goal?... "Rosso spoke again, appearing calmer than before. ’I would be stuck here.’ were the thoughts that kept revolving around him. Not too long ago he was dreaming of a better life, a life that comes after his Creator is successfully rescued. But now?
Would that dream ever come true?
’I... was ready to die at the start of it, weren’t I?’ The old Rosso, his life had been short. So is his growth, which exceeded any expectations, though strength is never the only margin one should consider for growth. ’I was looking forward to it.’ The old Rosso would probably find the current one pathetic and weak.
Imagine having second thoughts as well as regrets while he was so close to saving his creator.
Why should his life even matter? As long as he can sacrifice it for his Creator, the old Rosso would be happy.
"Ask him if he still likes peanuts." Spoke to his creator in the form of a rat. A creator he had done so much for, but in that creator’s eyes, the only thing that existed was his old friend. ’Isn’t these thoughts proof of flaw?’ There was jealousy in Rosso’s heart, there was regret.
He hated himself for having these odd thoughts. Wouldn’t this be proof that he was not perfect? And the one that is perfect is the guy that stands in front of him?
"We... we are here too," Rosso spoke in a tired voice, his voice lacking any energy at this point. While Rosso who in his monstrous form stopped Rosso with. "There is no need to answer this." Then he turned to the Dwarves.
"Violence is not necessary. Whatever our goals are, we should focus on that, and if we succeed then good, and if we don’t, then no worries. The best one wins and the rest go home safe... there is no need to look for reasons to fight at this point." Farhad took back his mutations and returned to a human form with clothes he made up of his fleshy wings. Making him appear as a bizarre enigma at this point.
While Arbood also turned silent.
’We are not at the forefront.’ This was the seventy-second world, the one that would contain an oddity that would prove that they were on the right path.
And considering how they met with these two at this time, it can be considered this is the oddity itself. ’Path converges.’ He thought looking towards Rosso and Farhad. ’How can they be faster than I?’ They wondered. Ignorant of the hidden paths and the cheated existence of the cat.
"We should just kill them... these two, they are too dangerous," Gael spoke, his nose flaring up and his body ready to pounce on his enemies. But Arbood, he didn’t think like that.
Although the scene in front of him did leave him speechless, it was even more proof that fighting these two can be dangerous, far more than Gael with his animal mind can expect.
"No, there is no need, focus on the task at hand."
"But grandfather, is it ok? They seem dangerous."
"That’s why we are backing off, there is no need to lower our numbers for a needless war. Our goal is not to deal with outsiders here, it’s to rescue that scholar." These were conversations that were held on the private comms and only the dwarves in the armor were aware of it. So Farhad or anyone else wasn’t able to hear anything about this goal.
"Name yourself warrior, at least let us know who it was that dared to come to our lands?" Arbood asked in a friendly tone, proving that he had chosen to accept Farhad’s offer. Much to Gael’s apprehension, he remained quiet, he was just there to protect that young boy and bring him out once something went wrong, nothing more.
So he chose to remain quiet for the moment.
"I... I am Farhad Maisel, as for this man... I don’t know. What I do know, is that he is not an enemy anymore."
"Any more?" Arbood asked, before turning to look at the carnage around him and then at Rosso again. ’Was he the one to do it?’
From Farhad’s words, it can be seen that Rosso was not so friendly before and might even have fought Farhad not too long ago, but in the end, was subdued by him. ’So he is strong.’
And then, as if something clicked in Arbood’s head, he paused and asked. "Are you Varkus Maisel’s son?"
