Chapter 60: 2.17 Getting owned.

To Blue Lotus, no matter how much they hated Varkus Maisel or Marshall Maisel. He was important to them.

The amount of Blue Lotus member’s killed by Varkus’s hand were enormous. But all of it was done for a specific purpose.

All of it was done to attract his attention for the day he would be needed.

And that day was soon going to come, and through some series of terrorist attacks on the masses of the city, they intended to attract the Marshall that had earned his name as the killer of Blue Lotus cult members.

But before they could carry on with their plan, the rat king had suggested to them the alternative.

"Kill his kid... I will kill him, so you shouldn’t worry and eat some popcorn while waiting for the good news."

Was the Rat King’s suggestion, which he made in a playful way, appearing completely uncaring towards their own opinion.

They wanted to say that Maisel doesn’t care for his offspring, he treats them as set pieces to be discarded when their function ceases to exist.

And even if his child’s death did attract his attention, he still won’t stay in the city for longer. No, it was next to impossible for him to do so.

They already had proof of it, as Maisel’s daughter lost her leg in a serious bombing accident, which the Marshall didn’t even register.

But now the Rat King was claiming that killing the child would work and he would do it himself.

"I knew something was wrong." At that time, Vanessa had lost most of her authority in the Durum branch of Blue Lotus by Adam. And it was he who chose to agree with Rat King’s request with letting him do as he pleased, as long as the Marshall moved as they intended.

And with the death of Farhad, it actually happened . Marshall came here with vengeance, roaming the streets looking for the signs of any suspicious activity, while hunting for the killer of his son.

As for the way he died and the fact that before his death, he was close to the bastards of Radiance society. She understood that something was wrong.

’He played us.’

"If he cared for that kid.. Why would he kill him?" Vanessa wondered about this detail too. Death was irreversible. The only thing left for the death was corruption of soul if they stayed on this land for a longer time, or getting claimed by the fog of death and being sent for reincarnation.

""I don’t know about that. I just told you what I was able to find through his actions as well as his orders."

"This information, its not as valuable as the gift we gave you."

"Calling it a gift is a bit much Miss Vanessa, this here was a transaction. And I kept my end of the bargain."

Kairut sighed, while silently opening the book that Vanessa gave him and reading a bit of paragraphs.

"??"

It was then that he found something odd with it.

"You..." Kairut was going to curse at Vanessa at this point. But he held it in. "It would seem that the information I provided you was a lot more detailed than what you just gave me."

The book detailing the Ink Permanence was incomplete as Vanessa had previously promised.

Though not the kind Kairut had expected.

Instead of giving Kairut the first half of the book, Vanessa had actually given him the whole book, albeit with a simple change.

"Sir Kairut, there is no need to be angry. This is a transaction, just like you said." Vanessa spoke, abandoning her thoughts over the Rat King’s plan, she continued. "And there are more transactions to be had and we can fill in the remaining words through it."

Yes, as she said. The book was complete. But around half of the words were not even there from the sentences, while the majority of diagrams were partially drawn. Erasing the easily identifiable parts so that it becomes impossible for Kairut to recover any diagrams on his own.

"Truth be told Miss Vanessa, this little game of yours tells me enough of your sincerity." Kairut maintained his poker face, but the tone in his voice has turned colder.

So he stood up from his seat with the intention to leave.

Though, Vanessa on the side also made a helpless expression. "We are sincere Sir Kairut, as long as you wish for it, we can fill in the blanks of that book, in return for your services."

Vanessa really sounded genuine, but Kairut had no intention to stay here any longer. After this meeting was over. He soon left the scene. Leaving Vanessa alone in the room.

"Should we follow him?" Pansar, who materialized from the shadows behind Vanessa asked, while looking towards the gate through which Kairut had just left.

"No need, he is too cautious for that to happen. Following him would only cost us."

Vanessa said with a smile on her face.

In truth, since the start. She didn’t want Kairut anywhere closer to her operation. He was too dangerous on his own with the strength he wielded.

Mind you, there was only a single Archmage level figure in the Durum branch of Blue Lotus. And Adam, who had recovered some of his old memories also doesn’t come close to becoming an archmage. It was only his old identity that propped him to his position.

Meaning, even if she held less authority than Adam. She still can’t be ignored due to the strength she possesses.

But what if another party enters the fray. Someone of her level, but deeper experience and stronger power?

No, her position would be in danger.

Not to mention, this outside entity also doesn’t hold reverence for Blue Lotus in his heart. He is only here out of greed, while also being a slave to one of their enemies.

It was for all these reasons why she played such an offensive card on Kairut.

A card strong enough to sour his mood, making him keep his distance from them. While also weak enough so that he doesn’t get antagonized by them and become enemies.

"But instead of following him, go look up for the corpse of that kid..." Vanessa thought for a while, before light lit up in her head. "That kid named Farhad."

With her order given, the branch where she held a meeting with Kairut was purged of any trace in case someone would approach them.

*****

Kairut knew he had been had.

He was playing and he felt some anger about it.

The thought to burn down the very cause of his anger, also appeared in his mind.

But then, his reasoning held him back from making any moves that he might regret.

"There is still a chance.’ He thought.

Originally, when he went for a meeting, he never expected to obtain any kind of rewards so early. No, it was more likely to be attacked by the Blue Lotus, in an attempt to shut him up.

But they never did that, they just let him leave on his own violation.

Which became one of the reasons why he was struggling with making his choice.

As for the real reason why he felt anger, even while getting something at elast.

It was simple.

Kairut felt like a child who was promised a new toy by his parents during holidays. And afte much wait, he was given the very thing his parents promised.

But the moment he opened the toy box, he found that the toy was only filled with holes. It still appeared as a normal toy, but it couldn’t never function as one and was so fragile that it would break.

While his parents promised to provide him the pieces to fill in the holes if he acted good.

It was such a feeling that made him angry.

It would have been joyful if he got half the toy. But this was just insulting to him.

’Hmm, but from the looks of it. They would have never given me anything to begin with.’

’They can’t trust me.’

The keyword here was ’Can’t’ and he also understood why it was the case.

Vanessa made up her mind the moment she heard that he was under contract with the Jester.

Something he knew would impede him in his plan and he was right.

But this meeting was not a complete loss. Kairut gas builds up a connection with the Blue Lotus and it won’t take long before he earns the complete book.

It was why Kairut looked forward to it.

Walking out of the exit of the sewer, Kairut left the house which hid the entrance and walked back to the real world.

It was morning at this time and the streets were slowly filling up with early birds, some of which were there for jobs.

And among those with jobs, a certain group of men stepped forward and slowly surrounded Kairut.

While two others broke off from the group and headed towards the house from where Kairut exited not too long ago.

"Kairut Lucien? We would like you to come with us."
